Office for iPad coming after touch-enabled Windows version, says Ballmer

Earlier in June of this year, software maker Microsoft finally posted its long overdue Office 365 for iPhone (Jeff reviewed it here). The native iPad build, however, was nowhere to be seen. Speaking at a Gartner event in Florida today, Microsoft's outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer slipped in that Office for iPad is indeed being worked on.

He also cautioned that his company will first release touch-optimized version of Office for Windows before unleashing the iPad edition. In case you've been wondering, touch-optimized Office is currently "in progress"...

Transport Tycoon now available on the App Store

Back in July, we received word that an official port of Transport Tycoon would be coming to iOS this year. The game, which was originally released for PCs back in 1994, is still regarded as one of the best simulators of all time.

Well for those who missed it, the game landed in the App Store this weekend and is now available for download. It's been redesigned from the ground up for touchscreen, and has thus far received high ratings from reviewers...

AT&T U-verse app for iPhone updated to let you watch live TV

AT&T U-verse subscribers will be happy to hear that you can now watch live TV right on your iPhone (and iPad). The TV, phone and Internet provider updated its iOS client this weekend with this and several other new features.

Today's 3.0.1 update also adds a slew of improvements to the app's visual interface, with new fonts, colors and Retina graphics. And the remote control screens have been revamped with sound settings for enhanced usability...

500px app gets new edge-to-edge design and more in 2.2 update

Popular photo-sharing service 500px has posted a significant update for its iOS client this weekend. The release, which brings the app to version 2.2, includes an all-new visual design and new swipe gestures.

The new translucent edge-to-edge design makes the app's interface more streamlined and accentuates high resolution photos. And the new swipe gestures help you quickly perform actions like 'Like' and 'Reply.'

Rdio takes on Spotify and others with free mobile radio

Last summer, Spotify updated its mobile apps with a free Pandora-like radio service, and it has since seen its subscriber base grow by more than a third. Today, Rdio is betting on the same horse with its own mobile radio feature.

Rdio’s radio service—which it calls 'Stations'—will be available via its mobile apps. Like Pandora or iTunes Radio, users won't be able to choose a specific song or artist. But they will be able to listen to music based on their tastes...

Original Plants vs. Zombies updated with support for iOS 7, 4-inch displays

Those of you who weren't impressed by Plants vs. Zombies 2 or its 'freemium' business model will be happy to hear that EA has updated the original PvZ game with support for the latest devices and firmware.

Posted late last night, Plants vs. Zombies version 1.9.9 includes support for the recent iOS 7 software update, as well as the larger resolution for the 4-inch displays found on newer iPhones and iPod touches...

Volkswagen shows off augmented reality iPad app for repair technicians

Apple's iPad has been used for a number of various augmented-reality applications which impose real-world information over live video feed. The car industry seems to be particularly keen on embracing the Apple tablet. Cody last month told you about eKurzinfo, an Audi app that uses an iOS device camera to help identify parts and features on your car.

Today, Volkswagen is highlighting a similar augmented-reality software, but aimed at repair technicians and car dealers. It's called MARTA (Mobile Augmented Reality Technical Assistance) and Volkswagen showed it off ahead of the InsideAR Conference, the world's largest augmented reality conference slated to run October 11, 2013 in Munich, Germany...

Apple patent envisions digital autographs

Have you ever read a book or listened to music and wanted an autograph of the author or artist? For printed items, the wish is easily granted - not so for their electronic equivalent. Now Apple has filed to patent a method for embedding autographs in ebooks and other digital material.

The patent application, titled 'Embedding an autograph in an electronic book,' describes a way an author can use a special application to digitally sign an ebook, video, song or author content, then share it with owners of the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad devices...

Echofon Twitter client redesigned in iOS 7 update

Those keeping track of major iOS 7 app updates can add another one to the list this morning. The popular Twitter client Echofon has received a major redesign in its 7.0 update.

For the most part, the app acts and runs like its predecessor. But the UI has received a fresh coat of iOS 7-inspired paint with flat blue text and icons, and ample empty white space...
