Palera1n team shows off jailbroken iPadOS 17 installation on checkm8 device

Just a couple of days ago after WWDC 2023 kicked off, the palera1n team confirmed that it would support iPadOS 17 on the small subset of iPads that were both susceptible to the checkm8 bootrom exploit and capable of running iPadOS 17.

The palera1n team takes to Twitter to tease palera1n running on an iPadOS 17 device.

Since then, it seems the palera1n team has made progress on adding support after going hands-on with the developer beta of iPadOS 17. The exciting announcement was made via Twitter late last night, just one day after iPadOS 17 was made available as a developer beta.

In the Tweet, the palera1n team shows the version number of iPadOS being 17.0, along with the Sileo package manager app running in the background.

Before this, palera1n team member Tom (also known as @ploosh_ptr) showed off screenshots of the palera1n app on an iPadOS 17 device, expressing their interest in being the first person to own iPadOS 17:

While the iPhone X and older iPhone handsets won’t be capable of running iOS 17, the list of supported checkm8-vulnerable iPads include the following:

  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • 5-inch iPad Pro
  • 9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation)

It’s also worth noting that the palera1n team intends to add Apple TV support in a future update, however the roadmap for when this might happen remains in the distant future as iPadOS 17 seems to be the latest priority at this time.

Currently, the public release of the palera1n jailbreak doesn’t support iPadOS 17, so we’ll need to wait for an official update to palera1n to take advantage of this new support. It’s unknown if the team plans to launch support for iPadOS 17.0 beta during the beta period or if they will wait until the public release this Fall. Only time, or an official announcement, will tell.
