Verizon iPhone 5 to stay unlocked due to FCC agreements

Last week, we discovered that the Verizon version of the iPhone 5 comes with an unlocked SIM slot. Our very own Jeff confirmed the theory by using his VZW handset to connect to AT&T's GSM network.

While this was obviously great news, we were worried that things wouldn't stay this way because carriers don't generally like unlocked phones. But according to a new report, Verizon may not have a choice...

iPhone 5 personal pickup live after 10pm tonight

Strong demand and five million sales (perhaps even more) during the opening weekend continue to put a strain on the initial iPhone 5 supply. If you're in the market for an iPhone 5 and are an avid Apple fan, there's a reasonable chance you'll want to waltz inside one of Cupertino's shiny retail shrines. After all, a new iPhone is a once-in-a-year event so why not treat yourself to that talked-about buying and ownership experience, right?

The problem is, the iPhone 5 is hard to come by at the moment, even as Apple is regularly stocking stores. Luckily, there's now a better way of buying the sought-after device involving a simple online pre-reservation for in-store pickup the following day...

iPhone 5 support is “coming soon” to Sparrow

According to co-founder and developer Dominique Leca, the Sparrow team (now part of Google's Gmail team) is working on a minor update that will enable support for the iPhone 5 and its taller screen. "iPhone 5 support is coming soon to Sparrow", Dominique wrote on Twitter.

Still a big fan and regular user of Sparrow on both the Mac and iOS platform, I sure am pleased that they are continuing to provide at least basic level of support to ensure the program runs smoothly on refreshed devices...

Light leaks reported on some white iPhone 5 models

In addition to discovering aluminum is softer than glass, some iPhone 5 users are now reporting issues with light leaks. It's unclear whether this is a minor manufacturing issue affecting a small portion of users or a widespread problem. People may not even be aware that their device is leaking light as this becomes apparent only in low-light situations and for many it's not even a biggie. Did you spot light leaking out of your iPhone 5?

Apple beats Aston Martin, Google, Bang & Olufsen to rise as UK’s coolest brand

CoolBrands, an annual initiative to identify the UK's coolest brands annually since 2001, has published the official results for the calendar year 2012. Based on responses from 3,000 consumers and a panel of 39 experts, Apple was voted UK's number one brand. In fact, the Apple brand beat second-ranked YouTube, Aston Martin (#3), Twitter (#4) and Google (#5). Last year, the iPhone and iPod brands were ranked second and third, respectively, as Aston Martin took the leading spot...

Poll: did opening weekend iPhone 5 sales disappoint?

You may have heard that the "boring" iPhone 5 sold five million units during its first weekend on availability in nine major markets. Apple also announced that a hundred million iOS devices are now running iOS 6. But even as Apple notes that "we sold out of our initial supply" of iPhones while promising to "regularly" stock retail stores, first-weekend sales came in below the six million units estimated by analyst Gene Munster (ten million was his best case scenario). As a result, Apple's shares are down two percent in pre-market trading, perhaps indicating that Wall Street was expecting Cook & Co. to perform slightly better...

Apple announces 5 million iPhone 5 sales during launch weekend

Apple has announced that it sold a record-breaking 5 million iPhone 5s during its three day launch weekend, besting its previous record set by the iPhone 4S last year by more than a million.

The numbers shouldn't surprise anyone, considering the amount of demand we've seen for the device thus far. Apple said last week that it sold more than 2 million units in its first 24 hours...

Ryan Petrich gets Google Maps working on iOS 6

Apple's new Maps application, which replaces Google Maps in iOS 6, has caused quite a stir in the tech community over the past few days. It's been described as "inaccurate," and "glitchy," and many feel that it's extremely inferior to its predecessor.

But the good news is, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. At least for jailbreakers anyway. Well-known jailbreak developer Ryan Petrich announced earlier today the he was able to get Google Maps working on iOS 6. And here's the video...

Many iPhone 5 pre-orders seen shipping earlier than expected

If you pre-ordered your iPhone 5, either through Apple or your wireless provider, and didn't get it in within the first hour or so, chances are you haven't received the handset yet. Shipping estimates slipped to two weeks shortly after retailers began taking pre-orders last Friday.

But good news today for those of you that fall into that category. It appears that Apple has started shipping many "late" iPhone 5 pre-orders earlier than expected...

iPhone 5 parody clip: “a taller change than expected”

One of the most noticeable and talked about features of the iPhone 5 is its new display. For the first time, Apple has made the handset's screen larger, bumping it up to right around 4-inches.

But in order to maintain usability, Apple only increased the height of the display, not the width. And this has spawned some criticism from the tech world, as well as this hilarious parody...

New A6 chip confirmed to have three GPU cores

The iPhone 5 launched yesterday, and first impressions seem to be in line with the early reviews: the thing is fast. As most of you know, Apple custom-built an all-new processor for the handset called the A6.

Now that the phone is available, we expect to learn more about the new chip as teardown experts continue to rip the device apart. In fact, a new tidbit has already surfaced: the A6 has triple-core graphics...
