The Japanese Association for the Advancement of Medical Equipment last Friday approved the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4 and 5, along with irregular heart rhythm notifications.
As a result of the approval, the Ochanomizu Department of Cardiology has begun moving forward with its ‌Apple Watch‌ Outpatient program, which will help registered patients use devices to help them record suspected arrhythmia attacks and submit them for further detailed examination.

Back in June, Japanese blog Mac Otakara spotted Apple’s registration as a certified manufacturer in Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency, dated March 25, 2020. The purpose of Apple’s filing and its registry entry couldn’t be confirmed back then.
But now, we know for sure that the Mac maker has successfully managed to obtain official authorization for its ECG app and irregular heart rhythm notifications on the Series 4 and 5 models sold in Japan. Both features are also reportedly coming soon to South Korea.
Available on the Apple Watch Series 4 and up, ECG allows users in select territories to measure the electrical activity of their heart by resting their finger on the Digital Crown. According to the watchOS Feature Availability webpage, the ECG feature is currently available in 40 countries.
