Spirit Jailbreak Update Fixes Windows Error and Photo Deletion Bug

The very few of you who were having problems with Spirit on Windows can rejoice. Spirit, which would sometimes give you an error code c0000005 depending on what version of Windows you were using, has been updated to fix this error.

I personally didn't have any problem with the Spirit jailbreak on Windows. One problem I had though is that it deleted the camera roll on my iPad. Well, Comex also fixed this bug so it shouldn't delete pictures anymore.

This is the update Comex posted on his site:

I've updated the jailbreak tool. It no longer deletes photos (sorry!) and should resolve the issue with error code c0000005. (If you still get that error with the new version, try setting compatibility mode to Windows 95.)

You can download Spirit for Windows or Mac from here. It's the most simple jailbreak ever but if you need directions on how to use it, see my Spirit tutorial.

Cydia Update Makes It A Little Less Slow

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about why Cydia sucks and how it could be improved. Maybe Saurik heard me because he decided to give Cydia a small update that aims at making it faster.

This update supposedly speeds up the loading time and improves the error checking when refreshing the sources.

I installed the update but unfortunately, I didn't see much improvement in speed. Hopefully, you'll get better luck than I did...

Have you installed the update yet? Does it feel like Cydia is faster?

iPhone OS 3.1.3 is Out. Jailbreakers Beware!

Apple released iPhone OS 3.1.3 just a few hours ago and it it is now available for download directly from iTunes or from our iPhone downloads page.

This is a very minor update, and to be honest, it's almost deceiving. If I had to give my opinion on this, I'd say that Apple released firmware 3.1.3 just to piss off the Dev Team, who released RedSn0w 3.1.2 jailbreak just days ago.

The "fixes and improvements" for iPhone OS 3.1.3 are as follow:

improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS resolves issue where 3rd party apps would not launch in some instances fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard

Additionally, Apple has updated the baseband from version 5.11.07 to 5.12.01 on the iPhone.

As usual when a new firmware update is released, it is recommended for jailbreakers and unlockers alike not to update their device. If you update to 3.1.3, you will lose your jailbreak and/or unlock.

More info will follow as it comes. For up-to-date news about jailbreaking, make sure to read our iPhone jailbreak section.

UltraSn0w iPhone Unlock Updated to Fix Missing Carrier Logo

The Dev Team updated UltraSn0w from 0.91 to 0.92 to fix the missing carrier logo. Those of you who unlocked using PwnageTool + UltraSn0w noticed the disappearance of the carrier logo. While this was just an "aesthetic bug", the core functionality of UltraSn0w (the unlock) was not altered in any way.

A short update was given on the Dev Team blog earlier today:

Today we released an ultrasn0w update that fixes an issue for those running firmware 3.1.2 with the 04.26 baseband.  That specific combination resulted in a missing carrier name in the upper left-hand corner of your home screen.  Today’s ultrasn0w update from 0.91 to 0.92 fixes that problem (which was an important issue for roaming). You should see the update available if you have http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com as a Cydia source.  Enjoy!

According to AIS, the carrier logo has been fixed for the following countries: USA, Thailand, Austria, Trinidad, Germany, China, Kuwait, Serbia, Poland, France, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Ireland, UK, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland, Malaysia, Hungary, The Netherlands, Bahamas, Jamaica, India, Israel, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, Denmark, Costa Rica, Italy, Chile and Argentina.

MuscleNerd confirmed that iTunes 9.0.2 won't interfere with your jailbreak and/or unlock.

iPhone OS 3.1.2 is Out. Jailbreakers Beware!

Not even a month after 3.1 was released, Apple has just released an update to the iPhone OS firmware  by upgrading it to 3.1.2.

According to TUAW (see image above):

This update fixes the widely reported issue where the iPhone would not wake from sleep, and also fixes an issue involving video playback and cellular service. This update is available for the original iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, and the iPod touch.

As usual when there is a firmware update, jailbreakers and unlockers should stay away from it!

Damn you, Apple! GeoHot was very close to releasing his new BlackRa1n jailbreak for iPhone and iPod Touch. I guess GeoHot will be back to the drawing board.

More info will be added to the site as we learn more about this situation.

Everything You Need to Know About iPhone OS 3.1

As I predicted, Apple unveiled today iPhone OS 3.1, and you know what? There is not much to it! It seems to me all this event was actually kinda disappointing but that's what happens when you expect too much...

If you're a jailbreaker, do not update your iPhone to 3.1 as it will wipe out everything and worst of all, you may not be able to jailbreak or unlock in the future.

Apple also announced the release of iTunes 9 and it is nice to notice that it is safe to update iTunes to 9.0. It won't affect jailbreakers or unlockers in any way.

Now if you used the tethering hack to tether your iPhone for free, you may not want to update your iPhone to 3.1 as we've seen mixed results. Some people report that the tethering hack is working fine after updating to 3.1. Some other report that it breaks the hack. Let's wait and see.

Here is the list of features that come with iPhone OS 3.1:

Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos iTunes U content organization Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll Option to Save as new clip when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on Remotely lock iPhone with passcode via MobileMe Use Voice COntrol on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets Paste phone numbers into the keypad Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing) Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

As you can see, there is no word about battery improvement. I guess Apple didn't deem consider this as an issue.

All the 3.1 firmwares as well as iTunes 9 are available from our downloads page.

Needless to say that there is no jailbreak yet for iPhone 3.1. I will keep you updated and write tutorials on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1 as it becomes available.

If you have noticed anything new in 3.1, please feel free to report it by leaving a comment below.

iPhone OS 3.1 Available Today. Jailbreakers Should Not Update

Looks like I was right when I said that Apple would unveil the new 3.1 software today. It was unfair as I knew it from a pretty reliable source, if you know what I mean. So 3.1 will be available for download later today from iTunes.

As usual in such events, jailbreakers and unlockers should not update right away. Let me repeat to be clear to everyone. If your iPhone is jailbroken, you should not update to OS 3.1. Doing so will just wipe out your jailbreak and may make it impossible to jailbreak or unlock in the future.

I suggest you wait a bit. The Dev Team is going to get a hold of 3.1 and figure out if it's safe to update or not. Either way, I will let you know as soon as we know more about it.

iPhone 3GS Jailbreak PurpleRa1n Gets An Update

GeoHot, the hacker behind the first iPhone 3GS jailbreak, posted the RC2 version of PurpleRa1n. When it first came out yesterday, PurpleRa1n only supported Windows XP SP2 32 Bit. It's now been updated and along with other improvements, it supports Vista and Windows 7.

Vista, Windows 7, International, 64-bit support Less flakiness in the payload Cydia tar cleaned up Improved logging with slightly more useful errors New kernel patches, codesign errors gone. Props posixninja Added vm_map +x, passed vm_check No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik's court :-) Still in beta, use caution

As you can see, WinterBoard still won't work but there is some major improvements. You may download PurpleRa1n from our iPhone downloads page (read PurpleRa1n tutorial). Use at your own risks though...

iPhone 3.0 Jailbreak Update

The Dev Team posted an update regarding the iPhone 3.0 jailbreak. It seems the jailbreak is harder than they expected, but there's nothing too hard for our favorite team of iPhone hackers.

We have two issues that we’ve been trying to resolve:

There are new 3.0 complications with YouTube.app if you’re on a hacktivated (unofficially activated) device There’s a bug in Apple’s new version of asr that our custom IPSW’s are tickling and causing crashes on, on some devices.  (For the nerdy or curious among us, the details of that bug were tweeted by planetbeing a month ago.)

As of Thursday morning we now have a workaround for #2.  For #1, we’ll try our best to get it fixed but we may end up releasing a preliminary jailbreak in which YouTube doesn’t work for hacktivated devices, and then follow that up with a more complete jailbreak when we can.

As a reminder, this jailbreak is necessary to inject UltraSn0w, the payload that will allow you to unlock your iPhone.

iTunes 8.2 Is Out – Jailbreakers Do Not Update

iTunes 8.2 is available since yesterday. According to the update notes, "iTunes 8.2 now supports iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 Software Update. iTunes 8.2 also includes many accessibility improvements and bug fixes."

As always when an update comes out, I highly suggest jailbreakers and unlockers do not update iTunes yet. According to the Dev Team:

This update is one of those that incidentally breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool.  It doesn’t seem like an anti-jailbreak.  But nonetheless, it will break your ability to re-run QuickPwn or PwnageTool’s dfu-entry.

Because this update isn’t a deliberate anti-jailbreak measure, it’s easily fixed in our tools.  But we really don’t want to update our tools until 3.0 is out, so please don’t update to 8.2 if you think you’ll need to rejailbreak your device. :)

iPhone Download Blog reader VistaUser also warned me that iPhoneBrowser doesn't work anymore after updating iTunes to 8.2.
