Apple releases watchOS 8.1.1 with patch for Apple Watch Series 7 charging issue

Hot on the heels of Apple releasing iOS 15.1.1 to the public earlier this week, which patched a relatively smaller issue, Apple is back with another update. But this one’s for the Apple Watch. Specifically, for the Apple Watch Series 7, which has apparently run into some charging issues for some owners out in the wild.

On Thursday, Apple released watchOS 8.1.1 to the public. It’s a minor update in the grand scheme of things, and, as such, it isn’t adding any major forward facing features. However, it does patch an issue related to charging for the Apple Watch Series 7.

Apple’s release notes say that some Apple Watch Series 7 owners have run into issues where the smartwatch won’t charge as expected. This software update, which is free, should help fix that problem.

watchOS 8.1.1 can be downloaded and installed via the official Watch app available on the iPhone. Simply open the app, then select General –> Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process. If you have Automatic Updates switched on, then the smartwatch will handle the installation process the next time the device is charging.

To update your smartwatch, then you need to make sure it has at least 50% battery life, that it’s paired and within range of your iPhone, and that it’s connected to the charger.

watchOS 8.1.1 is available now.
