Should hackers wait for iOS 6 to release the next jailbreak?

Pod2g has just put up quite the interesting poll on his personal blog. The infamous hacker, who is responsible for a majority of the recent exploits found in iOS, is asking folks to vote on the following question: "Shall we hold off the jailbreak for iOS 6?"

The question comes just a few days after we heard that hackers were finally making some progress on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak. Of course, if it's released before iOS 6 comes out, the exploits will almost certainly be patched up in the new software...

HackStore: it’s like Cydia for your Mac

Cydia has become a household name in the jailbreak community over the past few years. The underground app store has withstood the tests of time and competition to become the de facto source for apps, themes and utilities that aren't allowed in the official App Store.

Last night, a similar app store launched for the Mac platform called HackStore. No, it doesn't include the same apps and tweaks that you'll find in Cydia. But it does contain apps and utilities that Apple wouldn't normally approve for its official Mac App Store...

Status update on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak

We've had a lot of folks asking us what the status is on the iOS 5.1 jailbreak, so we figured we'd give you guys an update with the latest info. As usual, pod2g has given us some insight into the progress of the hackers via a recent string of tweets.

The good news is that they have managed to bypass the ASLR (Address Space layout randomization) already. The complicated security measure could've taken much longer. The bad news is that a public jailbreak still seems to be a ways out...

How to unlock any jailbroken iPhone on iOS 5.0 or later on any baseband [Video]

Unlocking the iPhone 4S, and the iPhone 4 just got a whole lot easier thanks to the SAM package unlock revealed earlier this morning.

After alerting you guys to the news, we went into out labs and started testing this for ourselves. After a few failures, we were finally able to come up with a reliable method for making this work every time.

The good news is that this will likely become even easier as time goes on, and needless steps are eliminated. We're already to the point where we can switch back and forth between our AT&T SIM card and our T-Mobile SIM card without having to reconfigure anything. It's pretty awesome.

Check inside for our full tutorial that shows how to unlock any iPhone on iOS 5 or higher (running any baseband) using the SAM jailbreak package...

How to unlock your jailbroken iPhone right now using SAM – confirmed working

Chinese iPhone hacker Loktar_Sun has released a method for unlocking a jailbroken iPhone by yourself using Sam Bingner's SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) package.

The unlock technique has been verified by iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd. He was able to unlock his iPhone 4S and get it running on T-Mobile's network.

This is very big news for iPhone owners everywhere, and means we don't have to wait for AT&T to unlock our phones if we want to use it on another GSM network.

Hackers starting to make progress with iOS 5.1 jailbreak

We haven't really heard much on the jailbreak front since iOS 5.1 came out. The software update patched all previous exploits, meaning anyone who upgraded, lost their ability to jailbreak (well, A4 devices can still be jailbroken).

But we have good news today for the folks that have updated their devices to 5.1. Pod2g, who was largely responsible for Absinthe and Corona, says that he now has all of the exploits necessary to start working on a new jailbreak...

How to officially unlock your AT&T iPhone without losing your untethered jailbreak

The good news came out a week ago that AT&T would finally allow its customers with an off contract iPhone to officially unlock their device for free. In essence, the steps required to get the ball rolling are pretty simple. You just need to place a call to AT&T or hop on a chat with them online.

After collecting some basic information from you, AT&T will take its sweet time (72 hours to 2 weeks) to verify you are indeed illegible for unlocking your iPhone. Upon approval, you will then receive an email with instructions to complete the unlock.

But the caveat is that, if like many people out there you care about your jailbreak, you might not be able to update without losing your untethered jailbreak. This was one of my main concerns at first. I requested the unlock authorization from AT&T for my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1, and even though it is not my primary device, I didn't want to lose my untether jailbreak.

But unlike the email AT&T sends you upon approval of your iPhone unlock suggests, you do not have to completely restore your iPhone to complete the unlock...
