iPhone 6 vs iPhone 5s (hand 002)

Having started taking pre-orders for Apple’s unreleased and still unofficial iPhone 6 a good five days ago, carrier China Mobile has now posted to its official website what it claims are official hardware specifications of the 4.7-inch version of the handset, GforGames reported Monday afternoon.

Some of the more surprising hardware and design features of the handset reportedly include water and dust-resistance and sapphire protection for the display, allowing for a virtually unbreakable device.

However, it’s impossible to determine whether China Mobile is making an educated guess or if the firm is in fact relaying Apple-sanctioned information. In case of the former, China Mobile could easily get reprimanded for leaking out its partner’s secrets ahead of tomorrow’s big reveal.

This tidbit comes after rival China Telecom said recently that a single iPhone 6 model supports all the major wireless standards in the 1.33 billion people market.

In a not-so-smart PR stunt, their post was accompanied by a set of pretty iPhone 6 renderings which creators Tomas Moyano and Nicolàs Aichino posted on Bēhance. It’s worth keeping in mind that China Mobile is the world’s largest mobile operator by market capitalization, its subscriber base dwarfing AT&T and Verizon combined.

Before we get to the meaty bits, China Mobile’s post affirms the rumored September 19 release date that the French blog iGen.fr mentioned earlier today. For reference, September 19 is the Friday the week after tomorrow’s announcement.

But unlike iGen, China Mobile says only the 4.7-inch handset will hit their store shelves come September 19. That China Mobile didn’t have 5.5-inch iPhone 6’s specs may be interpreted as yet another sign of the two phones not launching simultaneously.

Here’s what China Mobile is calling for:

  • Apple A8 chip with quad-core processor
  • 1,134-by-750 resolution Retina display with sapphire glass protection
  • 8-megapixel main camera coupled with a 2.1MP front-facing shooter
  • 16/32/64/128GB storage tiers
  • Gold, White and Black finishes
  • iOS 8
  • Dimensions: 138 (H) x 67 (W) x 7mm (D)
  • Nano SIM-card
  • Waterproof and dustproof

A few thoughts:

  • Recent reports have re-ignited rumors that Apple will be joining the megapixel race with Sony’s 13-megapixel Exmor IMX220 camera sensor on the 5.5-inch model.
  • The new 128GB tier is thought to be exclusive to the 5.5-inch variant.
  • Chinese media think the Apple-designed A8 chip is dual-core (with quad-core graphics) and clocked at two GHz or more per core; this is the first time we heard about a quad-core CPU inside the A8.
  • The 4.7-inch model is expected to have a screen resolution of 1,704-by-960 pixels with ultra-sharp images at 416 pixels per inch, especially compared to the current iPhone’s 326ppi Retina screen; the claimed 1,134-by-750 resolution, in my personal view, is nonsensical given the four-inch 1,136-by-640 screens on the iPhone 5/5c/5s.
  • Assuming the dimensions are correct, the 4.7-incher is going to be 14.2mm taller, 8.4mm wider and 0.6mm thinner than the iPhone 5s.
  • None of the leaked parts corroborates the theory on a waterproof/dustproof iPhone 6.

Again, this post is live on China Mobile’s official webpage where they are collecting pre-orders for the forthcoming devices. Now, I don’t pretend to be an expert in China, but I’d be surprised if the world’s top carrier dared publicize fake specs.

Feel free to add your observations down in the comments.

  • Chris Gilmore

If the iPhone is really waterproof, Tim should walk out with the phone and “trip” and drop the phone in a bucket of water right at the beginning of the conference.

    • Jordan Dixon

      This isn’t a Samsung conference.

      • Chris Gilmore

It’d change up the lame pace a little and lighten the mood… and frankly just shock the hell outta everybody.

      • Hahaha, can’t stop laughing 😀

      • First thing I thought. How Samsungian do you think Apple has become? If this is true, this gets no more than a bullet point or two on a slide.

      • Jason B

ALS ice bucket challenge, accepted…seriously doubt this at all…

      • Chris Gilmore

lol same. I just thought it’d be hilarious.

    • Vighnesh Manick

They should have the iPhone with Siri saying that I accept the ice bucket challenge that was given by Samsung and then dumps the ice water on it

      • Chris Gilmore

I say one-up them, submerge it in the water. Show that it’s waterproof and not water resistant.

      • Danial

        Galaxy S5 challenged iPhone 5s not 6

      • Jeffrey Feuerstein

No, they challenged the iPhone in general

      • Danial

go watch the video again before commenting

      • snj12341

damn, this samesung just reversed the 5s of iphone and made s5 🙂

    • danger2u

if Steve Jobs was still allive,i am sure that he do it!

      • Yujin

if he was still alive he would challenge the samsung CEO and make him look like the dumb ass he is lol

    • Yujin

or accept the samsung ice bucket challenge.

  • Arthur Larin

Did they not mention the NFC chip??

Specs from the china site regarding the 4.7

      • Arthur Larin

Damn. Better than a yes or a no.

      • avd98

1810 mAh battery? Please tell me it’s fake, i was hoping for a 2915 mAh…

      • Kenrick Fernandes

That’s the stupidest specs ever. As it is the 1560 maH battery on the 5s is a joke. And to top it off they now increase the screen size with a 1810 mAh battery. What a joke!

  • iBanks

  • Arthur Larin

    Also adios life proof.

  • Andres

    “Lifeproof case included”

  • Jonathan

If all this is true, plus there aren’t any ugly antenna on the back, this will truly be the best phone ever built in history.

    • Arthur Larin

I agree. The antenna breaks have kinda gotten on my nerves and i’ll be slightly disappointed if they ends up on the legitimate design.

    • avd98

Those antennas are just sad, and i would not doubt it if appears on the final piece. Remember those terrible ugly cases matches for the 5C that Jony Ive presented last year? Despite being the most respected designer in the world, his ideas are getting pretty messed up.

    • Gary LE

Isnt the bulging camera more uglier than the antenna lones?

      • Jonathan

I guess in my opinion no. I have an iPod Touch 5 that has the bulging camera. I’m used to it and it never bothered me. So I guess not.

    • Danial

      8MP is “The Best”??

      • Waleed

        Higher resolution

      • Jonathan

Don’t forget all the other specs of the camera. Megapixels ain’t everything.

      • Kurt

OIS is most important to me

  • InfinitePlusOne

If the specs are everyone claiming, then I couldn’t care less about antenna break looks. I will put on a case anyway! Shut up and take my money! Even if it’s £1000

  • JulianZH

    dat screen resolution………

  • Brian 

Wasn’t there a leaked power button that had a black rubber around it that was posted here on iDB? Sounds like a waterproof technique to me.

    • Jamessmooth

I was going to say the same thing. Surprised that hasn’t been brought up.

  • avd98

Wow, if its true, the 5.5 inch will be pretty expensive. Probably above the average, since they’ll have to cover the production expenses, which are very expensive: Saphire display costs an absurd compared to Gorilla Glass, and making it waterproof? I would say that the start price would be U$800

    • MikeOxlong

Sapphire alone does not warrant a massive increase in production costs. On average itis about 3 fold vs gorilla glass, HOWEVER – the difference is only about 7 bucks ($3 vs $10)…

      • Brian 

For the material alone, yes. Add the R&D it cost Apple to develop the techniques to create the material, plus their cost of their new Sapphire plant, and finally stamp the Apple Tax on it, and you got yourself a premium item that they will charge more than the $7 difference for.

      • MikeOxlong

Note, I wasn’t commenting on what they’ll charge for the sapphir, merely pointing out the cost difference via gorilla glass. And the numbers I pointed out include everything you mentioned, not just the material costs. All of this has been covered online ad-homonym as Corning is quite afraid of this new coming tech.

  • Abbas

When is Apple going to bring 1080p to IPhone ? 🙁 android is roaming around in 1440p lol.

    • Kamran Mackey

Apple iPhones don’t need to be 1080p for them to be good.

      • Danial

        How old are you?

      • Trevor Phillips

        Why are you so mad?

    • felixtaf

Tell me how many apps/games/videos available to enjoy that display?

LG G3 failed miserbly with QHD. Have to wait and see for Samsung’s display!

      • Abbas

Yes, that’s right but with Apple dev’s will push for the 1080p. App’s environment is quite difference with Apple products.

    • Kurt

We are still waiting for 720p and you want 1080p? iPhone is 640p

      • Abbas

IPhone 6 plus has 1080p.. im just about to explode 😀 😀 :D:D:D:D:D:D

  • Unicorn Drank

They seriously need to stop making phones with 16GB, it should not be the standard anymore.

    • Kenrick Fernandes

unless they decided to implement a SD-Card

    • Waleed

We don’t want it to be more expensive plz

    • archer14

Thank god they don’t think like the oaf that you are.

      • Unicorn Drank

If you think I am an oaf for thinking that, then you need to stop having your thumb up your apple. When I was employee by them more then 60% of people that I interacted with wished they would have purchased a bigger storage iDevice. Now that my company gave me a 16gb iphone I can’t really do much with it, with all the picture taking that goes on now a-days.

  • Matt Taylor

“None of the leaked parts corroborates the theory on a waterproof/dustproof iPhone 6.”

Apart from the sleep button with a rubber seal, that iDB posted about a few days ago :-/

  • jack

    Custom screen sizes

  • Warmachine69

No iPod touch, iPad or Apple TV rumors ;(

    • Kamran Mackey

Honestly i don’t see them coming out with a iPod touch 6th Generation anytime soon.

  • Mikasa Ackerman

Dust proof, now these rumors are just getting redicilous.

  • Rook HD

a waterproof phone would be a game changer!!!

  • Anthony Snyder

The current iPhone display is 1136×640… doesn’t even make sense.

    • Kenrick Fernandes

  • Waleed

Idk why, but i think it will really be water proof ! It would be awesome !

  • Jason Whitaker

    1) 1,134-by-750 resolution –iDownloadblog quoting China Mobile. (I think they typo’d it.. should read 1,334×750)
    2) 960 x 1704 pixels, 4.70 inches / 5.5 inches
    ??? It can’t be both ???
If calculating the above resolutions, the screen sizes would be:
    ~2.31″ x 4.10″ (58.7mm x 104mm) for the 4.7
    **Note this is 16:9 screen ratio** with 416ppi (4.7″); 356ppi (5.5″).

***1,334×750 is more likely the resolution for the 4.7″ because it maintains the 326ppi Retina specs that are on the 5s/5c/5/4S***

Apple “Retina” display patent already has the specs of a 5.5″ display on file that is 534ppi (2560×1440) still 16×9. I suspect this to be the resolution of the 5.5″ IPS screen. 2.7″x4.8″ (68.6mm x 122mm)
***Ironically this is the same as the LG G3***

  • thanks good. 🙂
