AirPods 3 features a water-resistant charging case

In October of 2021, Apple officially unveiled the third-generation AirPods. Not quite as “pro” as the AirPods Pro, the new headphones still boast some noteworthy features that make them worth the purchase price. And, indeed, there are even some elements of the newest truly wireless headphones that stand out compared to Apple’s pro in-ear headphones.

For example, the new third-generation AirPods feature a new “skin-detect sensor.” This specific feature is meant to give the AirPods a better grasp of whether or not they are settled into an ear or, say, in your pants pocket. This will probably be a welcomed change for anyone who puts one AirPod in a pocket but doesn’t want their media to automatically stop playing, for instance.

However, the third-generation AirPods also feature another standout feature compared to the AirPods Pro — another feature that will probably come to the second-generation AirPods Pro whenever Apple gets around to finally announcing them. That’s a water-resistant wireless charging case.

As noted today by MacRumors, Apple’s third-gen AirPods feature not only sweat- and water-resistant earbuds, but also a sweat- and water-resistant charging case. The publication notes that Apple’s new charging case is IPX4 rated, which is the same as Apple’s third-generation AirPods.

This means the new case can handle some light splashing from water and coming into quick contact with a sweaty hand after a workout or something. It’s worth noting here, though, that there are some limitations to that rating. Just like the AirPods themselves, the wireless charging case should not be put up against any strong jets of water or submerged in water.

This is a nice feature addition, even if, hopefully, the wireless charging case will never go near any water. But, for folks who might get caught in a sudden rainstorm, at least now you know your charging case and truly wireless headphones won’t be ruined by a few splashes.
