Facebook announced yesterday it is now including public posts into search results while bringing personalized suggestions and highlighting popular stories with expanded search functions.

“Today, we’re updating Facebook Search so that in addition to friends and family, you can find out what the world is saying about topics that matter to you,” wrote the social networking firm.

Enhanced search features are currently available across Facebook for iPhone, Android and on the web, to US English users only.

Public posts in search

Aside from posts from friends, searching on Facebook will now surface relevant public posts by others, regardless of whether you’re friends with them or not.

“Search results are organized to help you cut through the noise and quickly understand what the world is saying about a topic in the moment.

You also pull-to-refresh to see the latest public posts.

Improved suggestions and public conversations in search

Typing into Facebook’s search box now offers personalized search suggestions with links to stories that are developing right now. Last but not least, Facebook Search now surfaces important public conversations to ensure you don’t miss trending topics.

You can now find public posts about a widely shared link on Facebook, see popular quotes and phrases mentioned in them and see an aggregate overview of sentiment.

“To help filter through the noise, results will be automatically organized to prefer mainstream news sources, friends, and then lists of popular links and comments, putting comments by strangers in last,” explains AppleInsider.

“This feature is a first step—we look forward to people using it and giving us feedback so we can make it even better,” promises the firm.

Try it out yourself!

Take Facebook’s expanded search features for a spin by searching “Halloween Costumes” or “Mets World Series” on your iPhone. Again, the expanded search features are rolling out in US English only on the iPhone, Android and desktop.

As per the most recent stats, Facebook users conduct an average of 1.5 billion searches per day. The company has indexed over two trillion Facebook posts thus far.
