If you’re a new iPhone adopter in the U.S., chances are you’re on the limited 2GB data plan. To keep track of your data usage, you have two options: Navigate to Settings > General > Usage, OR log into your AT&T account via the MyWireless app or online. Neither option is quick or easy.

This simple add-on for jailbroken iPhones changes that. The Data Usage SBSettings tweak adds a toggle to your SBSettings menu that lets you see your total upload, download, and combined data usage. So now you can get quick and easy access to your monthly data usage (provided you’re manually resetting the counter every month)…

Yes, AT&T is kind enough to give you a warning when you’re nearing your limits, but this is still a handy tweak if you’re curious as to how much a certain app may be eating up your data. Just remember to heed the warning that current/active data usage isn’t included in the count. But there’s an easy on/off switch for data already built in to your SBSettings! Tap that first, then check your data usage.

(By the way, if you like the SBSettings “Serious Theme” used in these screenshots, you can check it out here.)

Is this a useful tweak for you? Do you obsessively check your data usage? Any problems staying under the 2GB cap? Sound off below!

  • You can also use DataMan, an approved app available in AppStore. DataMan monitors your data usage in real time. No jailbreaking required.

This useful app monitors your cellular and Wi-Fi data usage in the background, keeping a log of your activities. What’s more, it geotags your data activities. To help manage your data consumption, you’ll receive real-time alerts when you exceed your usage thresholds. There are 4 levels of alert thresholds that you can customize to your needs to prevent additional charges to your bill. You can find DataMan in the App Store.

    • I’ve use Dataman and it’s brilliant, give a much more detail view of your data usage And even alerts you when close to your data allowance.

  • I must admit, I ‘obsessively’ check my data usage. I just hate having to login to MyWireless app and click about 1,000 times before I can actually see my data usage. I dont have a cap of data I can use, but I like knowing how much I’ve used and how much AT&T wishes they can remove my unlimited plan lol

This add-on is reporting something very different from what AT&T is reporting for my cellular data usage.

Unless I am missing something, this looks like it is just reporting what appears in the Settings > General > Usage screen. This amount includes both cellular and wi-fi data even though it is labeled as Cellular Network Data.

I average over 15GB/month, so to all those stuck on caps…=P

The thing I don’t like about this toggle is for the latest information, you need to end your current data connection, so either doing a quick re-spring or toggling off data and turning back on to get the latest data session in the calculation.

Thanks Mat, will keep it in mind for when I get a second phone with a limited plan. Don’t see a need for it since I’m on unlimited right now

For some reason this does not show up as a toggle for me (iPhone 3GS, 3.1.2)…
    Then again –
I’ve had some troubles with SBSettings after downgrading to 3.1.2…
My SSH toggle isn’t showing up either :-/…
    Anyone having the same troubles?

  • Gringo

    Same problem on a 3GS 3.1.3 🙁 Anyone having a solution ?

  • Osteon77

Might just be me. But am I correct in saying that there is no toggle for airplane mode in sbs settings? That would be handy.

  • Just pointing out that, while some may use certain functions and apps while on the go more than others, and in areas where wifi doesn’t exist, that the data usage limit IS only while you’re on Edge or 3g. Wifi, doesn’t. But i can still see how a limit can be reached for a prolific user (such as me and my gf).

That being said, we were quite lucky being grandfathered in when our cell company was bought by AT&T. We got our iphones and kept our old plan, which INCLUDED unlimited data. Yep, UNLIMITED…

im still getting this though; i like seeing numbers increase, lol

    @Osteon77:

The “Phone”-toggle (standard toggle in SBSettings) does that…
Turn it off to send your phone into airplane mode…

I love the data usage toggle and I love the theme…:)

  • I have the newest edition of the data usage toggle, which comes with the cellular data plan settings in iPhone settings, which supposedly if registered, allows you to automatically reset the statistics each month on your rollover day. However, mine does not reset. Am I doing something wrong?
