The jailbreak community has been nothing but a crazy roller coaster ride lately, especially given the lack of any recent jailbreaks and the permanent archival of both the ModMyi and ZodTTD/MacCiti Cydia repositories. On the other hand, there may (or may not) be exciting news ahead.

While it’s too premature to make any conclusive assumptions at this point in time, there’s been some buzz recently about a couple of iOS exploits that could purportedly pave the way for a so-called “semi-jailbreak” for iOS 11.0-11.1.2.

Sounds exciting, right? That’s what we thought too, but don’t get your panties in a knot just yet. There’s actually more to the story than meets the eye.

One of the first tweets to set off the chain reaction of excitement in the jailbreak community came by way of Ian Beer, who cited his tfp0 security exploit as a potential springboard for something special:

The beautiful part of a tfp0 exploit is that it doesn’t make any modifications to the kernel inside of its “protected areas,” so it shouldn’t set off any red flags for Apple‘s Kernel Panic Protection. With that in mind, his exploit should theoretically work on the iPhone 7 and later, in addition to older devices.

While we don’t know much else about Beer’s exploit, we do know that he plans to release part of it soon.

Having exploits is a great thing, but developing a user-friendly jailbreak tool for the public that installs Cydia is an entirely different venture altogether. While there may be an exploit or two available for use, a talented hacker/developer would still need to bundle it all together with a user-friendly Cydia installer and add some odds and ends to make a publicly usable jailbreak capable of running jailbreak tweaks.

Because no one has completed the second bit yet, we have nothing but a valuable exploit at the moment. Nevertheless, it works on iOS 11.0-11.1.2, so if you have any desire to jailbreak iOS 11, then it might be a good idea to get your device(s) on iOS 11.1.2 as soon as humanly possible.

Should you upgrade from a jailbroken installation of iOS 10 to iOS 11? Good question…

Personally, I wouldn’t. If you’re already comfortably jailbroken on iOS 10, then why risk losing your jailbreak over something that might never materialize? On the other hand, if you’re already running iOS 11, then you really don’t have anything to lose by putting your device on iOS 11.1.2.

Apple still signs iOS 11.1.2 as of this writing, but things won’t stay that way forever. That said, it might be worth downgrading if you have a newer firmware installed, or upgrading if you have a non-jailbroken older firmware installed; this prepares your device just in case something materializes in the future.

Just to reiterate, there’s no jailbreak for iOS 11 as of yet, and there’s no guarantee that an iOS 11 jailbreak will ever materialize. Nevertheless, everything we see right now indicates that iOS 11.1.2 is where everyone should aim to be.

Given that Apple just released iOS 11.2 recently, the iOS 11.1.2 signing window is likely to close very soon. If you’d like to downgrade or upgrade your device, you should probably move forward with it as soon as possible and keep your fingers crossed for good news.

Do you think we’ll see a jailbreak for iOS 11? Let us know in the comments section below.

  • Ronny Llerena

I do believe THERE COULD BE a jailbreak for ios 11.1.2, BUT remember that many of the guys that make these jailbreaks have been taking there business to other people that pay them to not put it out to the public. I think if they asked for a contribution for these jailbreaks maybe they would be a little interested in not selling out . YET we have had some great work done by some guys, and it’s appreciated. Let’s wait and see.

    • ’tis the season. Let’s cross our fingers.

      • besrate hogsa

        please uncross your fingers
there will not be a jailbreak for ios 11 or feature ios
        apple hired all the jailbreakers

      • mickey

        Found Scrooge ??

      • besrate hogsa

        lol?

  • I jumped back down to 11.1.2 this morning on my iPhone X. I’ve been pretty contempt with stock iOS the past few years but now theres so much that can be done on this new hardware I’m actually going to wait for once

    • igobythisname

word is, this exploit isn’t for iPhone 7/8/X, sorry! hopefully soon!

      • Nooo, dont do this to me ;w;

  • David S

How do you update t 11.1.2 if you’re on 11.0, without jumping all the way to 11.2?

    • You basically download the iOS 11.1.2 firmware, and option+click update in iTunes and select the firmware you download to update to iOS 11.1.2.

  • TwinSon

Wish it was 11.2. Don’t want have to choose between Apple Pay having both Apple Pay Cash and Fast Wireless charging on my X vs being JB’d because I’m definitely going with APC and FWC.

    • Eh, I’ll stick with PayPal and the charging speed differences between 5W and 7.5W have been proven negligible. Besides, charging over USB-C power delivery is where it’s at. If you think 7.5W fast wireless charging is “fast,” wait until you try that.

      • TwinSon

Unfortunately, I’m not willing to pay $70-$80 for Apple’s fast charge solution. Scouring Amazon for a USB-C PD adapter and some proven USB-C to Lighting Cables. It’d be nice if IDB did an article for that.

      • There are no Apple-approved third-party USB-C to Lightning cables at this point in time.

  • AhmAd KhAn

Jailbreak is the best thing i have ever got i just love it keep rocking all developer we proud of you ??????
Asap i got the new cydia in ios 11 in sha allah woopiieee??????????

  • Tony Trenkle Jr.

Isnt 11.2 more stable? I dont wanna keep my hopes up when it will just be dashed again. If I did what everyone said before I would still be on ios 9.3…and yeah…dont want that.

    • The general rule of thumb is that newer firmware is more stable. On the other hand, I haven’t had any real problems with any installation of iOS 11.

  • No thanks.

  • droid3000

ive got an ipod touch 6 on 9.3 or something i would stick with the jailbreak but i cant use my wireless headphones with them. can i save the firmware until the jailbreak comes out?

    • You can save the firmware, but you probably wouldn’t be able to restore since Apple will likely close the signing window after then.

      • droid3000

I’m in a bind, I just want my beats to work lol my jailbreak is fine

  • Sebastian Rasch

Not interested in a “semi-jailbreak”. I’d rather stay on stock iOS until a real jailbreak comes around (which might be never).

    • It might be, it might not be. We’ve seen instances where jailbreak teams have made tethered jailbreaks into untethered jailbreaks. So perhaps it would be possible for a semi-jailbreak to become a full jailbreak.

      • Ria1979

I last jb’d iPhone 7 but lost it quite quick. I’ve got iPhone X now. Thing is, at first I missed my tweaks and stuff but now it’s been so long, I don’t miss it. I would like a JB but not as bothered as I used to be. Also semi untethered doesn’t tickle my fancy.

      • Sebastian Rasch

Yes I have the X as well, that’s why I’m on 11.1.2. I do miss my theme and UI hacks a lot though. Stock iOS is quite ugly, the icons above all.

  • besrate hogsa

I used to be an avid jailbreaker
but now apple has caught up
    so jailbreak should just die

    • diggitydang

In my opinion, it’s caught up “ENOUGH”… not caught up. It can never catch up with all of the features that can only be available via a jailbreak. But the trade off in security and most up-to-date software is enough to forego a few features.

      • David Gow

Yes a jail broken phone is way cooler lol. I sure miss mine

    • Alex

Almost right. But I have 3 reasons to stay on jailbreak:
      – I like to see my upcoming events right on the lock screen (Calendar for Lockscreen).
      – LivePhoto (on my iPhone 6)
      – SwipeSelection

      • besrate hogsa

I upgraded to iPhone 10 because my iPhone 6 plus became really slow
I thought live photos runs only on iPhone 6s and above

      • Alex

it does, but there’s a FLEX-tweak that enables it on earlier devices. And I love that feature…

      • DK90

Iphone X has swipe Selection built into stock with force touch. Iphone X doesn’t need Swipe Selection You press a little more on the keyboard and slide your finger and the cursor moves around. Iphone X could use key shortcuts. and forward delete words as well as old status bar. I don’t like the new statusbar not showing all the icons on status bar. You can have a 2 row statusbar on the iphone X and customize the icons on the rows. The icons have a big blank space above them where the rest of the statusbar could be instead of just on the ears. Iphone x will definetely like mesalation so can set faceID to be required after 5 mins instead of immediately. Furthermore Iphone x could benefit from Multask of showing close button on each app without having to hold the app or a clear all button. Don’t understand why iphone x doesn’t have rotation mode like Iphone plus models. The screen is bigger so it should be on par on the plus model so apple should have the rotation mode allowed for the iphone X. In conclusion, Jailbreak will definitely benefit IPHONE X.

      • Icebox766

Wait, there’s no landscape rotation for apps that support it on the X? Or even default apps? I missed that, this is news to me.

      • DK90

yes there is rotation support for the apps that support it like facebook, messages, etc, but not the home screen or settings like on a iphone plus models.

      • mickey

        Some corrections:

-3D Touch keyboard cursor has existed since the 6s

-The X screen is longer but not bigger than the Plus

    • mickey

Plenty of us would be happy to continue jailbreaking. Perhaps you should just leave and let the rest of us be.

      • besrate hogsa

As I have the right to express my opinion so do you….
        peace ?

  • Juan Felipe Gutierrez

What would you do if you’re on 10.3.3?

    • Me personally? iOS 11.1.2. I’d rather have a chance at jailbreaking the newer firmware.

      • sbimos

I’m also on 10.3.3, after I followed similar advice to “not miss out” on an imminent 10.3.3 jailbreak that never appeared. Instead, I missed out on Yalu.

      • sbimos

        Called it:

        >ios-10.3.3-jailbreak-root-exploit-announced

Pick your poison ios and wait.

  • Alex

I thought I was saving my TSS just for that reason??! Can’t I stay on 10.x and wait until a jailbreak is released and than just upgrade to 11.1.2 with my saved TSS’s even it is out of signing window?

    • Barry Schroeder

Great question. That was my understanding as well.

  • Felipe Queiroz Drumond

I doubt they will have, even release a stable JB for iOS 11 before the next major update (iOS 12).

  • Adrien Hill

People who think JB should die-out obviously weren’t or aren’t Tweaking their device right.

    • Ria1979

Been there, done that. Semi untethered isn’t really a ‘real’ JB. Until a real one comes along I just don’t fancy ‘a car without an engine’.

      • mickey

Understand that some people move on from jail breaking. But how I semi untethered not a “real” jailbreak?

  • Boaz van Veen

Is it possible getting to 10.1 while on 11.2 now, keeping the data backed up and made on 11.2?

  • Icebox766

As 11.0 to 11.1.2 all have a bug that affected a game I play, not going to sit on 11.1.2 waiting an indeterminate amount of time as I’ve been sitting on 10.3.1 for a very long time with no payoff. When I get an X it’s going straight to 11.2. Hopefully that will get jailbroken, but I don’t expect one anytime soon.

    • sbimos

I hadn’t heard heard this. Any link? Thanks

      • Icebox766

Looks like my link is being moderated. But in the interim, you can do the google search “IOS 11 and RR3” and you’ll see EA support in the results, that’s the link I was giving you.

    • mickey

Is there big changes from 11.1.2 to 11.2 for the X (other than the wireless charging boost)? I’d imagine there’s no harm on sitting on it and seeing how this pans out.

      • Icebox766

Apple Pay cash and 7.5w wireless charging, plus bug fixes. I can’t answer whether sitting on 11.1.2 works for you, but I know it won’t work for me because the bug in 11.1.2 for RR3 is a dealbreaker for me.

  • DK90

where is Keen Lab jailbreak ?

    • Rayane Merabet

private security research not for public release , expect if you have in off money to compete with apple or the NSA

  • iOS Kush

I cant think of anything worth getting for my iPhone X. I’m pretty content with how it is. If BiteSms returned then maybe.

  • Kosta

If JB is legal as it is made like that..why cant we have an option to do so at our own “risk”..love my iPhone (still on 6+) and i love the fact i can make some efforts with my phone because of the JB..im not buying the new one just because i cant do some stuff im used to..those who dont wanna jb your phone just dont, but let us have that!..for example ive got a new iPad pro..would love to connect an usb and watch a movie on it and play an mp3..or just download an mp3 or something on it..but that is all locked down..why?..look at android..all open..dont like it but its open….just gutted with this..:-(

    • Rowan09

You can download on iOS through safari and multiple apps now for a very long time. You don’t need to connect a USB either since you can also install movie apps straight from the internet. Android is not very open by the way compared to when it was released. You can’t do anything with Googles apps, but you can do some things with Apple’s stock apps. Android is locked down in its own ways just like Apple.

      • Kosta

If i install a movie app i have to pay for that movie..or connect the iTunes then convert..& with a JB device i just transfer or plug & play..as for the download on safari please recommend a way how can i download an mp3 without dropbox?..i use one site for music whitch i pay but i cant download music from it not even to dropbox and on my iPhone i have safari download manager & it works like a charm..
There are also a lot of features i use because of the jb..as the answering machine (in my country we dont have voice mail & the one we have is expensive), instagram save pics option, etc.

      • Rowan09

You can install for example install movie box, emulators, etc without a jailbreak. You can also just download any mp3 from the web and especially since they have the files app it makes it easier to find the files. Before IOS7 you could download apps from the app with its own browser and download manager. Android and IOS are a lot more now than different. I love jailbreaking to free up the device, but it is becoming far less needed.

      • Boaz van Veen

thats piracy mostly. Im not interested in piracy, im interested in tweaking, especially for the X wich needs some heavy tweaking to fix alot of stuff.

      • Rowan09

What was mentioned above was about free stuff not really tweaks. I would love a jailbreak even though I barely use any tweaks.

    • mickey

It doesn’t benefit Apple in any way to let us jailbreak, even officially and voiding our warranty etc… if you want more freedom android is there for you.

      • Kosta

They say it doesnt benefit them..but trust me they are the ones behind a lot of jailbreakers..im convincet they founded a lot of projects in the jb world..as threw that they can see what the people want, use & need..then they slowly, piece by piece, implement them in their new iOS. I want more freedom with my iPhone and iPad.. 🙂

      • mickey

They don’t benefit in the sense that letting people freely use their system openly is not their vision for how iOS should be used and represented. I want freedom as well, but I’m not expecting Apple to give it to us anytime soon.

      • Kosta

        i agree..

  • Rayane Merabet

I don’t follow so many thread on r/jailbreak reddit or GitHub but why there is no crownfounding for jailbreak ? At the moment i’m on 10.2 yalu jailbreak on my 6S daily device so it’s all good , but i want to help to keep alive jailbreak community and want to see further , maybe with an iPhone X jailbreak, that’s can be completely mad !

  • sbimos

I don’t play much of anything. Just wanted to understand what it might affect. Thanks for the link.

  • brandon hennen

Would this work on iOS 11.1?

    • Sebastian Rasch

Yes, read the article – “11.1.2 or below”.

  • Jason

Is it worth upgrading from 10.3.3 to 11.2.1 now? Or stay where I’m at? I’m having a hard time choosing to upgrade or not to upgrade to the latest firmware. Any advices would be appreciated.

  • Da Pigeon Boi

ID LOVE AN IOS 11 JAILBREAK ON MY IPHONE 6s. IT WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE
