iOS 7 Safari

When Apple’s SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue during yesterday’s keynote said that Siri in iOS 7 will integrate Bing web search results, everyone went silent. While Google is still the default search engine in Safari, Apple will pre-install the Yandex search engine in Russia and several other countries, a Russian newspaper reported Tuesday. The development could signal Apple’s intention to gradually distance itself from Google search…

According to RIA Novosti, a state-owned news agency based in Moscow, iOS 7 users in Russia, Ukraine and Turkey report that Apple pre-installed several search engines including Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yandex, in the Safari browser.

Neither Apple’s own press release nor the company’s iOS 7 web page mentions Yandex among the pre-installed search engines. Yandex itself has not commented on the information.

Notably, Apple started co-operating with Yandex on mapping data with the introduction of iOS 6 last year. Last September, TechCrunch learned from its sources close to the situation that Yandex and Apple are working on an even bigger deal, one in which “Yandex would become the default search on the mobile version of Safari.”

Yandex is Russia’s dominant search engine, accounting to nearly two-thirds of search queries in the 143 million people market. Per LiveInternet stats, mobile and desktop Safari has a sixteen percent share of Russia’s browser market.

Of course, pre-loading Yandex in iOS 7 Safari in certain markets doesn’t mean getting rid of Google altogether as users can always choose their default search engine in Settings > Safari.

On the other hand, given that average users use their device as-is, without bothering to customize search engine settings, changing defaults to a non-Google search engine will surely significantly impact Google’s search traffic from iOS devices.

Analysts estimate Google pays Apple a billion dollars each year to be the default search engine in iOS. And with iOS earning Google four times the Android revenue in search and related traffic, removing Google from Safari in iOS 7 would hit the Internet giant where it hurts the most.

That’s not saying power users would welcome the move. Google, after all, is still by far the best search engine out there.

Is it just me or is it your position as well that Apple is fighting Google at the expense of its user base?

My iphone 4 cant handel the new tabs
I hope it because it just a beta

    • Adham

I am on a 5 and it doesn’t run smoothly. iOS 7 is quite a new OS so it’s expected not to run as normal and be quite buggy. I would expect quite a few beta versions before the final in the fall.

      • that’s due to beta nature of iOS 7. the slugishness of iOS betas usually persists until a release candidate is out

      • Mohammad Ridwan

Let’s hope so.. and I’m sure Apple will perfect it…

      • Jason Duong

Tabs tabs run smooth on my iPhone 5, however disqus does not. Typing characters is delayed, trying to click reply is almost impossible as the vote up/down arrow and the share features get in the way, I some times get thrown all the back up to the top of the page, when voting up a comment, it displays a list of people who also voted up that comment and the list does not disappear unless you tap on the comment, when there are multiple replies to a comment the chat box is squished and elongated to the right side of the page as well, it’s almost impossible to edit what you’ve already typed because disqus sometimes bugs and doesn’t let you type unless you click done on the keyboard and tap the text box again. lol wtf. typed this on my iPhone. it’s late and I have no idea why I’m typing this, and why it’s so long.

      • mehrab

Lol thats happening ryt now in ios 6 too the new disqus sucks for mobile users

      • Adham

I am finding the buggiest app to be Messages atm. Doesn’t even seem to be completed, since it is lacking some of the things mentioned in the preview video for Messages app.

      • Gorgonphone

yeah ji hope that crappy UI look is also lust “beta”

      • Jason Duong

The old icons were better IMHO, but some elements from iOS 7 are done better than iOS 6.

If you think you can do a better job, then go right f–king ahead and show us the results. Until then, stfu and stop trolling on iDB.

Do you have the 3d thing on your iphone 4?

      • jocastro

i have it working on my jailbroken iphone 5 haha 😛

      • Gorgonphone

me too but that tweak is kinda goofy…lol

Do you have your 3D working on your iphone 4?

      • David Gitman

      • mehrab

If your a dev why dont you update ypur iphone its realllly old you know

      • felixtaf

What if he needs to test his new app on an iPhone 4??

    • Om

Hey, how’d you get iOS 7 on your iPhone 4?

      • David Gitman

        I am a developer

      • Om

        Oh okay. Thanks!

    • Brandon Weidema

in betas, code is usually un-optimized so its much quicker and easier to make rapid changes. The final version will be much snappier.

    • babiloe

Maybe it’s time for quad core engine will come appear on iPhone 6, after stock apps iOS 7 become killer apps

  • voyaflexel

    What about ios for ipad?

    • R4

it will be released for anyone with developers license in a week or 2

  • TesticularFortitude

“Is it just me or is it your position as well that Apple is fighting Google at the expense of its user base?”

    • Joseph

Then tell me more about the outrage with Bing replacing Google on Siri, and Apple Maps.

      • TesticularFortitude

        I love it!!!

      • R4

idk why people complain about apple maps, i love it

      • TesticularFortitude

        Me too… but I’m told it’s because I’m just a blind fanboy.

      • Gorgonphone

the search part of it suuuuucks very very badly… it cant find half the stuff that google maps can find

  • Yandex? I never, never, ever heard about this one.

    • R4

      its for eastern European countries

    • Vitaliy Anonymous

I love it, and have to say it is waaayyyy better than Google. The amount of censorship coming in to Google is enormous. As a Russian, it is now even harder even to search for Russian songs legally because of how horrible the MPAA/RIAA anti-piracy system is. Yandex is just wonderful.

  • DorianK

and I assume no duckduckgo pre installed? I’d love to use that over google any day.

    • R4

      yeah me too :/

Edit: okay now why is someone disliking all comments about duckduckgo?

  • mav3rick

They’re just cornering themselves thinking they’re almighty. But after this black-and-whiteOS, which it’s said having a vision because is pure plain basic 60% white with sketched buttons and childish icons, crumbles will start to fall.

  • AppleAnalist

I find it quite stupid that people are crying over the bugs in iOS 7 here. This is what happens when mostly snotty nosed non devs download a beta then fill places like Disqus with comments. Shouldn’t you be sending feedback to Apple? Isn’t that what having the beta is for?

  • Roshan

Why not Apple start their own search engine and dump Google. 😛

  • joseph

I use Yandex outside russia..while searching in english..i’m surprise it can compete to google..and much lightweight
