In June, Apple launched a voluntary battery replacement and recall for specific 15-inch MacBook Pro models, with units manufactured between September 2015 and February 2017 caught in the dragnet. And now images share just how important that recall is.
Back in June, Steve Gagne shared a few images to his Facebook page (via PetaPixel) that shows the damage that can be done when a 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro catches on fire. According to Gagne’s post, the 2015 MacBook Pro’s battery exploded, and the ensuing fire caused smoke to fill the house.
Gagne notes that, were it not for a random change of routine, the damage could have been much worse:
Normally I keep my MacBook either on my couch or in a basket with notebooks, journals, etc. Thankfully, I uncharacteristically left it on my coffee table, and I really believe that this prevented my house from burning down. The computer had the screen closed, was unplugged, and in Sleep Mode.
This is actually not the first time that we’ve seen what can happen when a MacBook Pro catches on fire after a battery explosion. But these images do make it abundantly clear all over again how important it is to get the battery removed and replaced if you do own one of the 15-inch MacBook Pro models that have been recalled.
We recently reported that Apple received a total of 26 reports of overheating batteries in the MacBook Pro lineup within the United States.

To confirm which model you have, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu () in the upper-left corner of your screen. If you have “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015),” enter your computer’s serial number on the program page to see if it is eligible for a battery replacement.
