Google+ for iOS gains Stories support, adds new photo editor with filters and more

Following a stream of ongoing WWDC keynote coverage yesterday, the Internet giant Google issued an update to its Google+ iOS client containing some newsworthy new features.

The free iPhone and iPad app has been bumped to version 4.7.0 and now offers support for nice-looking digital travelogues, called Stories, that Google unveiled last month.

For those unfamiliar with Google+ Stories, it's an album feature that works by combining your photos, videos and location data into interactive presentations. T-Mobile will support Wi-Fi calling on iOS 8

Just a few hours ago, we rounded up a list of iOS 8 features that Apple simply didn't have much time to mention at its WWDC keynote this afternoon. One of them was Wi-Fi calling, which allows iPhone users to place calls over Wi-Fi as opposed to a cellular network. The feature allows for wireless customers to potentially save money on their monthly plans, which you would think is something that carriers would be against.

Not T-Mobile. Being the awesome underdog carrier that it has been as of late, the magenta-flavored company has embraced the feature with full arms. Earlier today, T-Mobile marketing chief Mike Sievert confirmed in a news release (via MacRumors) that Wi-Fi calling will be enabled for iPhone users on iOS 8, meaning that over 90% of smartphones on the network will be capable of the feature…

Resizable simulator in Xcode 6 hints at new iPhone screen sizes

iOS 8 is compatible with iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or later

Apple has posted a list of devices that will be compatible with the iOS 8 software update on its website. The devices include the iPhone 4S or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini or later and the fifth-generation iPod touch. iOS 8 adds always-on ‘Hey, Siri’ feature, Shazam integration

Adding to the long list of new features in iOS 8 is a handful of Siri improvements. The digital assistant didn't get a ton of stage time, but iOS/OS X chief Craig Federighi did take a moment to run down some of its new capabilities.

Apple introduces ‘HomeKit’ smart home platform

As expected, Apple has announced a new platform for smart home accessories called HomeKit. The new API, which will launch with iOS 8, will make it easier for smart accessories to allow their devices to be controlled by iPhones, as well as Siri.

This will allow users to control HomeKit-certified smart appliances, such as garage doors, lights and security cameras, by simply speaking a command. Imagine saying 'get ready for bed,' and watching all of your [smart] doors lock and lights turn off...

Designer’s book ‘Keep it Simple’ highlights early Apple phone and tablet prototypes

In a follow-up to his 2012 book 'Design Forward,' industrial designer Hartmut Esslinger released 'Keep it Simple' late last year. The book talks about the collaboration between Esslinger and Steve Jobs during the mid-80s, which led to the creation of several iconic Apple products.

Item printing resurrected in 1Password for iOS, iTunes backups added

1Password by AgileBits, one of the finest password management utilities on iOS and OS X, has received an update in the App Store today.

For starters, the new version 4.5.2 brings back the item printing feature after previously being removed. Next, this edition of 1Password adds another syncing option, in addition to Dropbox and iCloud: iTunes.

This allows you to store backups of your passwords, notes, credit cards and other private information as local files that can be accessed and copied to your computer using the iTunes File Sharing feature. You should also experience faster syncing and more reliable performance overall.
