Apple is moving along with another firmware update for the AirPods Pro.
As first reported on Tuesday by MacRumors, Apple has released another firmware update for the high-end truly wireless AirPods Pro in-ear headphones. Apple last updated the headphones to firmware version 2D15 in May of this year. Now, the firmware version is 2D27.
The AirPods Pro will update its firmware automatically when it is connected to an iOS device. If you want to try and force the update you can put the AirPods Pro in the charging case, connect the case to a charging source (wireless or wired), and then pair the AirPods Pro to your iPhone or iPad. That should kickstart the firmware update process.
If you want to see which firmware version number your AirPods Pro are currently running, follow these steps: Connect your AirPods Pro to your iPhone –> Open Settings –> Select General –> Tap About –> Select AirPods –> look at the firmware version next to “Firmware Version”.
As far as what’s new in this firmware update, that remains unknown. It’s likely it will improve the overall quality in some way or another. However, past firmware version updates have caused some audio issues for some owners, so it’s possible this update could address some of those issues, among other changes.
Looking ahead, AirPods Pro are getting some impressive changes later this year. Namely, the inclusion of spatial audio. With this new feature, the expensive in-ear headphones will support a “movie theater experience” in sound quality, with virtual surround sound that also supports a range of Dolby technologies, including Dolby Atmos.
That update won’t arrive until this fall, alongside the public launch of iOS 14.
