Update

iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Available. Jailbreakers, DO NOT Update!

Apple just released firmware 2.2.1 and as usual, if you are on a jailbroken iPhone, do NOT update!

According to MacRumors:

iPhone Firmware 2.2.1 Update

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

Improved general stability of Safari Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

Products compatible with this software update:

iPhone iPhone 3G

The baseband has been updated too (Modem Firmware: 02.30.03) so again, do not update your iPhone if you are jailbroken/unlocked.

Apparently, there is no major features added to this update. I will keep you posted as the news come.

As usual, you can download the latest firmwares for all iPhones and iPod Touch in the iPhone downloads section.

Thanks @dannyswrld for the tip and for this update on what's up with 2.2.1:

Faster and snappier! Less crashy. All Safari bugs I know of have been fixed. RAM is definitely better. Apps don't eat it up as much as before. Bug fixed where saved images were pixelated and blurry. Bug fixed where when you turned on an app on a flat surface the accelerometer would turn off. Emoji's still work.

Leave a comment about what you think is new in this firmware.

Downgrade iPhone Firmware 2.2 to 2.1

Firmware update 2.2 surprised a few people who accidentally updated their iPhone. If that happened to you, you now have 2 choices: either stay and 2.2 and wait for the Dev Team to come up with a jailbreak method for 2.2, or you can try to downgrade from 2.2 to 2.1.

I personally don't have this issue. I haven't updated to 2.2 but I figured that some of you guys may have, so I started looking for a solution to post here. The problem is there doesn't seem to be a solution that works for one main reason: 2.2 updates your baseband and once your baseband is updated, you can't downgrade it to 2.1 (not as yet anyway).

From what I read, only 2-3 people were actually able to get their iPhone back to 2.1 without issues but it is very unclear what they did exactly... Now let's have a look at these different methods that supposedly show you how to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2 to 2.1.

iPhone 2.2 Jailbreak

Update: The Dev Team cracked the code again and you can now jailbreak your iPhone 2.2 firmware. I highly recommend you read this before doing anything!

Update 2: I wrote new tutorials on how to jailbreak or unlock your iPhone 2.2 firmware using QuickPwn:

jailbreak iPhone 2.2 unlock iPhone 2.2

Like I mentioned in my previous post, there is no jailbreak available so far for iPhone firmware 2.2. The Dev Team is working on it and from what I understand, it shouldn't take too long...

We believe that our Pwnage technique (and therefore the Jailbreak) isn’t affected, but PwnageTool and QuickPwn do not support this release as yet, so DO NOT install 2.2 using iTunes as you will lose your jailbreak.

It's also worth noting that if you're on a jailbroken iPhone, you really don't want to update using iTunes yet as it may modify your baseband and make future jailbreak and/or unlock impossible.

I suspect that it will take a few days to the Dev Team to update PwnageTool to allow it to jailbreak your iPhone firmware 2.2, so please hang on... Once PwnageTool is released, other methods including WinPwn, and QuickPwn will be following.

We will let you know as soon as PwnageTool, WinPwn, and QuickPwn are available, and we will also release our tutorials on how to use them. You may want to subscribe to our RSS feeds (if not done yet) to keep in touch and be notified as soon as the news fall.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 is Out. Jailbreakers Should Not Update!

The rumor was right... Apple did release firmware 2.2 last night and for once, it seems that we have some useful features added:

Enhancements to Maps:

Google Street View public transit and walking directions display address of dropped pins share location via email

Enhancements to Mail

resolve isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email improved formatting of wide HTML email

Other Enhancements

Improved stability and performance of Safari Podcasts are now available for download in the iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular networks) Decrease in call set-up failures and call drops Improved sound quality of visual voicemail messages Pressing the Home button from any Home screen takes you the first Home screen Preference to turn on/off keyboard auto-correction

Apparently, iPod Touch users don't get the Google Maps upgrade that includes the addition of Street View as well as public transit and walking directions.

Like they did earlier this week, the Dev Team warns us about updating the iPhone using iTunes.

So, as anticipated our friends the misfits have recently released the long awaited 2.2 update. We can confirm that this update SHOULD NOT be applied using iTunes if you want the chance of a soft-unlock in the near future.

If you want to keep that option of a ‘soft-unlock in the near future’ available but you want the new features of 2.2, you will be able to update to 2.2 using a PwnageTool created custom ipsw file that disables the baseband update. You will be able to do this using an updated version of PwnageTool that will be released sometime soon.

Some facts -

The 2.2 firmware for 3G contains a baseband update for the 3G iPhone The 2.2 firmware for 2G (1st gen iPhones) doesn’t contain a baseband update and the baseband is still at 04.05.04 We believe that our Pwnage technique (and therefore the Jailbreak) isn’t affected, but PwnageTool and QuickPwn do not support this release as yet, so DO NOT install 2.2 using iTunes as you will lose your jailbreak If you apply this update and you previously relied on PwnageTool or QuickPwn to activate your phone, it may become temporarily deactivated and unusable (until we release the new version of PwnageTool or QuickPwn). PwnageTool and QuickPwn updates will be released as soon as possible that will allow a safe update path to 2.2 the release of these updates is inevitable but not imminent, we are creating the modifications right now and we need to put the new software through the usual testing process. If you apply this update and you have third-party (non AppStore) applications  that you rely on they will stop working. 2G (1st gen) iPhone users who cannot wait for the new PwnageTool or QuickPwn can safely “Update” to 2.2 using iTunes, this will preserve the existing activation. However “restoring” to 2.2 using iTunes will return the iPhone to the unactivated state. If you are in any doubt just wait. NB: This works for 2G ONLY. The use of SIM-Proxies (small circuit boards/chips that sit underneath the SIM card) to provide GSM/UMTS service on your locked iPhone 3G is a method that we have always advised against. Early reports suggest that the 2.2 update disables the functionality of these devices. The techniques used were always unreliable and we are surprised that they have lasted this long. We are not working on the 2nd generation iPod touch at the moment, so we cannot comment on what the the 2.2 software update may do to this specific model

So, as always, if you are in any doubt whatsoever please delay the install of this firmware on any of your devices until we have investigated the release in more detail. Watch this space ;-)

Also, iTunes 8.0.2 is out now. I doubt this will make much difference either way, but ask yourself, why bother. Just because a new version is out doesn’t mean you want it. I would hold off on this also.

iPhone Firmware 2.2 and iTunes 8.0.2 are both available from the downloads section of our blog.

Installer 4.0b9 update

The RIP Dev Team posted today on their blog about new updates they brought to Installer. Here is what you can find in the new package:

Added user-driven ratings. We encourage you to submit your votes for various packages. Once more data will be collected (in a few days), that will be reflected on the Featured page. SpringBoard is no longer terminated after the software was installed or removed. Proxies are (again) supported. The support was broken after we moved to libcurl. Introduced download timeouts (again) that were disabled after the move to libcurl. Reworked many parts of the engine in an effort to get rid of the occasional GUI stalls. If a particular source fails to update, it will be moved to "disabled" state for 6 hours and will not be included in the all sources refresh process. The disabled state is listed as the source icon with a red "stop" sign over it. This is done to prevent unnecessary stalls at the sources refresh if one of the sources goes offline for whatever reason. If you'd like to retry it before 12 hour interval, open its info and hit Refresh button there. Removed custom Info support as it was mostly used for unnecessary ads that were disturbing many people. These pages are normally reachable from the "More Info" link. Much better error reporting. Forget these "error 3"s and such. The descriptions are much more human readable now. And for script errors, it will show an actual script command that caused an error. Installer will prevent iPhone/iPod touch from sleeping when it's downloading or installing something. The app icon badge should behave better now. Lots of smaller fixes and optimizations I won't list.

With the popularity of Cydia, I really wonder if there is still room for Installer. I guess time will tell.

This just in, new version of iTunes

If you are still reading this article even after the not so interesting headline, you get mad respect. Anyways, in almost virus protection software fashion, Apple has released another iTunes update: iTunes 8.0.1.

Apple lists the new features, well actually they're all bug fixes at the download site.

iTunes 8.0.1 supposedly improves stability and performance and provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

Seamlessly plays the current song when creating a new Genius playlist. Improves syncing spoken menus to iPod nano. Addresses an issue of deleting HD TV episodes when downloading. Improves checking for updates from the App Store Improves accessibility with VoiceOver. Addresses problems syncing Genius results to iPod.

Certainly nothing enough to make me rock the boat between 8.0 and my pwned 2.1 iPhone (who just recently started getting along). But for those of you who are interested in having cutting edge Apple software, let me know how it works...(or if anything stops working).

As usually, you can download the latest iTunes version from our iPhone Downloads page.

P.S. I generally let the DevTeam tell me when to update ;op not Apple.

iPhone firmware 2.1 coming friday

At his Let's Rock event, Steve Jobs announced that a new iPhone firmware 2.1 will be made available for download this friday.

Steve Jobs called it a "big" update but seeing what this update will bring, it looks to me like the usual "bug fixes" update...Here is what Steve had to say about the new 2.1 iPhone and iPod Touch firmware:

no crashes with applications - Oh, thanks Steve, you're too generous... fewer dropped calls - never had any issue with that. This means they will update the baseband big battery improvement - Hmm, I heard that before... faster backups - ok, cool, what else? that's it

You will ask: "what about this fucking copy/paste I've been waiting for since June 29, 2007?" Well my friend, no word about this. Now, if Apple had added copy/paste or push notification, THAT would have been a "BIG" update. To me this update should have been 2.0.3 and not 2.1.

I highly recommend you wait for the DevTeam to come up with a new Pwnage tool before upgrading - that is for users with jailbroken iPhones, of course!
