Apple may announce its mixed-reality headset at an in-person event ‘sometime in the next several months’

It has been rumored for quite some time that Apple is working on various virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets/glasses. And now a new rumor says Apple may be waiting to unveil one of those devices for an in-person event.

That’s according to a newsletter sent out by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman recently. The point of the newsletter is actually meant to look at Apple’s future in-person events, especially as it relates to the annual Worldwide Developers Conference. In that, Gurman says that Apple does plan on unveiling a “mixed-reality headset” at some point in the near future.

Gurman believes Apple is waiting to be able to host an in-person event for the unveiling. However, that won’t be at this year’s WWDC, which Apple has already announced and confirmed will be a virtual event in early June. Gurman believes Apple will announce the mixed-reality headset “sometime in the next several months”.

Per the newsletter:

Sometime in the next several months, the company is poised to announce a mixed reality headset, its first major new device since 2015. If possible, Apple won’t want to make such a critical announcement at an online event. It wants employees, the media, its partners and developers in the room.

This may be the headset that previous rumors have speculated will boast a pair of 8K displays, more than a dozen cameras meant to track hand movement, iris tracking, and be quite pricey. It will apparently be meant as a direct competitor to other devices already on the market, including Facebook’s Oculus Rift. However, how Apple will actually position the hardware remains to be seen.

This headset is meant to be Apple’s initial leap into the market (not including ARKit, of course). After that, the company will more than likely launch a more mainstream product, likely AR glasses that may be called Apple Glasses, or Apple Glass.

Are you looking forward to this upcoming mixed-reality headset?
