Mobile Substrate updated with handy new disable feature

Saurik is on a roll with his Cydia updates today. Earlier this morning he rolled out a new version of WinterBoard. And now we're going to take a look at the also-new-today Mobile Substrate update.

For those that aren't familiar with it, Mobile Substrate is the de facto framework that allows 3rd-party developers to provide extensions to system functions. And it just received a killer new feature...

Google’s Brin says Apple is “balkanizing the web”

Unless I and pretty much every other journalist out there extrapolated the original report, it appears that Google co-founder Sergey Brin has called out Apple and Facebook for running closed platforms that, in his mind, are "balkanizing the web".

Why? Because apps, media and other content served within these ecosystems is not crawlable by the almighty Google search engine. And even though Google's built an empire on other people's content, Google's co-founder calls the latest trends "scary".

Don't laugh, Brin actually realized a pattern his role model Steve Jobs laid out two years ago...

The best iPad remote desktop solution

I've always been a relatively big fan of Screens — the beautifully designed iOS remote desktop app by Edovia.

Screens has always, and continues to be the most impressive looking remote desktop solution for the iPad; in fact, i'd say nothing comes close when it boils down to pure presentation. For that reason, I've always been very hesitant when it comes to trying anything else. I know, I tend to be a tad superficial when it comes to my apps.

Thankfully I didn't let Screens' beauty stop me from trying another highly touted remote desktop solution called Splashtop. Many of our readers and YouTube viewers have been on me about trying Splashtop for some time now, and I just recently took the plunge. I'm so glad I did...

How to officially unlock your AT&T iPhone without losing your untethered jailbreak

The good news came out a week ago that AT&T would finally allow its customers with an off contract iPhone to officially unlock their device for free. In essence, the steps required to get the ball rolling are pretty simple. You just need to place a call to AT&T or hop on a chat with them online.

After collecting some basic information from you, AT&T will take its sweet time (72 hours to 2 weeks) to verify you are indeed illegible for unlocking your iPhone. Upon approval, you will then receive an email with instructions to complete the unlock.

But the caveat is that, if like many people out there you care about your jailbreak, you might not be able to update without losing your untethered jailbreak. This was one of my main concerns at first. I requested the unlock authorization from AT&T for my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1, and even though it is not my primary device, I didn't want to lose my untether jailbreak.

But unlike the email AT&T sends you upon approval of your iPhone unlock suggests, you do not have to completely restore your iPhone to complete the unlock...

WinterBoard receives major update

WinterBoard. It seems like just mentioning the name of the utility can send shivers down the spine of jailbreakers everywhere. In fact, a lot of folks won't install a particular app or tweak of it requires installing the unpopular themer.

So what's wrong with it? Speed, stability, you name it. WinterBoard has long been a scapegoat for jailbreak-related problems. But the utility may be worth a second look now, as it has just received a major update...

Walmart adopts Apple’s boutique store concept with stylish displays carrying iOS devices

Walmart has been selling the new iPad in select stores since the device launched last month. They've also had other Apple products on offer for some time.

Realizing it leaves a lot to be desired, the world's largest retailer is apparently ready to take the shopping experience for its demanding Apple customers to the next level.

Nice-looking photos of stylish Apple displays inside Walmart's store in Arkansas depict a radical departure from the retailer's otherwise dull and poorly maintained shelves carrying electronics.

Akin to a store-within-a-store idea seen at other retailers, the redesigned Apple section would suggest that the mega-retailer is keen on exploring Apple's boutique store concept...

Apple struggles to reach deal with Australian government over 4G iPad

Last month, word got out that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission was looking to go after Apple over the name of its wireless iPad model: iPad Wi-Fi + 4G. Soon after that, a handful of other countries joined them.

You see, folks are getting upset because Apple's LTE tablet doesn't actually use LTE in any countries outside of the US and Canada. So they want Apple to change its name. And Apple met with the ACCC this morning to talk about it...

Top jailbreak videos of the week

Last week's biggest release was Stride, the 8-bit inspired passcode drawing method for unlocking your iDevice. We highly recommend you check out Stride based on the obvious amount of effort put into creating the tweak. Not only that, but it works really well, too.

But that's not the only top video of the week; there are others as well, as you'll see inside.

Wall Street thinks Apple sold between 26-44 million iPhones last quarter

With Apple's earning release for the past quarter that ended two weeks ago now just eight days away, analysts are running their spreadsheets like crazy, falling over themselves to guesstimate just how many iPhones the company sold.

And as the iPhone lineup accounts for more than half of Apple's revenue, no wonder it's become Apple's most important business metric. AAPL passing the $600 milestone also owes much to the success of the iPhone, as does the company's projected $1 trillion valuation.

It's almost as if Apple's future and fortunes depend solely on the iPhone. With that in mind, seasoned watchers should ask themselves whether Apple can retain its crown of the world's top smartphone maker in the March quarter.

And, is the six-month old iPhone 4S still attractive enough to keep people interested until the fabled iPhone 5 (or whatever it ends up being called) arrives later this year? As always, only time will tell. But one thing is certain: Wall Street has high hopes in Apple's ability to keep the iPhone freight train chugging along...

Could the official Spotify iPad app be revealed this Wednesday?

I don't know what the folks over at Spotify have been thinking all of this time while their competitors have released iPad versions of their mobile offerings, but it looks like they're finally about to snap out of it.

Why we've had to wait so incredibly long for an iPad version of Spotify is anyone's guess, but it looks like a release is finally coming to fruition after what seemed like an eternity of waiting.

Has Spotify been resting on its laurels all of this time, or were they just working on providing the absolute best iPad music experience known to man? If the puzzle pieces fit, we could be finding out very soon...

Rumor: Apple making six million sub-$300 iPad minis for third-quarter launch

According to a new report out of China, Apple is allegedly looking to launch a 7.85-inch iPad model some time in the third quarter of this year. The device is said to be priced between $249 and $299, an obvious effort to compete with Amazon's $199 Kindle Fire that launched last holiday to become by far the most popular Android tablet.

However, the iPad mini is said to be primarily intended to "counter attack" upcoming tablets running Windows 8. If the rumor is true, than the low-cost iPad mini is going after the low-to-mid-end of the tablet market.

But does a miniaturized iPad sound like something Apple would even consider doing?
