Turn Your iPad Into a Phone with Line2

While the iPad's considerable size doesn't particularly lend itself to being a telephone, that hasn't stopped many from wanting to use it as one.

A new app promises to turn our favorite tablet into a 9.7" smartphone, and all for $10 per month, according to AppAdvice.

Starting July 28th, we could be making and taking telephone calls from our iPads using either the in-built mic and speaker, or a bluetooth headset...

New App Store App Brings Flash to the iPhone and iPad [Updated]

It seems like Flash is slowly going the way of the betamax, depending on who you ask. While I myself don't ever feel held back by the fact that my iPhone doesn't support the platform, there are some folks that still feel it's a downfall of the device.

Heck, it seems like "supports Flash" is in nearly every Android phone and tablet commercial. Well, for iPhone users that still feel like they're missing out on something, another Flash-compatible mobile browser has just entered the App Store...

App Picks of the Week: Spotify, Piconhand, Star Trek PADD

Every week iDownloadblog brings a roundup of awesome apps for you to check out and enjoy. We try to vary our picks, but a lot of these apps usually come from the App Store. If an interesting web or jailbreak app catches our eye, we'll include that in our picks as well.

This week, we've got three new apps from the App Store for music lovers, Google+ users, and trekkies. Make it so!

Create Flipbooks From Your iPhone With Only a Few Taps

We all remember flipbooks, right? - A collection of cards, each with an image that, when in sequence, creates a short animation when the cards were flicked through.

Flipbooks were all the rage when I was growing up, and I spent more time than anyone really should trying to create my own (especially considering my drawing skills are, well, let's just say... poor).

Flipbooks are being brought into the the 21st century, and what better tool to use than an iPhone?

Flickbooks is a new app, available now, that promises to take your very own iPhone-recorded videos and turn them into good old fashioned flipbooks...

“The Dark Meadow” Blends Horror with Infinity Blade and Angry Birds

Gaming on iOS devices is taking off these days, with titles such as Angry Birds and Infinity Blade proving as big sellers for their respective development houses.

In fact, those two games are named as the inspiration behind a new title that's due to be released next month, going by the ominous name of The Dark Meadow.

Promising to be a 'modern fairytale' type affair, The Dark Meadow has only been in production for three months, which shows the quick turnaround that the game's Unreal Engine affords...

Mesmerizing iPhone Trek Across Europe

Our iPhones collect all kinds of data, much to the dismay of many a security nut enthusiast. The iPhone stores location data by using cellular masts and Wi-Fi hotspots as a means of pinpointing just where you have been.

When it was discovered that our iPhones were dumping this data into an unencrypted file on our computers, there was public outcry. There were also, as always, even some who thought it was a good idea to go after Apple in the courts.

But what if that location information could be used for something useful, interesting, or even just downright cool to look at?

I present to you, Fireflies HD....

Bad News: iOS 4.3.4 Permanently Kills the 4.3 Untethered Jailbreak

Apple has begun to step up its game with patching jailbreak exploits in iOS. When Comex's PDF exploit was used in the latest version of JailbreakMe, Apple pushed out iOS 4.3.4 about two weeks later to combat the security hole.

Jailbreakers on 4.3.3 (4.2.9 for the Verizon iPhone) can stay on their current firmware to keep their untether, but the bad news is that Apple actually patched the untethered exploit that's been used by jailbreakers since iOS 4.1.

shoulderPad Helps Baddies Steal Your iPad Passwords

Using your iPad in a public place may never be the same again, with news that a new app has been created that allows unscrupulous users to steal passwords from unsuspecting iPad users.

The app, available for iOS devices as well as Apple's Mac platform, uses a camera to watch which keys are being pressed on the iPad - and it's even more clever than that.

Rather than just watching where your finger is pressing on the screen, the new app, called shoulderPad, actually detects the brief, blue flash which occurs when a key is pressed on any iOS on-screen keyboard. This means improved accuracy, as well as a further distance from which this works.

Creepy stuff...

How the iPhone Can Help Detect a Cataract

Geniuses at MIT have come up with a relatively cheap way of detecting cataracts in the human eye by using an iPhone and a clever attachment.

The CATRA system is a hardware device that attaches to an iPhone (and presumably other devices). The CATRA then uses the screen output to detect cataracts.

While we're sure that the underlying technology is much more complicated than that initial explanation, we're sure you get the gist...

Apple Finally Has iPad 2 Shipments Under Control

It seems like a long time ago since This is my next reported on the possibility of an iPad HD this year. 3rd-generation Apple tablet rumors have been running rampant. The next-gen iPad is expected to sport a screen with double the resolution of its predecessor, and debut sometime this fall.

Though the gossip is getting stronger, you can't help but be skeptical, as Apple's never released products in 6-8 month increments. Not only that, but how can they expect to ship a new tablet when they can barely make enough of the previous version to go around?

App Developers Speak Out on Rampant Piracy Problem

While most of us are painfully aware of the app piracy that goes on in the jailbreak community, I don't know if any of us knew it was this bad. TechCrunch highlighted a small iOS software firm last week that has witnessed first hand just how rampant the problem is.

GAMEized is the proud creator of FingerKicks, a simple $0.99 soccer (football) game for iOS devices. The app is the company's first entry into Apple's popular software platform, and it might just be their last...
