Uber mobile apps gain turn-by-turn navigation and destination entry features

Uber (destination 001)

Uber, the popular venture-backed ride-sharing service, today announced a pair of useful new additions to its strong arsenal of mobile features, aimed at both drivers and users.

Uber customers can now add a desired destination into the free rider app that the driver will see at pick-up time.

And if you’re a driver using Uber to find customers, Uber’s driver app now supports turn-by-turn navigation for the destination customers have provided in the rider app…

According to Uber, these new features bring Uber closer to its founders’ vision when there is no coordination necessary to take an Uber ride.

  • Destination entry in the rider app. With this update, we’ve made it quick and easy to enter your destination into the rider app, and the driver automatically sees what you’ve entered at pick-up time. You can literally skip the step where you tell the driver where you’re going.
  • Turn-by-turn navigation in the driver app. With one tap, the driver can enable turn-by-turn navigation to the destination you’ve provided. There’s no need to juggle multiple apps or waste time typing in an address.

The aforementioned new features are now live so Uber advises trying entering a destination on your next trip.

Uber (turn by turn 002)

Speaking of Uber, Apple recently lost its senior Maps engineer, Chris Blumenberg, who left his post at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino to join the hot ride-sharing startup.

Uber is available free in the App Store.

The 13.7MB download requires an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad with iOS 6.0 onward.

Have you used Uber and if so, what was your experience like?
