‘Schmigadoon!’ is a comedy musical series premiering this summer on Apple TV+ starring Cecily Strong

Apple TV+ has been building up to a new musical comedy series for about a year now. Finally, for those interested in that sort of thing, we now know what the show’s going to be called and when it will premiere.

Apple TV+ confirmed today that the upcoming comedy musical series is called Schmigadoon!. Yes, that’s the title. The company says the upcoming series will premiere sometime this summer across the globe on Apple TV+, but doesn’t give an exact date to circle on the calendar just yet.

The show will star Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Keegan-Michael Key (Dolemite is My Name) as the two leads. They are a couple on a backpacking trip meant to revitalize their relationship. However, things don’t go according to plan, and, eventually, they find themselves in a “magical town” where “everyone is living in a studio musical from the 1940s”.

You can see a first look still, with Strong and Key front and center, in the image just above.

Here’s how Apple describes the series:

“Schmigadoon!,” a parody of iconic musicals, stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a couple on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover a magical town in which everyone is living in a studio musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.”

We also know that Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Fred Armisen (Portlandia), Kristen Chenoweth (Wicked), and many others are set to star in the series as well.

Schmigadoon! is co-created by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul, with the latter the showrunner and writer of the original musical in the series.

This one sounds pretty wild, and will certainly mix things up for Apple TV+’s library moving forward. Do you plan on checking it out when it arrives this summer?
