Leaked images seemingly show OS X 10.10 with Control Center, flatter UI and other iOS 7 features

Earlier this morning, someone has posted a set of alleged OS X 10.10 screenshots on Reddit only to pull them soon after.

In researching the authenticity of the purported photos, MacRumors has been able to dig up a few interesting tidbits concerning Apple's design direction for the next major update to its desktop operating system powering Macs.

The original photos have been removed since at the request of the original poster. We can't vouch for their authenticity and are reposting them here for entertainment purposes...

WWDC roundup: what to expect from Apple’s keynote

We're now less than 24 hours away from Apple's highly anticipated WWDC 2014 keynote. Beginning at 10 AM PST tomorrow, Tim Cook and other executives will take the stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco to give us all a glimpse of the company's future.

We don't know exactly what's going to be talked about, outside of new versions of OS X and iOS, but the rumor mill has provided us with a bevy of possibilities. So, as we do every year, we've put together a roundup of all the things we're expecting Apple to announce...

OS X Yosemite could be unveiled at WWDC on Monday

Apple is continuing to decorate the Moscone Center this afternoon ahead of next week's Worldwide Developers Conference. Earlier today we saw water-covered banners go up for iOS 8, and now we have an image of the inaugural OS X 10.10 banner.

As you can see in the image above, the sign consists of a large X in front of a mountainous background. It's believed this is actually the 'El Capitan' rock formation in Yosemite national park, which would suggest Apple is calling the 10.10 update 'Yosemite.'

First beta of OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 seeded to devs

Sticking to its accelerated releases schedule for operating system upgrades which now calls for one major OS X release each year, Apple's software teams have now began work on what would become the fourth major update to OS X Mavericks.

Simultaneously, its main group continues work on OS X 10.10, which will be previewed at next Monday's WWDC alongside iOS 8 and other "exciting" goodies.

The first OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 beta (build 13E9) has now been seeded to Apple's registered Mac developers. The work-in-progress software should become available to the general public through the company's OS X Beta Seed Program...

Google releases VirusTotal Uploader for OS X

Google on Monday released a useful tool for OS X aimed at beefing up Mac security by making it easy to upload suspicious files for scanning. The software works in conjunction with the popular VirusTotal service which was designed to accept user-submitted suspicious files.

It's simple to use and the whole experience is quite frictionless. After installing the free tool onto your Mac, you can simply right click on any file and selecting the pertinent option from the context menu to upload the file to VirusTotal for scanning...

Apple now makes it clear you’re not allowed to update or redownload refunded apps

If you've ever asked for a refund on a Mac, iPhone, iPod touch or iPad app you purchased in the Mac App Store or the App Store, Apple somewhat unexpectedly did allow you to update your existing installations - even reinstall previously refunded apps.

That's no longer the case. According to multiple reports, users who try to update or reinstall refunded iOS and OS X applications are now greeted with a prompt informing them that Apple no longer supports the practice...

Apple posts Safari 7.0.4/6.1.4 with fixes for WebKit vulnerabilities

Following the release of OS X 10.9.3, iTunes 11.2 and the subsequent iTunes 11.2.1 update (which fixed the disappearing Users folder in OS X 10.9.3), Apple on Wednesday issued a pair of Safari updates for OS X Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks systems.

Both Safari 7.0.4 for OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 and Safari 6.1.4 for OS X Lion 10.7.5, OS X Lion Server 10.7.5 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 are now available with fixes for vulnerabilities found in WebKit, the browser's open-sourced rendering engine...

Apple releases iTunes 11.2.1 to fix hidden /Users folder in OS X 10.9.3

Apple tonight released a minor update for its iTunes desktop client, bringing the app to version 11.2.1. The update doesn't appear to offer up any new features, but it does seem to fix the hidden /Users folder bug.

Following yesterday's release of OS X 10.9.3, some users complained that their /Users folder had disappeared. We passed along a simple workaround for the bug earlier today, but now an official fix is available...

Apple details 4K hardware support in OS X 10.9.3

Perhaps the key headline feature of the newly-released OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 is proper support for external 4K monitors. Previously, Mavericks would render text, icons and other user interface elements as-is, so everything appeared tiny due to the densely packed pixels on 4K monitors.

OS X 10.9.3 uses pixel-doubling to enable a true Retina experience where the size of the user interface does not change, it's just a lot sharper because OS X has a lot more pixels per square inch to work with.

Apple has now refreshed its support document with detailed information regarding compatible 4K monitors, display modes, video interfaces and Macs...

How to fix disappearing /Users folder in OS X 10.9.3

Apple yesterday released the OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Software Update and some of the people who have installed it reported that their /Users folder has seemingly disappeared from the Finder.

The /Users folder is located at the top level of your hard drive and holds sub-folders for specific user accounts so some feared 10.9.3 has messed up their system. Turns out the folder is there, it’s just hidden and here's how to unhide it...

OS X 10.9.3 arrives: proper 4K support, improved contact/calendar syncing and more

Following weeks of extensive testing and nearly a dozen betas seeded to its registered developers, Apple on Thursday released OS X 10.9.3 software update, the third major refresh of its latest Mavericks desktop operating system powering Macs.

It expectedly includes proper support for external 4K displays that makes everything crisper rathern than smaller. Other changes include more reliable contact and calendar syncing, the previously released Safari 7.0.3 and more...

Apple to accelerate Safari’s JavaScript engine

Nitro, WebKit's JavaScript interpreter used in Apple's Safari, is about to get a lot speedier as Apple is seemingly looking to close a speed gap between its browser and both Google Chrome's V8 and Mozilla Firefox's SpiderMonkey engines.

The vast majority of today's web applications use JavaScript for interactivity and other purposes so any improvements in a browser's JavaScript performance would normally trickle down to the end-user level, resulting in snappier web browsing...
