Apex 2

Apex 2 is the sequel to the original jailbreak tweak, which allowed users to group app icons in folder-like structures. The update, which is compatible with iOS 7, was just released today.

Like its predecessor, Apex 2 allows users to group up to four additional sub-apps to a primary app icon. Each sub-app can be revealed by performing a swipe up, swipe down, or double-tap gesture on the primary icon.

We got our hands on the final build of Apex 2, and like always, we’ve created a video walkthrough for your enjoyment. Have a look inside to see what makes Apex 2 tick.

Once you install Apex 2, you can start using it immediately. You’ll need to perform a swipe up or swipe down gesture to reveal the four placeholder spots where each sub-application can be assigned. Once you perform the swipe gesture, tap the ‘+’ sign on the placeholder spot, and scroll through your list of installed applications, selecting the app of your choice. You can do this three additional times in order to reach the maximum allotment for sub-apps for any one app icon.

Apex 2 SubApps

Apex 2 allows users to not only scroll through a list of installed apps, but also search using the search box at the top of the sub-app selection screen. By using the search option, users can quickly locate any app installed on a device.

Apex 2 Settings

To visualize which apps have sub-apps assigned to them, a visual indicator option has been included in Apex 2’s preferences. The visual indicator can be small previews of each app assigned, or can instead consist of ambiguous grabber indicators. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can outright hide the visual indicators. Of course, one would have to be well-versed on which app icons have sub-apps assigned when selecting this option.

Apex 2 Visual Indicator

The next option included in Apex 2’s preferences, is an option to select how sub-apps are accessed. By default, the tweak allows you to use a swipe-up or a swipe-down gesture to invoke the sub-app selection screen. In addition, users can opt to add a double-tap gesture as a means to invoke the sub-app screen.

Apex 2 Sub App Access

Another new feature included with Apex 2 is the ability to add a tap-on-status bar gesture to invoke the Spotlight search box. Since the nature of the pull down gesture can interfere with the typical method for invoking Spotlight, users opting to use the pull-down gesture with Apex 2 may decid that using a tap on the status bar is the wise way to go.

Apex 2 Spotlight

The final three options contained in Apex 2’s settings—close on launch, aggregate badge count, and allow creation of new—are all options that I recommend leaving on. I especially appreciate the aggregate badge count option, which compiles the badge counts for all apps as if they were placed inside of a legitimate folder.

Apex 2 3 options

Ultimately, Apex 2 is not a groundbreaking update and it probably won’t pull in new users who weren’t a fan of the original. That said, Apex 2 is a solid iOS 7 update to one of the more innovative tweaks of last gen. The excellent design, outstanding animations, and practicality make this a tweak that I can wholeheartedly recommend without much hesitation. Go get it, and report back down in the comment section below.

7.1.1 jailbreak lets go. Lmao. Guess I’ll wait to try this when iOS 8 comes out.

    • First you will wait for iOS 8, Then for an iOS 8 jailbreak and then for apex to be updated for iOS 8. It’s a long and vicious cycle.

      • mlee19841

I know. But holding on for hope. Lmao. I0n1c just posted on his twitter prepare for Sunday and he will get a lot of hate on Monday. Don’t know if that holds any water. Just gotta wait and see

      • XboxOne

        He wont release it!

    • Damian

So you will wait one year

  • Jhonny Lennon

I suppose it won’t work if the icon layout is modified (via Springtomize)

    • Chris

      Yes it does!

      • Jhonny Lennon

Yes it does! I’m actually surprised and happy it does! I did mention it because I had a bad experience with Apex “1”

      • Abbas

if you have changed the icon size through springtomize then there is an odd second delay each time you open an app with apex 2 installed.

Do the gestures interfere with activator actions on app icons?

  • Varun Soi

    Cool tweak useful and easy!

  • wiety

Does anybody of you experience a little glitch on the ipads? tweak works quite well except that when the icons are grouped together then all the icon names remain visible. Normaly only the “leading” first icon should be …
except of that i had just only one springboard crash and whats funny on it, is that it was a conflict between Asphaleia and Apex so i think both from A3tweaks 🙂

    • Yeah, Apex 2 is an amazing shortcut to Safe Mode. Love it!

  • Looks cool, but noting more practical than folders…

    • fb2

Yes, that’s right, but for some people it’s useful 😉

I use activator which does exactly the same and in my opinion even better. Just create a menu in Activator and set as much apps and also actions in the menu, then assign a swipe/double tap/hold action for a specific app, e.g. camera app which invoke the camera menu (which you created previously 😉

  • Framboogle

As usual another kickass tweak by A3Tweaks!

  • jocastro

ive notice when you try adding not all apps are on the list? any buddy have that problem

    • Al

      Yes, I’ve had it.

All I try to do is attempt to use Apex on the missing app.. Eventually it will show itself when trying to group the missing app.

      • JohannASSburg

That’s what I’ve found too. swiping on the app you want to sub group makes it appear for the other app. It was so frustrating haha

  • Al

Any one experience a freeze when opening an app from an Apex grouping?

    • Justin

I’m also having this issue, but I’ve applied a temporary fix by going into the accessibility settings and turning on the Reduce Motion setting.

      • Al

        Thanks for the heads up.

I was under the impression it had something to do with Springtomize.

        Do you have Springtomize installed?

      • Justin

Yes, I have Springtomize, and that’s what was causing the freezing for me. After turning off the resize dock setting, the problem seems to be fixed.

  • Tony

Definitely a glitch that makes icons disappear just leaving the name. Fix that and I would be happy.

  • Harold Rodríguez

Using Auxo 2, when you try to go back to the srpingboard (when inside an app) the animation (going back to the springboard) gets too slow. =(

    • Inseltraeumer

Selecting no preview or grabbers fixed the lag for me

      • Harold Rodríguez

        It did work, thank you.

  • onesimpleclickk

I payed for Apex, and only used it once. Waste of money..

    • White Michael Jackson

      HA!!!!

  • Oscar Perez

It makes my iPhone crash on 7.0.2

    • nrubin29

      Same problem!

  • Eyal Rotem

is it in any way compatible with gridlock?
or the Springtomize custom rows columns?

  • Diego Milano

Great news. I will run this as a pilot on my iPhone 5 before risking my iPhone 5s into crashing or who knows what issues lie behind. It’s another A3tweaks toy but I’m being careful still.
Thanks for the hard work on this.

    • Diego Milano

It works very well even with icon animations brought by Springtomize. On a side note, they will need to fix a minor issue where the expanded app icons from the dock app icons are not correctly spaced. In other words, the space between these should be increased.

  • AOGV

Hey man what’s that cursor on your screen? Are you using touchpóse or something else?

  • MinhNghiax

    iPad compatibility ?

  • Guilherme Ernesto Militz

Apex 2 causes a conflict with Auxo 2.
When performing the quick close gesture(swipe up from botton right) the closing animation is really choppy. It’s a kind of glitch.
Also, it seams to be causing the springboard to crash sometimes.

  • Ewaldi

Every time I use Apex my iphone crashes, somebody have a solution ?

  • Callbar is out now for IOS 8 and Apex is being submitted to Cydia. Not sure on Auxo or Bite.

  • Özün Kıvanç Keskin

I dont düwland apex 2. Please help me
