Windows Live HotmailDo you want to get Exchange ActiveSync for Hotmail on your iPhone? There’s not an app for that, but there  is a way to do it manually… Now I don’t know who in the world still uses Hotmail besides my Mom but I figured this info might be useful to someone, which is why I’m posting it.

Setting up Exchange for Hotmail on your iPhone will allow you to keep your contacts, emails, and calendars wirelessly synced between your iPhone and the cloud.

According to LiveSide, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support has not been officially launched but it does work for certain people.

How to install Hotmail via MicroSoft Exchange on the iPhone:

Step 1: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > and create a  new Micorsoft Exchange account.

Step 2: Enter the following information:

Server address:
SSL: enabled
Password: password
Domain: <blank>

Step 3: Go to your and you should see your new Hotmail Exchange account.

As I said above, it doesn’t work for everyone. It didn’t work for me but it did work for a friend of mine. It’s kind of a hit or miss. The good news is that Microsoft said Hotmail will support Exchange later this year.

Let us know if it works for you.

  • Fred

It worked yesterday and all the night but since this morning it is not working anymore. look like microsoft stop the acces to the server.

Does it still work for someone tonight ?

  • Fred

i forgot to say that i am in France and i use a account

  • Dranon

Curious as to why you think no one uses hotmail? I have been using it for many many years. It works great! I can access my email from any computer no matter where I am. What email program do YOU think people have switched to? I also have a gmail account but I much prefer the hotmail interface!

    • @Dranon

Like you I like the interface of hotmail much better but being an email power user, I had to make the switch to Gmail over a year ago.
Hotmail is slow, filled with annoying ads, doesn’t support push/IMAP off the box. The search feature is terrible, and it is painfully slow (oops, I already said that). I understand it’s good for “casual” users. But for people like me who spend hours on email, it’s clearly not the right solution. To each his own, right? I’m glad Hotmail works for you. I was just teasing a bit in the article 😉

      • Zach

LOL at the “Email Power User” comment. 🙂

I agree Gmail has a horrible interface but I don’t understand the slow reference. Hotmail has always been fast for me, search works quickly, etc. – not to mention, hotmail does support push now. I love having my calendars, email, and folders all in sync. Let me tell you there is nothing better than a free Exchange email account.

      • How and where do i get thefree exchsnge email account? I’m tryin to access eiher my hotmail or the gmail account thru the low budget tablet I have. DO YOU HAVE or know where I can get configuration info from? I’d really appreciate it. Facebook (facebook/aalr) me or reply here nd I’ll gt i here. Thanks or any and all iinsstruction/help that you can provide. Thanks in advance

  • jorgeluis500

I agree with the last comment of Sebastien. The biggest disadvantage for me is the lack of IMAP features.
By the way, I tried to set it up as an exchange account and it failed. I used AddExchange from Cydia and the settings mentioned here on a 2G iPhone with 3.1.3 FW. Guess it was a “miss” from the “hit and miss”.

I have hotmail and have used it on my iPhone from day one …. the thing I don’t like is that I can not see my folders only inbox, junk and trash all others are not there. I am thinking about switching to gmail for this reason. Are there any fixes for this?

    • Krash

well i’ve started using PUSH with hotmail on my iphone 4 iOS4.2 and it works really well.. i get all my folders and sent and deleted items + i can move items into folders from my inbox on the phone itself
not jailbroken and using the native mail app… so yeah works for me
it didn’t in the beginning but i fixed it
just goto>mail etc> ms exchange> add everything leave domain empty and ur Username should be ur full email i.d.> it will after verifying ask for a server>> it would seem to work fine and u can do ur settings or wtv then send urself a test mail.. mostly won’t work (if it does gr8 but read the next step) then go back to the ms exchange setting ur account and u’ll see SSL enabled > disable it> enable again> click done> all that other stuff> one more test > should work well > should keep woking well

  • william

I don’t understand: “Goto Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > and create a new Micorsoft Exchange account.”

Are saying goto mail, add account then click on exchange. it does not come up with the options you list.

  • william

    ok i found it:

click next and wait a few minutes then it come up with next page.

I was excited to get an email from the Hotmail team listing their new features…I knew Hotmail Exchange support was suppose to be one of the upcoming features, but it didn’t mention it in that email, I figured I’d give it a try anyway…it worked for a couple of days then it just stopped. I don’t know if they just figured out people found a way in and decided to shut the door or what, but I would really like it back. I’ve had my Hotmail account for over 12 years now and it’s the one email that all my friends and family knows I still use.

  • So I get through the whole process then after I am out of the settings it says that paswword for the exchange account “exchange” is wrong. Then when I go to the mail it says connection to the server failed. Oh well. Hopefully soon it will work. BTW I have hotmail.

  • Ricardo Gzz

    So di I.

This is once of the most wanted features on hotmail.

    Thanks everyone!

  • until this is up and working windows messenger for the iphone takes to you to the mail. It’s not as nice as the mail app but for the 2 seconds i have to wait for it to load it saves me time deleting messages from 2 places.

  • tlohlihp

Following the steps on here i got this email…

To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device.

We are really glad that you’re interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones.

We’re making constant improvements and we should be accepting new requests fairly soon. Please check the following website in about two weeks to see what’s happening:

Thanks again for using Hotmail–we’re really sorry about this delay.

    The Hotmail Team

Just thought id let everyone know

  • GarethDPhillips

This launches tomorrow (Monday 30th). Ive had it working for a few weeks, and generally speaking its all good. Calendar and contacts sync instantly which is great (and as expected) but push email notifications are a little hit-and-miss. Some new emails “ping” to the iPhone, but some dont. If I go into the Inbox to force a refresh, then they appear.

After the official launch tomorrow I’m hoping this unreliability goes away.

  • tlohlihp glad it’s working for you.
I tried to set it up again the other day and then I got this email from hotmail:

    Hello SHILOH ,

I tried it again today but it didn’t work. Word on the street is that tomorrow it should work. Let’s hope so.

  • Jajjii

It setup on my phone but when I go to inbox, it is asking me for my password over and over again. Maybe they will enable it tomorrow:)

  • It looks like it’s working now.

  • limberg

  • Jajjii

Yep it sure is working, mail server is

  • Gazza

It was not working for me ( UNTIL TODAY (8th September 2010). So it is obviously being phased in across accounts. So if it has not worked for you – keep trying!

  • claireb707

its working for me – hurrah!

  • RaybloOd

working for me!! it didnt before but now it does!!

  • Hips

I tried it, the “” stayed the same, but it changed the username.the requires a password, but it’s not accepting the original one I used to set up the account.that’s not normal is it?

  • Ev

Yes it worked and so easey to do Thank you

  • sunny

yes it works excellent thank you

  • sunny

its keeps saying connection to the server failed 🙁 it was working for me earlier even all the folders have disappeared. Someone help me?

  • Dayo

Worked perfectly. Thanks so much for this tip!!! I was so excited to finally see Hotmail behaving like its peers on iPhone – I could see my calendars, sync folders and work in email the way it is supposed to work! OFFICE MAC 2011 is another story. Wonder why Microsoft would release a product that doesn’t even support its own Hotmail product! Go figure!

  • guddu

Thanks for the tips, it worked perfectly. Regards

  • Paul

Does anyone know how to set up a windows live account in iCal? I’m using the Exchange 2007 option but when it gets to the SERVER ADDRESS I input and then iCal claims the exchange “server” is not responding. HELP someone, HELP anyone.

  • To use hotmail or a live account with exchange you use windows live connector.

  • Paul

Thanks Shiloh but no go, it’s an exe file, i’m using an iMac.

  • Iphonerrr

Thank u soooo much it work I did it twice waited a min and it worked no more faxing

  • Steevu

Like Zach I also found the power user comment funny, especially as it was followed up by ‘so I had to make the switch to gmail’, not sure there’s an awful lot of features in gmail that a power user would need. Not unless you think imap is a power user tool in which case you really need to stop thinking of yourself as an email power user, that term is reserved for people with their own excgange servers set up in their attic I think :p

  • jimmy

it z work thanks brother 😀

  • Enrique

funcionó perfecto con mi Iphone 4

  • Vincenzo

The email account works fine, but i cant see the folders (sent, drafts, and others). Is there a way to be able to visualize the folders??

  • Light

It does not work for me.
The settings things was all ok. But when I go to the Mail app, it does not download new mails to my iOS 4.2 iPod touch. On the Accounts section I go to Exchange, there is only the Inbox folder, I go to it, it says “Check for Mail…” for less than 1sec and nothing happens. There is no mails in the Inbox folder. I am still able to send new mails but I cannot see any mails. I tried rebooting, I tried turning SSL off and on but still it doesn’t work.
Does anyone have any solutions for that ?

  • Ricardo

hmmm… it must download your emails. I found this two pages regarding exchange configuration for GMail & Hotmail, I always use this settings and it worked!

    Hope it Helps

  • Light

Thanks for the sites but still it does not work. I am very confused. And desperate also.

  • Albert

Seems to be working. Thank you!!!

  • i can’t configure my official mail ID with Microsoft Exchange in my iPhone, if any body advice, how can i do it ??
