The popular 3D Touch app switcher gesture that was intentionally removed from the initial release of iOS 11 has been brought back in iOS 11.1 beta 2.

Apple seeded iOS 11 beta 2 to its registered developers earlier today.

First implemented in iOS 9, the gesture lets you invoke the iOS app switcher by pressing the left edge of the screen with 3D Touch. All iPhones from iPhone 6s onward feature 3D Touch.

If you press firmly on the left side of the screen, you jump straight to the iPhone multitasking switcher where you can force-quit apps by swiping them up, browse your recently used apps by swiping the thumbnails left or right or bring any app to the foreground by tapping it.

The video embedded below shows the gesture in action.

You can also press the left edge of the screen lightly then drag all the way to the right to cycle between two apps, letting you quickly switch back to the last app in one swipe.

Apple’s Federighi explained they’ve had to temporarily drop support for the gesture “due to a technical constraint” while promising to bring it back via an upcoming iOS 11.x update.

Are you happy that Apple is bringing the 3D Touch app switcher back?

Is it just me who found it not so user friendly this 3D touch switcher? like if I press hard on the side then it will work which is quite annoying if there is a case on and makes my thumb sour.

Maybe your 3D Touch press setting is set too hard, try setting it to Medium or Soft instead and then you’ll see how convenient this feature is.

Definitely a tougher gesture if you have a case with edges that go over the side of the phone or if you have a glass screen protector. But definitely a convenient one for those of us that go caseless and with no screen protector!

Whoa, Christian—14 home screens. And I thought I had too many apps! LOL

  • Mr_Coldharbour

Please bring back the old CC behaviour with WiFi and bluetooth radios and then I JUST might consider the thought of updating to iOS 11. But the 3D Touch app switcher feature coming back is welcome.

      please stay on iOS 10

      • Mr_Coldharbour

        Oh I intend to.

I WAS staying on 11.0 for jailbreka reasons on my 8 Plus, but this made me update.

I wonder if Reachability for the iPhone X will be ready by the time the phone launches next month…

Finally. What’s left is the wifi and Bluetooth toggle behaviour

Notification Centre too, I can’t stand the fact that my default view is not the Today/widgets screen anymore. The only reason I ever use NC is to be able to get a quick glance at my widgets.

      • I feel you.

Just swipe from the left on Lock Screen or Home Screen

      • Mr_Coldharbour

I know you can already do that. My point is that when in an app prior to iOS 11 you could just invoke it with one swipe from the top bottom, now it’s an extra swipe (top to down then leftward swipe). Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

I only shared my UX, you don’t have to like it.

Been waiting for this but the old version of the 3d touch app switcher was much better. This new version lags quite a bit. The visuals stutters when the app zooms into view after you have 3d touched, draged and released. The old version was buttery smooth.

This is strange as the app switcher doesn’t stutter at all, only the 3d touch stutters.
