China Telecom starts taking iPhone 5 pre-orders

Echoing earlier reports, folks in China can now officially get an iPhone 5 as China Telecom, the smallest of the country's three telecom carriers, started taking pre-orders for the device yesterday. According to a local report, a member of the customer service staff at the carrier's Beijing branch confirmed iPhone 5 pre-orders in mainland China.

The country's largest home appliance retailer, Suning, started taking pre-orders for the device earlier in the month. No word on availability of CDMA iPhone 5 models on Apple's long-time iPhone distributor, China Unicom...

The iPad dominated mobile shopping on Black Friday

The annual day-after-Thanksgiving sales blitz known as Black Friday is now behind us. We'll likely see several more deals and discounts over the next month, but the long lines and door busters are gone.

The lines, though, were noticeably shorter this year than they were in 2011, despite the fact that retail sales were up. And that can only mean that more people are doing their holiday shopping online...

Musician Will.i.am launching a 14-megapixel iPhone camera attachment next week

This is gonna be every iPhoneographer’s dream come true. Apparently, musician Will.i.am is set to launch an interesting iPhone accessory next week via his new consumer electronics venture.

It basically replaces the device's built-in iSight camera with a 14-megapixel sensor that clips onto the iPhone to provide dramatically enhanced clarity and definition of your snaps.

The gizmo also has its own built-in flash better than the iPhone's. "You dock you phone into our device and it turns you smartphone into a genius-phone", he tells The Telegraph. "We take over the camera"...

A violent iOS game with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak starring as a character has hit the App Store. Vengeance: Woz With A Coz is now available for your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad for just 99 cents a pop. The addictive 8-bit platformer puts you in the shoes of Steve Wozniak or Danny Trejo. The Woz himself wrote the back story which involves his wife, J-Woz, being kidnapped during their evening together.

You're tasked with saving her, which involves defeating various bosses, collecting bonuses and blasting your way through Fusion City using a bunch of different weapons. A tie-in to Trejo's upcoming movie, "Vengeance", coming in early 2013, the game features Baby Bash, Rashad Evans and other celebrities. Go past the break for more info and screenies...

Analyst calls for a cheap iPhone in two years

Piper Jaffray's resident Apple analyst Gene Munster - you know, one of the iTV fame - is back at it predicting Apple's gonna launch an inexpensive iPhone model in two years time. Recognizing Apple's tiny market share in emerging markets like Russia, India, Brazil and China (collectively referred to as BRIC territories), he's calling for an unsubsidized, sub-$200 iPhone around 2014. Currently, Apple's handset is a high-end play, with older models selling at reduced price points.

As carriers pay big bucks to subsidy its high cost, users typically must sign on a dotted line. But not everyone is willing to accept contractual commitment in exchange for an iPhone. Meanwhile, competitors are successfully exploiting Apple's price weaknesses, churning out Android cheapos that have pushed the platform in places like China to as much as an astounding 90 percent smartphone share...

AT&T now has refurbished iPhone 5 starting at $99

Looking to snag an iPhone 5 on the cheap? Well if you're an AT&T subscriber, or don't mind becoming one, you're in luck. The carrier has just started offering refurbished models of Apple's latest handset, and the 16GB version costs just $99...

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to hit iOS December 6

Last month, Rockstar announced that in celebration of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's 10 years, it was going to be releasing a special anniversary edition of the title on iOS and Android sometime this fall.

At the time, the studio was pretty vague on details surrounding the upcoming game. But yesterday, it published a blog post confirming its release date, price and other information. Details after the fold...

This case turns your iPhone into a Swiss Army knife, literally

Smartphones are often referred to as Swiss Army knives. They're digital cameras, and movie players. And with their vast app selections, there's little else they can't do — much like the popular pocketable multi-tool.

But the new TaskOne case takes the term a little more literally. With its built-in 2.5" drop point blade, bottle opener, wire cutters and host of other tools, it actually does turn your iPhone into a Swiss Army knife...

Screenshot Frame Maker makes iOS devices screen grabs easy and pretty

As a blogger, I often use screenshots to show my readers what I am reviewing, seeing, or experiencing. When words cannot accurately portray a picture, or when I don't want to write 1,000 words to describe something, the image is the best way. Taking a screen grab and tossing it into an article is all well and good, but adding the hardware frame around the image adds a nice touch, even a little flare, to the otherwise simple image.

Neoos specializes in mobile information technology with the goal to create simple applications to simplify complex tasks. As a caveat, Neoos is the company behind Doodle.com, a 10 million user per month service to simplify meeting schedules. Their new offering, Screenshot - Frame Maker, is a universal iOS app that simplifies the process implanting a grab into an iDevice hardware frame...

Sparrow updated with iPhone 5 and Passbook support

After Apple rejected Sparrow's iPhone 5 update earlier in the month, critics cried foul and commentators happily pointed out Apple was attempting to derail the popular email client for iOS devices and Macs. There was little hope left for new features after Google acquired Sparrow in June. Plus, the search giant acknowledged as much when it said the Sparrow team would move to Google's Mountain View offices to work on new Gmail features. It's a welcome sign, then, that a new version of Sparrow just surfaced on the App Store. Though short of features, it does bring out two major nice-to-haves: support for the iPhone 5's taller display and Passbook integration...

U.S. National Transportation Safety Board drops BlackBerry for iPhone

Last month, the U.S. Immigration and Customer Enforcement agency and government consultant Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. both announced plans to drop BlackBerry smartphones and deploy iPhones and Android devices instead. The Pentagon is also prepping to deploy Apple's and Google's platform.

The Defense Department is conducting search for a contractor that will build a system to manage and secure a fleet of 162,500 iPhones, iPads and Android devices. And now, rubbing salt into the wound, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board confirms it will be making the switch.

In a document posted last week to a federal website, the agency dissed BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, writing its devices have been “failing both at inopportune times and at an unacceptable rate”. Ouch!

Review: iZON Wi-Fi video monitor and its companion iOS app

Like the Lidless Eye of Sauron, iZON stares unblinkingly into your home, taking note of all within. Scary, right? Well, not exactly, as there are many uses for a Wi-Fi enabled video monitor in the home, office, or abroad. The iZON, pronounced "eyes-on," provides a single video feed across a wireless network that streams through the iZON server system, giving the user access to the feed anywhere in the world with your iOS device. If there is a need for you to be two places at once, the iZON can be your eyes and ears whether watching your newborn, crazy pet, or the front door...
