Apple has been taking a lot of heat over the past few days regarding its new Maps application. The company released iOS 6, the latest update to its mobile OS, to the public on Wednesday, which features the new Google Maps replacement.

Inaccuracies and missing features in the app have spawned a parody Tumblr and Twitter account, in addition to quite the uproar in the tech world. And it looks like Motorola is looking to capitalize on the criticism, with its new “iLost” ad…

AndroidCentral points to a new advertisement that just popped up on Motorola’s Google+ page that features the iPhone 5 and Motorola’s new Droid RAZR M. Each has their respective Maps app loaded, and as you can see, Apple’s looks inferior.

“Looking for 315 E 15th in Manhattan? Google Maps on DROID RAZR M will get you there & not #iLost in Brooklyn.

The real world that’s fit for your hand”

There’s no question that Apple’s Maps app comes up short compared to Google’s. Google has been doing this for 7 years, and has thousands of people on its payroll collecting data via planes, trains and automobiles. And Apple is, well, hiring.

The company released a statement last Thursday regarding the Maps criticism, saying that it’s aware that Maps is a “major initiative” and that it is “just getting started with it.” And it promised that the service will continue to get better over time.

Motorola has struggled to stay relevant in the smartphone era, albeit a few standout hits like the original Droid and the long-lasting Droid RAZR Maxx. So you can’t fault them for trying something new. And it’ll be interesting to see if it pays off.

What do you think of Motorola’s new ad?

  • ic0dex

I just searched 315 E 15th in Manhattan and I got exactly what’s on the Razer phone that Ad is BS.

I know you can’t see a lot of the building outlines and you don’t get bus gps or whatever you want to call it. I still think that it’s not a bad App for being in a BETA stage. I just can imagine what this Map App will become over time. I personally would rater have street view over fly over. Fly over is just a waste of money and resources for apple.

    • Armando Alvarez

Well I’m guessing that once apple saw that ad they fixed it

      • ic0dex

And they should. The Maps App should fix its self over time. I think it was posted on IDB when Apple replied back on the bad press. They said that the App is a cloud based App so it will learn from us in time. The more information we provided the better the Map App will become.

    • MrMarvel

Hey ic0dex, are you an idiot or what? If you type “315 e 15th st ny” in Apple’s Maps app, then you WILL get 315 Marlborough Rd, which is in Brooklyn, instead of the correct address which is in Manhattan. If you type “315 e 15th st manhattan”, then yes, you will get the correct address, but not everyone may know the city of the address they’re looking for. They might only know the street and state. I could forgive Apple if their app had the correct street in the wrong city, but the app came up with a completely different street AND the the wrong city. Apple dropped the ball on this one. They should have found a way to coexist with Google. And for the record, I’ve been an iPhone owner since the 3G. I’ve never owned an Android phone. Hey ic0dex, #uLost SMDH!

      • ic0dex

It looks like you’re an idiot like Motorola! When you search for an address you don’t put “ny” you type New York. “ny” can be a prefix to anything. I live in Los Angeles City of Sherman Oaks and when I search something in Sherman Oaks I don’t put “SO” or “LA” because I might get a miss hit and it will find an address in LOUISIANA (LA) you retard. The funny thing is Motorola wants retards like you on their side, they know you’re stupid so they get retards like you to believe everything they say. Enjoy your day and F**k off.

      • Joey_Mousepad

if you’re gonna attack someone on the internet at least vary your insults more “retard”

      • ic0dex

        Piss off you schmuck!

  • i don’t get it… Motorola and Samsung think that ads like this work but it really just makes them look extremely childish.
Not only that but them making ads like this shows everyone that they are getting desperate.
So please grow up Motorola and Samsung because the only people who agree with your crap are the people who already own your products. So who is this actually for?

    • JaeM1llz

You only think it makes them look childish because you are a fanboy. Any non-fanboy knows that these ads they have been releasing are brilliant examples of marketing.

So please, get off Apple’s nuts and lighten up.

      • I consider myself a fanboy… but they’re just ads. Being the top tier, you will always get heat – and everyone will try to compare his product with the top product.

You don’t see Galaxy S3 vs Lumia infographics, or HTC One X being the “next big thing” compared to the S3. They all compare themselves to Apple’s iPhone.

If anything, this should be flattery 🙂

      • MagicDrumSticks

Agreed with you; unfortunately there’s a shit ton of fanboys here and you will get all those thumbs down. I’ll thumbs up you though :]

      • JaeM1llz

Ya, I’m not bothered by it, I don’t expect a bunch of fanboys to see things from my point of view 😛

      • Mac_Guy

Obviously there’s a shit ton of fanboys here on iDB, all they blog about is Apple

      • Actually they are pretty childish. And yes, apple did it too with the I’m a Mac commercials. But what these companies don’t realize is they should be marketing on their strengths. Not what they perceive as others’ weaknesses. Now that’s truly brilliant advertising. The problem with that is that it takes a truly brilliant company to realize this. Which these appearantly are not. I’m not a fanboy. I have used and played with other devices. And eventhough there were certain aspects of each that I found enticing. None really impressed me enough to stop using my iPhone.

      • JaeM1llz

Richard, that is what makes their ads so brilliant. Specifically the one where the Galaxy S3 users are talking to the fanboys lining up outside Apple. The commercial both markets their strengths and knocks Apple for their weaknesses.

-“This one has 4G” … “We’ve had that for a while”
-“What did you just do” … “we shared playlists” … “by touching phones!?”
-“This one has a bigger screen” … “This one’s screen is even bigger”
-“We’re gonna need an adapter for the cable” … “Ya but Apple makes such beautiful adapters”

        etc. etc.

I am in marketing, and these commercials are a great example of effective marketing, even though the fanboys are too blinded by their love for Apple to see that.

      • the only problem is making fun of “people in line”, who are the potential costumers…

      • Who the hell wants to share playlist by touching phones? Would rather touch up the lady I am talking too, then uplink my phone to her computer in the A.M. to grab her playlist 😉

      • You really think that the above maps ad is brilliant? Or the iPhone 5 vs GS3 that Samsung purposely only listed GS3 stats? No sir these are not brilliant ads but they are the equivalent to Fox News.
PS- Maps have nothing to do with hardware so what happens to this ad when Apple fixes the problem?

    • Ahem… Mac VS PC ads, anyone?

Most companies do this, and personally I think Motorola and Samsung have been treading the line between childish and subtle pretty well. There’s nothing wrong with these ads in my opinion, it keeps competitors on their toes.

      • Could be, but Mac vs PC has some satire in it, and it never mentioned the word Microsoft, or showed any kind of Hardware or Software on their ads. I am referring to the iPhone vs Samsung spec sheet (which is missing some crucial facts).

      • JaeM1llz

These commercials never showed any hardware or mentioned Apple either(as that would be illegal). They are literally IDENTICAL to Apple’s Mac vs. PC ads.

      • Look at the advert above. It’s clearly an iPhone. Look at Samsung’s “iPhone vs Galaxy S3” spec sheet. It’s clearly an iPhone in the list.

These commercials are showing Apple’s hardware (and this one, software too). So yes, they are slightly different.

      • That is not true at all. It was targeted at microsoft and windows all the time.

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

        Although I’m a long-time PC/Windows user, I actually loved the mac-vs-pc ad campaign… Those were brilliant advertisements.

Instead, we now see, bold lies…

Someone should tell Motorola that iPhone users could press that 3D button there, at least in NY… I wonder how their device would respond.

Trying to get an edge over competition is understandable. Being stupid about it, is NOT.

      • goofygreek

Not everyone lives in NY, here in NC, where i live, that 3d button is useless. Also, google maps on an iphone4 are alot better than apple maps in ios6, on an iphone 5. The terrain mode in google maps actually shows the blocks of houses. Apples version does not. You have to switch to satellite mode on apple maps to see the houses. That make sense?

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

Man, the ad shows an address in NY…

        I’m not there either.

And, I’m old enough to remember the times, when Google first announced Maps (beta).

We’re talking about a product that’s been out for 3 days. For god’s sake, give it just some time.

Remember, much of Google Maps’ success comes from community. People corrected their maps database, iPhones and other phones corrected their roads and triangulation database.

If you take that into consideration, Apple is a bit ahead than that. Just don’t go too hasty to blame otherwise a good implementation. I’ve seen and played with their 3D imaging… It’s really nice to have, for a quick tour of the city and/or during navigation. It may have flaws, but pretty sure it’s gonna get better.

And, I for one, believe Google will publish their Maps app, as they did with Youtube.

Btw, none will ever match Tomtom or iGo for me. They are just free alternatives!

      • SoCoMagNuM

it wasnt the issue of 3D…it was the address it popped up on the map was different than the address that was being searched…thus sending you to a different location not to mention the marker is located in someones yard instead of street where cars belong.

      • goofygreek

Yea, my friend just told me today his iphone 5 tried sending him to the other side of town, to the wrong road, and to a house that didnt exist. They really need to make an update and allow people to choose which maps they want to use.

      • SoCoMagNuM

the navigation app on my galaxy 3 is a beast. hasnt faileed me yet on many trips.

    • I got my iPhone 5 today and it is really amazing. Samsung, Motorola and HTC are nothing.

      • goofygreek

You must be greek with a name like panagiotis.

      • Mitt’s Gaffes

Nothing like a bit of racism to downrank your post into oblivion.

      • goofygreek

I didnt know being greek meant being racist, But in my defense, panagiotis is a very very common name in greek. And i am greek. Hell, i have 3 cousins named panagioti.

      • maurid

Why would you call him racist? Did he offend Greek people? Hell, if you had given him the chance, you would’ve found out that he, too, is Greek (according to him).

      • goofygreek

Figured common sense would kick in and people would realize im greek by my name, but i guess not. But, yes i am greek, speak it, write and read it.

      • goofygreek

dont understand why people flag this down, but whatever.

      • Without Motorola, Samsung or HTC, your iPhone wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is today. Rather thank them instead of bashing them. Competition is good, embrace it.

      • Kok Hean

        And vice versa.

      • Exactly. And do you see me screaming all over the Internet how Apple/HTC/Samsung are “nothing”? No, thats what fanboys do and its fing annoying.

      • Kok Hean

Too many of them are on YouTube too.

      • Blake

All you do is troll! Please get on somewhere else! We dont care about your moronic comments! You are irrelevant to anyone iDownloadblog

      • SoCoMagNuM

id have to agree no doubt. they all have been victims of “stealing” ideas but seems apple is making a bigger deal out of it. hopefully in the end we the consumers are the winners cause well…without us they wouldnt be in business.

I used to speak down of android back in the day when it wasnt that developed and tuned as iOS. years later after much progression its turned out to be a nice alternative. Im enjoying it so far and cant wait to see what they have up their sleeve. Apple hasnt left my radar. They still produce good phones. In a year or 2 ill see where the market is.

      • Those wouldn’t have smartphones without Apple, they are just consequences…

      • Android was going to happen sooner or later, with or without Apple making the first move (with the iPhone), as it is evident by Google’s purchase of Android Inc. back in 2005. 🙂

      • Veronica Xu

If Apple didn’t make the first move, your almighty Android device would look like a BlackBerry clone.

      • How would your iPhone look if there weren’t for Diamond Desk (1991) or Mitsubishi? Today you would’t be pinching and zooming. If there weren’t for Android, you’d still have the same shitty notification system. Also, you wouldn’t have the lockscreen camera button, you wouldn’t be able to snap photos while recording video, you wouldn’t have do not disturb, twitter or facebook integration… And VIP inbox was a feature even back in Windows Mobile days!

      • Veronica Xu

Apple made touch screen smartphones from an illogical idea to something that every manufacturer wants to do.

      • That proves what? Absolutely nothing. What Apple did was a very good job advertising touchscreen on mobile devices. They didn’t invent it, but yet, they patented it…

        imageshack us/a/img684/353/tumblrm9xz306fzm1r04hw7.jpg

      • kozi

Too bad you were too young to remember things that happened 5 years ago (I really hope this to be your excuse).

Take a look at the market at that time, what was Android when they first show it off (after the iPhone), and a good look at the first iPhone keynote.

        (WinCE/WinMobile/Palm/and others user here)

So yeah, they definitely didn’t invent it…they just made it workable and seriously awesome.
Brands you love (and even Nokia) even tried to sell RESISTIVE screens for years surfing on Apple’s wave.

Lol, relax and get your facts straights.

      • Veronica Xu

Who said that they invented and patented it?
You can’t deny that if Apple didn’t start with the iPhone, not a lot of people would be interested in touch screen smartphones.

You must be an idiot if you think that they patented touch screen on mobile phones.

    • MagicDrumSticks

Yeah, just like how Apple started the whole “I’m a Mac” ads when they were desperate for customers? Apple does it too, you’re just a blind idiot.

      • People always take your input seriously when you end with name calling.

      • MagicDrumSticks

Yet you still felt the impulse to respond. Looks like the joke’s on you chump.

    • The people who own their products also not agree dude, (some of them)

    • Apple did the same when they launched different products….Hope you remember…

    • Osorio11

Fact is that Apple Maps are seriously flawed and if other smartphone manufacturers comment on that they have every right to do so. I for one will not update to IOS6 before the maps are as good as Google Maps. Furthermore I think it’s rAther stupid Apple did not wait for their maps to be out of what is clearly a beta stage before forcing it upon their clients.

  • The iPhone is showing a regular map view while the Droid is showing satellite view. It’s not like Apple Maps don’t have satellite view. So this really isn’t a fair comparison.

    • I agree with you but many people don’t know that.

    • Whatever the reason be. The end users must get a polished and accurate app.

  • According to Apple maps – that street is “330 e 15th ny”.

Now if you search “330 e 15th ny” on Google Maps – you will get the same street. If you search “330 e 15th ny” on Apple Maps – you will be pointed out to the same street too as the advert.

Could the 315 be wrong and misleading? Please note: I’m no Map expert here. 🙂

  • Lyndell

Maybe these guys should get busy paying out the billions that Apple has won, or will win, for them copying Apple.

  • I got my Iphone 5 yesterday and today I use apple maps and it sent me to the opposite direction. I had to use google maps on safari to get to the right place! 🙁

  • Carrier logos on phones are SO ugly.

  • Of course an Apple fanboy like Jeff will defend it, that’s so obvious. What you don’t see is, people need it now, not in the upcoming future. Yes, it will improve, but Google Maps will also improve. So right now, people are crashing to anything because of their Maps. Brava, Apple, brava. Kill the people that loves you the most, the Apple way.

  • OK OK! ! Apple is just starting its map which is why its a mess. BUT if apple’s map is not ready for the public then why release it now? They kinda forced us to use its messy map by removing google map. Don’t you guys think that apple is taking its loyal consumer for granted.
Every big company starts to fall when they start to care less about consumers and care more about making money.

  • motorola is showing hybrid, meaning satellite and map, the iphone 5 is showing just the map so obviously the motorola’s new ad sucks even though their phone doesn’t

  • Igor

Who uses built in maps? Apple or Google are both crap. Use WAZE it is truly amazing!

  • For what my opinions worth. To me it looks like apple is trying to cut out their competitor on all levels. Look at what happened with Samsung and the retina displays. Now look at whats happening to google.

    • macboy74

Malik, You do realize that Apple had a 5 year contract with google maps that had ended and thats why its not on the iPhone anymore.

      • @macboy74:disqus Apples contract with google maps terminates Q4 of 2012, apple was forking out 1 billion $ a year for google maps. Now they can spend that 1 billion $ for there own mapping solution which will get better with time

      • And why not renew it? Well all know money is no issue.

  • thedarkknight80

Well, keep up the campaigns android phones. The more people buy your phones, the more i’ll be unique with my black iphone 5, aka the fastest mobile gadget on the planet.

Regardless, i think Apple should sue for this one , because new potential customers who are not familiar with the iphone OS , would seriously think that the iphone does not have satellite view, while it actually does !

  • stupids…. u just need to activate satellite

    samsung is the real shit

  • What was google maps like when it first came out.. if I remember that wasn’t spot on ether …

  • LOL just go use some professional Navigation apps like TomTom or Sygic. And not stupid default installed ‘navigator or maps shit’.

  • I don’t remember seeing lines for a Motorola phone or Samsung phone (aka they suck)

  • People say these types of ads are immature and childish; but I guess they’ve never seen or heard a political campaign ad. Yet those are “alright”. Get over yourself.

  • charlie

$800 only for beta apps siri and maps??hmm i think apple fan boys is….you know hahaha

    • Would rather pay 800 for an amazingly built device than 800 for piece of shit plastic. dipshit.

      • charlie

even a plastic, but superior than iphone5 c’mon, how about the hardware??you’re not blind man, stop pretending

  • Haters will always hate, but we all know who’s shares are worth $700 + right now. Keep trying children.

  • jonathan

my issue with the ad is that google is in satelite form and aples isnt so obviously it looks better

  • >mfw when an Android fanboy pops up in the comments

  • The fact of the matter is that the Galaxy S3 is still more powerful than the iPhone 5, the new maps app for iPhone blows, and I love watching all you iFags argue over defective software for a phone that takes away all the freedom to do what you want with it. Apple ruined Siri, even Tim Cook said he was disappointed in it, they ruined their maps app, and if you think Apple is anything but a bunch of crybaby, lawsuit loving tools, then you’re probably an iPhone owner with blinders on your eyes. Internet nerds… prepare to go insane and flame in 3…2…
