Time names the iPhone 5 ‘Gadget of the Year’

The year is winding down, and like clockwork, TIME Magazine has released its annual collection of 55 lists showcasing the best and the worst of the past 12 months. And as you've probably already gleaned from the title, the publication has named the iPhone 5 its 'Gadget of the Year.'

Apple's handset beat out several rival products from Samsung and Microsoft, including the Note II and the Surface tablet, as well as Nintendo's new Wii U gaming console. In fact, author Harry McCracken says that it's is one of the most artfully polished gadgets anyone’s ever built...

iPhone 5 helps Apple grab a quarter of the world’s LTE device market

In less than three months the iPhone 5 has been available, Apple has laid claim to more than 26 percent of the LTE device market. While rival Samsung still is the LTE leader, its position fell by nearly 11 percent following the iPhone 5's September 21 launch, researchers say.

Smartphones from by Apple and Samsung are leading an explosion in LTE use. While 2011 ended with nine million 4G subscriptions, 2012 will exit with fifty million LTE users, according to Strategy Analytics. Asia appears to be a hotspot for LTE use, the research firm noted...

China Unicom surpasses 300,000 iPhone 5 pre-orders

The iPhone 5 doesn't officially launch in China until the 14th, but sales of the handset are believed to already be well past half a million. Two of the countries largest carriers have been taking pre-orders for weeks now, and there appears to be a lot of interest.

China Unicom, for example, just announced that it has fielded more than 300,000 iPhone 5 reservations during its first week of pre-sales. And China Telecom is said to have similar figures. So needless to say, experts are planning for a big launch this Friday...

So, are you tired of the iPhone 5 already? Feeling the after-announcement blues, sort of like the after-Christmas let-down? Cheer up, Apple fans, the iPhone 5S (or the iPhone 6 or whatever Apple calls it) is coming next June or July. According to one Wall Street observer, the new iPhone will include a "super HD" camera and screen, stronger battery and NFC.

What's more, the iPhone 5S will arrive in a rainbow of colors, or at least 6-8 different colors, according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek. Also on tap: the iPad 5 with an IGZO screen and more colors...

T-Mobile bets the iPhone will curb subscriber churn

As you know, T-Mobile USA, the nation's fourth-largest carrier, will finally land Apple's iPhone next year. The Deutsche Telekom-owned telco is making no excuse for its failure to land the sough-after device earlier and, unsurprisingly, is looking to tap the popularity of the Apple smartphone to win back some of its subscribers lost to rivals AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint.

T-Mobile USA CEO John Legere told reporters on Friday that his company, which has 33 million customers in the United States, is hoping to steal would-be subscribers who are eyeing an iPhone on a rival network. Even more so, the German company acknowledges that having the iPhone is key to returning to growth in subscriptions by the end of 2013...

iPhone 5 now ‘in stock’ in many countries

Over the past few weeks, we've watched as iPhone 5 supply slowly leveled out with consumer demand. Shortly after launch, availability of the handset slipped to 3-4 weeks, and it has since improved to two weeks, one week, 2-4 days.

Then today, shoppers noticed that shipping estimates for the smartphone on Apple's web store have completely disappeared, meaning that it's in stock and available for immediate shipping for the first time since September...

Apple's standing in the growing China smartphone market has taken another hit, slipping to #6 during the third quarter, research firm IDC announced Thursday. The iPhone 5 hits Samsung’s home turf

As promised, Apple on Friday rolled the iPhone 5 out in Samsung's home turf of South Korea, home to population of 50 million people. Today's launch will be augmented by the global roll-out to an additional 50 countries later in the month as Apple works on fulfilling its self-imposed schedule of having the device available in a hundred countries and across 240 carriers by year's end.

The Cupertino firm appears to have caught up with demand as the online Apple Store now quotes 2-4 business days for online deliveries. The previous two-per-customer limitation has also been lifted so people can now order as much iPhones as they wish...

Older iPhones popular with first-time smartphone buyers

Despite Samsung maintaining its smartphone lead, partly thanks to its massive advertising push, and consumers picking up Apple's latest thing in droves, owners of feature phones - the types who'd never owned a smartphone and are looking to upgrade - are increasingly eyeing the iPhone 4 and 4S, a new study has revealed.

Specifically, 75 percent of people buying their first iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S never owned an iPhone before. And once they're in, they tend to stay in the ecosystem, as indicated by another data point: seven out of each ten iPhone 5 buyers are upgrading from another iPhone...

China Mobile president says iPhone deal is still in the works

The iPhone 5 is slated to land in China on December 14. China Unicom and China Telecom have already started taking pre-orders, but unfortunately, China Mobile — the largest carrier in the world — will once again be sitting on the sidelines.

The two companies are still discussing a deal though. China Mobile president Yue Li confirmed yesterday that the carrier has been in talks with Apple for the past three years to bring the popular iPhone handset to its 700 million subscribers...
