Welcome to the latest edition of our Apps of the Week roundup. This week we have a magical, musical app for kids, a machine learning music player and an app designed to get you off your phone. And as always, we’ve selected two great new games for you to check out.
Jam Toys is a kid-friendly musical playground! Tap, touch, swipe, pluck and shake to play a set of six magical instruments. Choose between the triangle, strings, theremin, disc, drums and a rattle. I know the price looks a bit steep for a seemingly simple app, but there are quite a few early reviews raving about how much both kids and adults enjoy using it.
Here is a neat idea: an app that can recommend music to you based on your current mood and environment. Using computer vision and machine learning, Cyanite Play can analyze a brief video (taken by you) and recommend a track to you based on the clip. I like to think if I’m wearing a grey sweatshirt with sweat around the collar it would play Eye of the Tiger.
Offscreen: Screen Time Tracker
If Apple’s own Screen Time feature doesn’t offer enough analysis for you, check out Offscreen. It takes things to the next level, calculating times that you’ve picked up your phone, the average time for each pick-up, and much more. Features include Focus Mode to help keep you on task, data visualization, Apple HealthKit support, and a well-designed share card .
Put your pronunciation skills to the test with Twisty Tongue, the game that will twist your tongue with twenty-six totally tricky tongue twisters. See popular twisters like “Peter Piper picked a peck…” come to life as original illustrations, and get every word correct to earn stars and collect the card. It’s a fun game and it can even be used as a language learning tool.
Looking for something more…enthralling? Check out Second Galaxy. It’s an open world sci-fi game that combines RPG and SLG elements. Explore a universe of nearly 5,000 galaxies, where you can navigate hundreds of space ships, team up to from alliances, trade freely on a global server and engage in epic intergalactic battles with Commanders from around the world.
