An exciting story yesterday, based on a sketchy Reddit report, alleged Apple could use dynamic keyboard technology from Australian startup Sonder, part of Foxconn’s International Holding’s Incubator program. It would presumably permit the Cupertino company to engineer a keyboard with a tiny e-ink display on each key so that the layout could change depending on the app being used.
British newspaper The Guardian confirmed that discussions between members of Apple’s boss Tim Cook and representatives from Sonder Keyboard indeed took place.
New Zealand has just joined the ranks of Apple Pay enabled countries on Wednesday, following suit after neighbouring Australia finally introduced the service in May through ANZ Banking Group.
The foray was met with great customer praise in May, when ANZ became the first major bank in the region that decided to buck the trend of openly colluding with rival banks in an effort to prevent Apple Pay from hitting the shores. While Kiwis will undoubtedly be eager to embrace the technology, implementation is not likely to gather significant momentum until the same large players barring Apple Pay from the Australian market (most notably Commonwealth Bank, National Australian Bank, Westpac) come to an agreement over the cut Apple makes with every micro transaction and join ANZ in rolling out the service in both countries.
Currently, you can protect your Apple Watch with a passcode or set it to automatically unlock itself whenever you unlock your iPhone. But if a newly published patent application from the Cupertino firm is anything to go by, the wearable device may soon be able to seamlessly identify the owner with its built-in heart rate sensor.
As published by the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), the invention titled “User identification system based on plethysmography” proposes using a pulse oximeter to intelligently identify biometric characteristics of a user's vasculature.
Periscope, Twitter's live video-streaming app, has been refreshed in the App Store this morning with a few new features related to in-app camera, sharing and more. For starters, you'll notice improved tap-to-focus while broadcasting live video, plus you can now follow a broadcaster from the viewers list with one tap. There are also improvements to Persicope's VIP Program and more.
Google yesterday announced a pretty interesting update to its free of charge Photos application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch which brings out four features driven by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm.
The new version will be rolling out today in the App Store, making it easier to fix some of the pesky sideways photos in your library by suggesting rotations, resurface your forgotten photos for you and more.
Apple has recently introduced CallKit, a new framework available to developers that allows them to integrate their VoIP apps with the native Phone app user interface. In essence, this is a great addition that puts VoIP apps at virtually the same level as normal phone calls. Incoming Skype or WhatsApp calls, for example, are now displayed fully on the Lock screen, which is an improvement compared to how these calls were handled prior to iOS 10. Likewise, any call placed or received with a supported VoIP app will be logged into the Phone app like a normal call.
This tight integration of VoIP apps and the native Phone app UI can have a downside for some users who might prefer not to see their recent Skype calls history show up in their Phone app. If you're one of these people, we'll show you exactly how to stop Skype from showing recent calls in your Phone app.
There are all kinds of swipe gestures you can access on the Lock screen, such as opening Control Center or Notification Center and even using the camera grabber to quickly take a point-and-shoot photo.
While some people like these little shortcuts, not everyone wants them there all the time, so a new free jailbreak tweak called NoLockGestures lets you easily disable all these swipe gestures on demand.
Apple late Wednesday night posted a new commercial to its YouTube channel titled "Explore the All-New Apple Music." The ad showcases the company's revamped streaming music service, spotlighting several of its features.
It works essentially as an overview of the iOS 10 Music app, demonstrating how you can build your own personal music library based on custom recommendations and new content discovered via Apple's Beats 1 Radio station.
A new update for the hit multi-platform game Pokémon GO is now available for avid Pokémon trainers to download. The update is out for iOS users, as well as Android users in their respective application stores.
The new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are "water resistant" (though Apple's warranty doesn't cover liquid damage), and that's fine for accidental spills and splashes, but it's not good enough protection for taking pictures in the pool. For that, you're going to want a waterproof case.
Since the iPhone 7 is still rather new, there aren't a ton of waterproof cases available for it just yet—popular accessory-maker Lifeproof still says 'Coming Soon' on its website—but we were able to put together a list of some solid options based on feedback and features.
Apple on Wednesday made watchOS 3.1 beta 3 available to developers. The release notes don't seem to indicate any new features have been added, but rather that Apple is now focusing on bug fixes and stability improvements, which is to be expected at this point in time.
