Apple releases tvOS 13: multi-user support, Control Center, and more

Apple has been working up towards the latest major update to the Apple TV, and now tvOS 13 is finally here.

Apple on Tuesday released the next big software update, tvOS 13, to the public. It’s not as big an update as iOS 13, but it still adds worthwhile new features to the mix. The newest software for supported set-top boxes is now available to download and install.

First and foremost, Apple is bringing multi-user support to the Apple TV with tvOS 13.

Users will be able to quickly log in and out using a new Control Center feature in tVOS that reminds us a bit about the Control Center in iOS. Everyone gets their own settings and preferences. This will work great with Apple’s upcoming services that also support multiple users via the Family Sharing feature.

tvOS 13 also brings Control Center for easy settings changes to the set-top box.

For instance, each tvOS user will get their own Up Next list in the TV app along with personalized recommendations and so forth. tvOS also delivers Apple Music and with multi-user support every user gets their own personalized music experience. The same goes for the upcoming game-subscription service Apple Arcade and the video-streaming service Apple TV+.

Apple Music on tvOS 13 will support showing lyrics for songs you are listening to. These lyrics will be synced with the music, so you’ll be able to see what the artist is saying in real-time, rather than simply reading along with a big block of text.

Content will get automatic full-screen previews for shows and films, and new wallpapers like the sea floor and much more.

Apple TV will now also support wireless Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers, which will help play games from the newly-accessible Apple Arcade.

tvOS 13 is available now as a free upgrade.
