SlideWriter: an upcoming app that makes text editing easier on the iPad

Not that we can blame them, but it looks like someone's trying to capitalize off of the attention garnered first by Daniel Hooper's iPad editing concept video, and then again by Kyle Howells' jailbreak tweak that made the concept a reality.

SlideWriter is an upcoming App Store app that will allow you to edit text using techniques made popular by both the concept and the subsequent jailbreak tweak implementation.

The developers of SlideWriter have put together a brief video demo to show how the app works in action. Check it out inside...

Apple files dispute claim with WIPO over the iPhone5.com domain

We love rumors concerning the next iPhone and cherry-pick them carefully - and purely for the sake of discussion. These stories also prompt some of our readers to argue in comments that we here at iDB, as well as other media outlets, stubbornly insist on calling it the iPhone 5 even though it's the sixth model in the series.

The debate has become a tradition of sorts. Of course, we encourage and very much appreciate your views on the subject. Adding fuel to the already heated discussion, it has come to our attention that Apple filed a dispute claim with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) over the iPhone5.com domain.

Now, Apple frequently files such claims and in some instances even buys domain names, especially some forwarding to shady sites. But don't read too much into this latest domain dispute. Per conventional wisdom, the next iPhone is likely be referred to as the new iPhone...

Is Verizon intentionally talking customers out of iPhones?

Of the 6.3 million smartphones Verizon sold last quarter, 3.2 million of them were iPhones. This means it sold more Apple-branded handsets than it did all other smartphones combined. So the carrier must really be pushing these things, right?

Well as it turns out, that doesn't seem to be the case. CNET's Chris Matyszczyk recently went to his local Verizon store to investigate a rumor that Big Red reps were actually purposely diverting iPhone sales. And judging by the account, they are...

RedSn0w updated with minor bug fixes

Two weeks ago, the Dev Team released RedSn0w 0.9.10b8 with the ability to backup your iPhone's activation tickets. The tickets were a crucial part of the popular SAM unlock method.

Today, the Team has released another update to the jailbreaking utility, bringing it to version 0.9.10.b8b. But this time around, the new software only features a couple of bug fixes...

FTC to fine Google millions of dollars over Safari breach

Last month, the Federal Trade Commission was said to be investigating claims that Google was illegally bypassing privacy settings in Safari. The Mountain View company was caught using a loophole in the browser to allow it to track users' online activities without their consent.

If confirmed, the FTC was expected to slap Google with a hefty fine. And it certainly looks like that will hold true, as Bloomberg is out with a new report claiming that the Trade Commission is about to slap the company with reparations worth millions of dollars...

SpotDict: Search iOS’ built in dictionary from Spotlight

Spotlight search is very useful when you actually need to use it, but how many times do you find yourself needing to do so?

If you're anything like me, you can probably count on one hand how many times you've used Spotlight over the past few months.

Perhaps this recently released jailbreak tweak will coerce you into using Spotlight a bit more often? It's called SpotDict, and it allows you to look up words in iOS' built in dictionary directly from the Spotlight search page...

Lost Steve Jobs interview returning to the silver screen on May 11

As we previously reported, Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview hit nineteen Landmark Theaters last November. For those who missed this intriguing documentary, Magnolia Pictures will do another limited run in nineteen cities beginning May 11.

The best skins for your iPhone, iPad, and other devices

I rarely get excited about accessories because I like to keep my devices simple. I've always thought that Apple has done a great job at designing beautiful products, so why would I want to stick my iPhone in a case or apply a skin to it, right?

There is a company out there that has slowly been changing what I think of skins though: iCarbons. I had never heard of them, but because they are also JailbreakCon sponsors, we started talking, and they offered to send me a few of their skins to check out. I've been in love ever since...

iPad text editing concept comes to life thanks to this jailbreak tweak

When Cody posted about Daniel Hooper’s iPad keyboard demo, we had no idea that it would be as popular as it has turned out to be. Thousands of retweets later, the public has spoken out against how terrible the iPad's editing situation is. I think John Gruber summed it up best when he noted that the iPad was a great for typing, but poor for editing.

The iPad keyboard demo video was created with the hopes that Apple would respond and implement something similar in the upcoming version of iOS. There's even instructions included on the video for submitting a bug report to Apple.

Well, Apple may not listen, but someone else did. Indeed, the jailbreak community has responded in a big way. Introducing SwipeSelection — a usable realization of the original iPad concept video...
