Update

Will You Upgrade Your iPhone to 4.0.2?

As Sebastien reported just a bit ago, Apple released software update 4.0.2. This "update" is said to have addressed to the PDF exploit that the Dev Team discovered, thus allowing JailbreakMe to function with ease. For those of you who aren't jailbroken (which includes me), do you really plan to update this time?

It would have been nice of Apple to include the various features such as Game Center in this round, but perhaps the Beta isn't quite perfected to release to the masses. It's clear that this update was specifically aimed to prevent JailbreakMe from enticing those who buy their phone from today on. I bet the Dev's get all fuzzy inside when Apple directly implements fixes aimed at their work. I give credit to them (devs), as they do work hard on these jailbreaks.

I think I will be sitting this update out. It may even have a counterproductive effect on me. Now that the hole is patched, I just may jailbreak for the heck of it. How about you? Will you update this go around, or wait for a real update? Let us know in the comments below.

iOS 4.0.2 is Out. Jailbreakers Beware

iOS 4.0.2 is out and available for download. As expected, this update fixes the security hole that was uncovered by JailbreakMe. If you rely on your jailbreak/unlock, you should not update until a new jailbreak has been found.

Pandora Update Includes Retina Display for iPhone

For those of you who are like myself in the regard of not checking the App Store daily, the streaming sensation Pandora has updated its iPhone app.

The largest feature implemented is the support for Retina Display. It does look nice.

What's New In This Version:

uses high resolution graphics for iPhone 4 yields control of external volume buttons when backgrounded and paused improves detection and notification of device audio failures fixes several crashes improves album art loading other minor bug fixes and improvements

I thought my usage of Pandora would greatly increase with the background capabilities, but I was mistaken. Perhaps it's the lack of 3G in my area, which makes it's functionality nearly unusable. Nevertheless, the update makes it look cleaner on my home-screen.

How often do you use Pandora?

Apple Has Already Developed A Fix for the PDF Exploit

An Apple spokeperson told CNET they are well aware of the security exploit found in iOS and they are apparently already working on it:

We're aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.

This security glitch found in the way iOS handles PDF documents allowed the Dev Team to create JailbreakMe, which uses this exploit to inject the jailbreak code in your iPhone. Some security experts were quick to realize that this exploit could be used to inject malicious softwares in your iDevices and brought up this issue to the general public. The jailbreak community quickly developed a fix for it which can be downloaded directly from Cydia.

This morning I highlighted the irony of the situation. Apple has always claimed jailbreaking can put your iPhone at risk but it proved to be the other way around as so far, your iPhone is more secured once it is jailbroken and the exploit has been patched.

We don't know when Apple will release this software update, which will most likely come with 4.1. Apple usually isn't quick to fix things up so if I had a guess I'd say we won't see this update until the end of the month.

Reminder: Do Not Update Your iPhone or iPad If You’re Planning to Jailbreak/Unlock

As many of you may already know, Apple just released iOS 4.0.1, a software update for the iPhone that will supposedly fix the antenna issue. Apple also released iOS 3.2.1 for iPad, which fixes a few bugs.

If you are currently or plan to be on a jailbroken iPhone or iPad and want to keep your jailbreak, make sure you do not update until further notice. Hopefully, it won't be too long until the Dev Team releases a jailbreak for the latest firmware.

While updating your device to the lastest iOS is not a dramatic error, it might prevent you from jailbreaking it in the future. This particularly applies to anyone who relies on an unlock.

My advice to you: don't update, sit back, wait, and check back here later for up-to-date jailbreak information.

If you do not care about jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone, then you can obviously update your device without any worry.

Apple Releases iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone and iOS 3.2.1 for iPad. Jailbreakers Beware!

Apple just released iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G. This software update is said to fix the antenna issue which is supposedly related to a bad math formula regarding the the display of the iPhone's service signal bars.

At the same time, Apple also updated iOS 3.2.1 for iPad.

As always when a new firmware comes out, it is highly recommended you DO NOT update if you rely on a jailbreak or unlock. Updating your device might prevent you from jailbreaking or unlocking it in the future.

You can download the new firmwares from our iPhone downloads section.

When Will the Next iOS 4 Update Come Out?

Following the antenna issue fiasco, Apple issued an official statement in which it said it would release an update to iOS 4 "within a few weeks". What does a few weeks mean? 2? 3? 10? No one knows for sure.

We can still try to figure out when this update might come out by looking at the past updates of iPhone OS 1, 2, and 3. That's what tiPb did and here is what they found out:

Neither iOS 1.0 nor 2.0 nor 3.0 were bug-free and while it’s easy to forget, users were clamoring for fixes almost as much in years past as they are now. That said, iOS (iPhone) 3.0.1 was released July 31, 2009. 2.0.1 was August 4, 2008. 1.0.1 was was July 31, 2007.

Looking at this past update pattern, one might assume that iOS 54 will get an update in the next 3-4 weeks, however, Apple might be delaying this update in order to work on patching the holes of the exploit found by the Dev Team and Comex. That's what I, and many others think anyways. Time only will tell.

When do you think iOS 4 will be updated?

Dev Team Updates PwnageTool 4.01 Jailbreak for iOS 4

The Dev Team just updated PwnageTool to version 4.01. With the release of PwnageTool yesterday, many people encountered issues with iBooks. This latest update of the PwnageTool jailbreak for iOS 4 fixes these issues with iBooks.

The instructions to jailbreak your iPhone with PwnageTool are still the same. You can download the latest update of PwnageTool in our downloads section.

iOS 4 Now Available for Download

The long-expected iOS 4 is now out and available for download. Depending on where you are in the world, it might not be available in iTunes yet. For those of you who can't update via iTunes, here are the direct download links (also available in our iPhone downloads section):

iPod Touch 2G iPod Touch 3G iPhone 3G iPhone 3GS iPhone 4

Before upgrading to iOS 4, make sure you weight the pros and cons of iOS 4, but most importantly, make sure your iPhone is ready for iOS 4. As usual when a new firmware comes out, jailbreakers should beware.

Jailbreakers Should Stay Away From iOS 4 for the Time Being

iOS 4 is supposed to ship out sometimes today. This new iPhone OS will bring many new features to the iPhone, including multitasking, folders, and more.

Although the Dev Team has confirmed that a jailbreak and an unlock will be released for iOS 4, it is safe to hold off on the update for a few days if you really rely on your jailbreak/unlock.

iOS 4 will be compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. Not all features will be compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

iTunes 9.2 is Out. Jailbreakers Beware!

Apple just released iTunes 9.2, which comes with a few new features necessary before next week's release of iOS 4 to ensure compatibility between this firmware and the devices.

iTunes 9.2 features and improvements include:

Sync with iPhone 4 to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on-the-go Sync and read books with iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 and iBooks 1.1 Organize and sync PDF documents as books. Read PDFs with iBooks 1.1 on iPad and any iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 Organize your apps on your iOS 4 home screens into folders using iTunes Faster back-ups while syncing an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 Album artwork improvements make artwork appear more quickly when exploring your library

Jailbreakers and people who plan to jailbreak their iPhones or iPads should stay away from iTunes 9.2 for the time being.

According to the Dev Team, Don't install today's iTunes 9.2 if you plan on using Spirit for fresh JB (but it's fine for PwnageTool & redsn0w users).

If your iPad has already been jailbroken with Spirit, then everything will work fine. If however you plan on jailbreaking your iPad with Spirit, it will be caught in a boot loop.
