iOS 13.4 beta adds ‘CarKey’ feature adds ability to unlock, lock, and start supported vehicles

While iOS 13.4 might not bring a whole host of new features to the table, it does add one new exciting element: CarKey.

As noted by 9to5Mac, the CarKey API will make it possible to use not only the iPhone, but also the Apple Watch, as a car key. With the feature, iOS 13.4 users will be able to use their supported device(s) to not only unlock their supported vehicle, but also start it, and, of course, lock it. This feature will be available in NFC-compatible cars, so availability will be limited to a point.

The feature will work similarly to Express Transit Cards, meaning users won’t have to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID or a passcode as long as they’ve gone through the necessary approval steps in the initial setup. It will also work even when the iPhone and/or Apple Watch run out of battery, too.

To use CarKey, hold iPhone or Apple Watch to reader. It will work automatically, without requiring Face ID. You can change express mode settings in Wallet.

You’ll need to have the auto manufacturer’s official app to get the feature to work as intended, and the pairing process will be handled through the Wallet app.

This sounds like an interesting feature. Is this something you’re looking forward to?
