If you’ve had your eyes glued to jailbreak community developments amid all the talk of untethers recently, then you’re not alone, and we’re especially excited to share that you’re in for some good news.
After demonstrating a working untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 12 Pro Max running iOS 14.5.1 just a little over a week ago, hacker and security researcher Linus Henze now says that he expects to publicly release his work on October 21st.
Henze made the announcement this Tuesday evening via Twitter, making note of the release date and adding that it would be open sourced when it drops:
By open sourcing the untether, Henze will both provide something for the community to learn from and give jailbreak developers an important tool for making existing semi-untethered jailbreaks such as Taurine and perhaps even unc0ver into full-fledged untethered jailbreaks instead.
The difference between a semi-unethered jailbreak and an untethered jailbreak is explained in detail in our in-depth piece, but to summarize, a semi-untethered jailbreak requires the end user to re-run the side-loaded jailbreak app after every reboot to return to a jailbroken state, whereas an untethered jailbreak differs by retaining its jailbroken state even after a full reboot.
Given the differences, it’s blatantly obvious as to why an untethered jailbreak is more convenient.
From what we’ve been able to gather so far, Henze’s untether is ready to work on iOS & iPadOS versions 14.5.1 and below right out of the box, and with another exploit and a bit more work, it’s possible that it could be modified to work on firmware as new as iOS & iPadOS 14.6.
Odyssey Team lead developer CoolStar just yesterday confirmed achieving arbitrary code execution in a stock app following a fresh reboot and then alluded to bringing this untether to existing iOS & iPadOS 13.0-14.3 jailbreaks like Odyssey and Taurine.
We have yet to hear anything from the unc0ver team about whether the unc0ver jailbreak would be adding support for an untether once released, but it would certainly be interesting if this were the case.
