Chris Miller and Phil Lord’s murder mystery comedy ‘The Afterparty’ debuts January 2022 on Apple TV+

After an initial report that told us Chris Miller and Phil Lord, of The Lego Movie fame, were working on a murder mystery comedy for Apple TV+, things went dark. And that was way back in June of last year. But now, all this time later, we not only know when the new series will arrive on Apple’s streaming service, but we also have the first teaser trailer.

The Oscar-winning duo have been working on The Afterparty for a stretch now. But it’s finally happening — in January of next year. Apple’s official announcement today confirmed the show will be premiering sometime in January of 2022. No exact release date to circle on the calendar just yet, but hopefully that new changes soon enough.

As for the series itself, it stars a cadre of comedy greats. That includes Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), Sam Richardson (Veep, the upcoming Hey, Jack! The Kindness Show), Zoë Chao (Love Life), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Ben Schwartz (Space Force), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag), Dave Franco (The Disaster Artist), and John Early (Search Party). There will be a total of eight episodes in the first season.

This one has an interesting set up. Each of the eight episodes will be a different look at the same night, through a different character’s point of view — and with a unique visual format to match:

The Afterparty is a murder-mystery comedy set at a high school reunion afterparty. Each of the eight episodes will feature a retelling of the same night told through a different character’s perspective, each with its own unique visual format and film genre to match the teller’s personality.

Lord and Miller commented on the upcoming series:

This is one of the most surprising, original and fun projects we’ve ever made. Our goal was to tell a comedic whodunnit story in a new and exciting way. By giving each episode its own unique style of storytelling, we were able to make what feels like eight distinctly different but interconnected films that highlight how everyone’s personal perspective and biases shape how they see the world.

Miller is taking up the showrunner duty for the series, while also co-executive producing alongside Lord through their production studio, Lord Miller.

This certainly looks like it will be a wild ride, especially with that cast and the folks behind the camera. Are you looking forward to checking this one out?
