Rumors

This Is The Next iPhone

A few days ago, Gizmodo received the pictures of what was supposed to be the next iPhone. We see these all the time and when I read that this iPhone had been found in a bar in San Jose, I completely disregarded the rumor.

Gizmodo happened to actually get their hands on the device and decided to take it apart. Against all odds, it turns out that looking at the "guts" of the device, it seems extremely likely that this is indeed the next iPhone.

Why, will you ask, why should we believe this is the next iPhone and not some crap fake from China? Well, according to Giz, the proofs are pretty strong:

According to Gruber, it's been reported lost The screen resolution seems much better than the iPhone 3GS According to the person who found it, it was running OS 4.0 It is recognized as an iPhone when you plug it in iTunes Finally, the definitive proof is the Apple-branded components which can hardly be faked

What's new in this iPhone?

a brand new and slick design a front-facing camera an improved back camera camera flash an improved screen display Micro-SIM (like the iPad 3G) instead of the standard SIM 3 grams heavier than the iPhone 3GS the battery is 16% bigger than the 3GS

There is much more to it and I really suggest you check out Gizmodo's coverage for all the details, pictures and videos.

You know that I'm always tough on Apple, usually being really critical but if this is indeed the new iPhone, I believe it is going to blow our mind as Apple is finally giving us the hardware we've wanted for a while.

Wall Street Journal Chimes in on iPhone Rumors

The iPhone rumors and speculation seem to go hand in hand. Even the iPhone itself was a rumor for years before it came into production. Now, If you sift through all the tech blogs like me every morning, you know that Apple is likely to announce an update to the iPhone this summer and there's definitely no shortage on speculation. Will it have a front facing camera? Will they up the megapixels of the camera to compete with the 5MP Android handsets? As far as the software goes, will it support multitasking, will it have a universal inbox?

Perhaps the most consistent rumor is that Apple is working on a CDMA iPhone that would allow it to work on the U.S. powerhouses Sprint and Verizon, significantly increasing Apple's market in the United States. But the response has always been "With Sprint just getting it's 4G network going and Verizon launching it's LTE network later this year, why wouldn't Apple wait for those 2 technologies to mature before manufacturing a batch of CDMA phones that would have obsolete technology within the next 2 years."

Both LTE and 4G are just fancy names for the next generation of cell phone networks. Think blazing fast download speeds, Verizon posted an average 5-12MBPS with bursts of up to 50MBPS download speeds in initial live LTE tests. I don't care who you are, that's lightning.

But none the less CDMA iPhone rumors seem to always regain life, this time it's the Wall Street Journal throwing in their 2 cents:

Verizon also is upgrading its network to a higher-speed technology, so Apple has said it believed CDMA was a short-term technology. Apple later changed its mind as it realized Verizon's upgrade would take longer than expected, said people familiar with the situation.

Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimates Verizon could help Apple nearly double the number of iPhone users in the U.S.

So if you popped over there and read the entire article, you kinda get the idea that this is more than just your run of the mill rumor. I for one would not complain, living in a region where neither T-Mobile nor AT&T get very good reception but Verizon blankets the area. Only time will tell what the boys over in Cupertino are cooking up.

I have to admit my fingers are crossed for a larger screen (my work phone is a Motorola Droid and the 4 inch screen makes my iPhone's look tiny), 5 megapixel camera with flash ( 720p video? now I know I'm dreaming) and how about thinner with a faster processor and multitasking! Whew! Sadly Apple has proven time and time again that they add features and updates to products in small increments to lower the chance for hardware/software errors, so most of my list is not feasible.

But with Apple's iPad pre sales exceeding expectations, rumors already flying about the next iPhone, and their stock at an all time high of $233 per share, I'd say old Steve-O knows what he's doing.

Meet the new iPhone Killer: iPhone HD

Rumors about the new iPhone are mounting as June quickly approaches us. June is the month Apple traditionally hosts the annual Worldwide Developer Conference in which announcements of release dates for gadgets and software is made. This year is a little different as rumors mount about iPhone going to Verizon later this year, ending the choke hold AT&T has had with the iPhone.

Business Insider reports that iPhone HD, as it's currently dubbed, is slated to have twice the resolution of current iPhones checking in at 960 x 640 (compared to the current 480 x 320), a 1GHz processor and a front facing camera. There has also been mounting rumors that Apple will finally permit 3rd developers to hook into the multitasking API allowing 3rd party applications to run in the background.

Other sites have posted claims that iPhone HD will be a few millimeters longer. This may or may not be true but it is possible since the iPhone is purported to be developed for Verizon and Sprint, both use CDMA networks which may be a larger cellular chip.

Thus far, iPhone HD sounds great and it looks like it's already on it's way to killing current iPhones. But why, exactly, is the device dubbed "HD"? Is the screen high definition? If so, will high definition really make a difference on such a small screen? Or does the device output video in high definition? I'm inclined to believe the rumor caters the latter. There's simply no point in making a screen that small output in high definition resolution. But then again, I could be wrong. What are your thoughts on the new iPhone and this high definition rumor?

Will There Be An iPhone 4G?

One of my friends asked me the other day if the iPhone 4G was just a rumor or was going to be reality. The truth is it's somewhere in the middle.

There is absolutely no doubt that there will be a new iPhone coming out sometimes in July. If you were on the fence about buying an iPhone now, I'd suggest you wait a few month for the next generation.

There is a big misconception about the so-called iPhone 4G: its name! Apple called the second generation iPhone "3G" because it was "3G capable", 3G being the Third Generation wireless digital standard for fast data transmission.

For Apple to call their new phone the iPhone 4G, it would take it be to be 4G capabale. The problem is that we're still a few years away from 4G to be deployed in the States, so don't hold your breath for an iPhone 4G because this is not happening anytime soon. However, get ready for a badass new iPhone this summer!

iPhone 4G Into the Wild. Let the Rumors Begin!

You may have read that Pandav, iPhone dev of the iBart application has found tracks of a new iPhone in the usage records of his iPhone app.

According to TUAW:

Pandav noticed an identifier for "iPhone3,1" in their logs. The iPhone 3GS hardware identifier is "iPhone2,1", which means the next generation iPhone is already being tested.

I'm pretty sure this is only the beginning and we'll be seeing more of these reports in the coming weeks/months.

Like every year since the launch of the iPhone, rumors are gonna go wild. Here is my list of rumored features I am expecting to see in the next iPhone:

5 MP camera Front facing camera Multitasking Washer/Drier Dishwasher Microwave oven Air Bag Taser Water purifier

I know these features are kind of a stretch, but one can dream, right?

What are the features you want to see in the next iPhone? Don't be scared to go crazy

iPhone to Get Micro Projector?

DigiTimes reports that Foxlink, a subsidiary of Apple's iPhone manufacturer Foxconn, is currently developing its own micro projector technology that should start showing up on devices as soon as next year.

International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple, reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated the sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple.

Such a projector would allow you to project videos from your iPhone to an external surface. While that's a lovely rumor we'd like to be confirmed, I think it's very unlikely that we'll see a micro projector on the iPhone for a few years. It's still a very "bulky technology" that wouldn't physically fit on an iPhone without altering its neat design.

New iPhone Video to Be On Sale On Monday

Among all the new iPhone rumors, this one has to be the craziest but also the loveliest one. Ok, sit down and imagine for a minute... What would be better for this Monday's WWDC than having Steve Jobs himself coming back and unveil the new "iPhone Video" and actually announce it's going to be on sale the very same day?

How does that sound? Believe it or not, that's the rumor started by GearLive today and although I'm a little skeptical, I really hope these guys have good sources.

Talking to a few sources, it seems that the stars are in alignment for iPhone Video to launch this Monday. My understanding is that availability will be limited, because the plan was to launch in July. This means that Apple doesn’t have all the phones available now that they would have had in July for a launch - but you can expect regular replenishments of product.

I don't know about you guys but at 10 am on Monday, I will be at my local Apple Store here in San Diego, following the WWDC from my iPhone and making sure I'm going to be one of the first to get my hands on the new iPhone if indeed it comes out that day...

New iPhone Name: iPhone V3 or iPhone Video?

I wrote about possible names for the new iPhone yesterday and it seems we have more info coming up about that.

Carphone Warehouse added four placeholders (see image above) to their inventory list for new iPhone models earlier today:

iPhone 16GB V3 Black iPhone 16GB V3 White iPhone 32GB V3 Black iPhone 32GB V3White

TUAW also has received an anonymous tip stating that AT&T's support website will be updated with "iPhone Video" (see image below) as one of the model choices when choosing Apple as the phone manufacturer.

These are just inventory references and I still believe the new iPhone will simply called "iPhone". I guess time will tell...

New iPhone Pictures Leaked

These pictures were supposedly taken by an Apple employee. If that's the case, I guess they are pictures of the dev website which will go live once the new iPhone is announced next week at the WWDC. The pictures were posted on iSpazio, where it says you can see a front camera and the speaker moved upward. I personally don't see anything! (click on each picture for a wider image)

What bugs me with these pictures is that there is no carrier logo on the iPhone. Apple has always shown the carrier logo on it's ads or website...

What do you think? Info or intox?

Exclusive: The Name of the New iPhone Will Be…

We're just days away of finally finding out about the new iPhone. Will all these rumors be confirmed at the WWDC? We'll figure it out soon enough. Something that no one has speculated on is the name of this new iPhone.

A little before the iPhone 3G was revealed last year, we all called it the "3G iPhone". I guess we were close enough. Given everything we know about this new iPhone coming up, medias have started calling it the "iPhone 3G 2009" or the "iPhone HD".

Let's try to be creative for a minute and come up with a few possible names:

iPhone III - I kinda like that one but I think it could be easily confused with iPhone 3G iPhone 3.0 - could be, but how will they call it when firmware 3.1 comes out in a few months? iPhone 3G Pro - no, too long, and too elitist. To me, "pro" means business iPhone 3G 2009 - if you want my opinion, that's gay (no offense)! No way Apple would pick such an unoriginal name iPhone 3G 2nd Generation - blahhh, this long name just made me puke in my mouth iPhone 4G - no, it would require a 4G network, which we don't have yet iPhone HD - nahhh. HD what? iPhone Video - could be, but video is just one feature among many others. Why not call it "iPhone Copy/Paste" while you're at it? iPhone Pre - no comment!

Alright, if I had to take one wild bet, I think the new iPhone is actually going to be called the "iPhone that finally has a decent camera, copy/paste, video recording, and MMS 3G" ;)

More seriously, I think Apple will simply call it "iPhone" to avoid alienating users who have the previous models.

What do you think the new iPhone will be called?

All The New iPhone Rumors In One Image

With the announcement of a new third generation iPhone next week at the WWDC, rumors are flying around like crazy. The Green Room put together this graphical representation of all the rumors that are circulating around (click the image for a larger view).

More details and sources of the rumours can be found over at The Green Room.

How Fast Will The Next iPhone Be?

Rumors are flying around about the specs of the new iPhone supposed to be coming out July 17. Can we believe rumors coming from some unknown factory in China? I don't know. However, there are rumors we can trust and those come directly from John Gruber of Daring Fireball.

According to Gruber's sources, the upcoming iPhone will carry a next generation processor:

Let's say the rumors are right -- and I believe they are -- that the next-generation iPhone's CPU will be running at 600 MHz. In the same way that, say, a 90 MHz Pentium was more than 1.5 times as fast as a 60 MHz 486, the 600 MHz CPU in the next iPhone will be more than 1.5 times as fast as the current 400 MHz iPhone CPU.

Apparently, RAM and storage will also be increased:

More RAM will significantly help performance, too, and I believe the new iPhones will sport 256 MB of memory, up from the 128 MB in all current models. Prices will stay the same — $199 and $299 — but storage will increase to 16 and 32 GB.

What about the overall look of the new iPhone?

Industrial design changes will be subtle, perhaps very subtle. I expect that cases designed for the iPhone 3G will continue to fit the new iPhone, and that the only colors will remain black and white.

Gruber also confirmed that the next iPhone will include a magnetometer, and improved camera that will shoot videos, and basic video editing capabilities.

I invite you to read the full article for more insights on the new iPhone.
