New report reiterates ‘5C’ name for budget iPhone, calls for a gold 5S colorway

It's been a big weekend for iPhone rumors. And now that we've all circled September 10 on our calendars as the likely date for Apple's big smartphone event, it's time to start trying to figure out just what exactly it'll unveil.

A new report out of Japan today corroborates previous chatter, claiming that we'll be seeing two iPhones on stage that Tuesday: a low-budget model that is indeed called the 'iPhone 5C,' and an iPhone 5S with a gold colorway...

Apple to unveil new iPhone at September 10th event

Apple will take the wraps off of its next generation iPhone, believed to be the iPhone 5S, on September 10, according to a new report from The WSJ-owned AllThingsD. The blog says that sources have confirmed the company is planning a media event for the date.

While we haven't seen near the amount of "leaked" parts for the new iPhone as we have for the rumored budget model or the iPad 5, we still think we have a pretty good idea what to expect: a familiar-looking device with internal upgrades and an improved camera...

The iPhone 5S may incorporate dual-LED flash independently of camera lens

The not-entirely-accurate Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes back in June 2011 incorrectly reported that the then rumored iPhone 5 would incorporate dual-LED flash. That hasn't panned out, but the rumor lives on. Numerous reports and a purported backplate seemingly point to Apple adopting dual-LED flash on the iPhone 5S.

But unlike the standard implementations, Apple engineers may have chosen to incorporate the LED flash module completely independent from the camera lens, potentially reducing interference with the camera module...

Biometric expert breaks down how an iPhone fingerprint sensor could work

After months of rumors and speculation, evidence popped up last month seemingly confirming that future iOS devices will have built-in fingerprint sensors. Code was found hidden in iOS 7 that refers directly to the feature, suggesting we could see it as soon as this year.

The idea, though, of Apple putting fingerprint sensors in its mobile devices spawns a number of questions like: what will it be used for, how will it work, and how durable will it be? Luckily, biometric authentication expert Geppy Parziale has decided to impart some of his wisdom...

iOS 7 code reveals Apple’s upcoming A7 chip has Samsung components

As iOS 7 gets closer and closer to release, developers digging through the depths of the firmware continue to find more and more hidden gems. Thus far, the coding has revealed fingerprint sensor support, an A6 iPad mini without a Retina display, and now this.

A new discovery in the code has surfaced this afternoon that shines some light on the processor which Apple is expected to use in its upcoming iPhone 5S. Apple is believed to be developing a new A7 chip, and according to today's finding, it's made by Samsung...

Foxconn reportedly hiring 90,000 workers to help with iPhone 5S production

A new report out of Taiwan this morning claims that Foxconn is going on a major hiring spree to help fill orders for Apple's next generation iPhone, believed to be the iPhone 5S. Production on the handset is said to be ramping up ahead of its fall launch.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, Taiwanese publication Focus Taiwan reports that Foxconn is starting to heavily recruit for its Shenzhen plant, and it's looking to add as many as 90,000 people to its workforce as it begins to fulfill major 5S orders...

Hidden code in iOS 7 seemingly confirms iPhone with built-in fingerprint sensor

After a three week hiatus, Apple seeded the 4th beta of iOS 7 to developers this morning. The update brings about a number of UI changes and improvements, but no new features have been spotted yet—until now.

Developer Hamza Sood has discovered some hidden code within the beta that seemingly confirms the rumors that the next generation iPhone will feature a built-in fingerprint sensor...

Rumor: Apple to discontinue iPhone 5 alongside budget, 5S launch

A new report out of Korea today claims that Apple is going to be discontinuing production of the iPhone 5 this fall, transferring all of its efforts to its next generation flagship handset, the iPhone 5S, and the long-rumored 'budget iPhone.'

Citing 'industry partners' with knowledge of the situation, ETNews is reporting this afternoon that Apple has asked its supply chain partners to wind down iPhone 5 production. And, according to the report, it plans to halt it altogether this fall...

Analyst: iPad 5/iPhone 5S/budget model in September, no Retina iPad mini in 2013

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is fast becoming the de facto most reliable Apple watcher. Expanding on his April note which advised investors to brace themselves for a delayed iDevice roll-out over manufacturing "challenges," his just-updated shipments timetable now offers more in way of detail.

Long story short, the analyst is expecting the iPhone 5S in late-September, but in limited quantity, with the oft-rumored plastic iPhone (he's calling it an 'iPhone Lite') becoming available even sooner than the iPhone 5S in early-September because its chassis is easier to make than the two-tone iPhone 5S design.

Early September will also bring us an updated iPad 5, he said, but there will be no iPad mini successor this year due to engineering issues. As for the Mac family, Kuo sees a mid-September launch of a Haswell-enabled Retina MacBook Pro, with a Haswell-driven iMac up for a late-August introduction. The full breakdown is right after the break...

iPhone 5S to have 4.3-inch screen? Probably not

With last month's trial production and this month's ramp-up underway, all checks now point to Apple having finalized the next iPhone and now mass producing the device, in time for a presumed Fall launch.

A Chinese website behind alleged iPhone 5S production shots is adamant the iPhone 5S has the same four-inch display as its predecessor.

That may not be the case: if a Taiwanese newspaper is to be trusted, Apple has increased the iPhone 5S's screen to measure 4.3 inches diagonally. Worse, the move, the story goes, may delay the handset's introduction until the end of the year...

Genuine-looking iPhone 5S production images and specs leak

Just a day after AllThingsD confirmed analyst Piter Misek's claim of the iPhone 5S production ramp-up in July, a Chinese website leaks a few images that appear to depict a bunch of production iPhone 5S units.

There's no way of determining authenticity of the photos because the iPhone 5S is widely expected to re-use the two-tone design of the current-generation iPhone 5.

The Chinese source also spelled out technical specifications that match up with past rumors.

Go past the fold for the full breakdown...

AllThingsD confirms July iPhone 5S production, new mid-tier iPhone variant

The-not-so-reliable analyst Peter Misek made rounds last week convincing clients that mass production of the iPhone 5S was about to start later in the month, in time for a late-September or early-October launch.

Misek's mixed track record and another surprising claim of his - that Apple has already begun production of a rumored lower-cost iPhone - led us to file the report under the 'Unlikely' drawer.

But the story unexpectedly grew more legs today as AllThingsD, the respectable blog owned by the credulous Wall Street Journal, independently confirmed that this is indeed the case...
