Apple reportedly in talks with LG over 4K TV panels

With all of the recent chatter regarding the budget iPhone and so-called iWatch, it seems like the rumor mill has forgotten all about Apple's plan to build a television set. Looking back, the last iTV report popped up back in May.

But that doesn't mean the project is dead. In fact, according to this new report from DigiTimes, it's very much alive. The controversial outlet claims that Apple is currently in talks with LG Display over large-sized 4K TV panels...

New report says fingerprint sensor causing iPhone 5S production issues

The ever-controversial DigiTimes is reporting this morning that Apple's upcoming flagship handset, believed to be the iPhone 5S, could be in short supply when it launches later this year. It seems that its fingerprint sensor is causing production issues.

Though we've yet to see any physical evidence to support the theory, we've heard a number of reports over the past few months claiming Apple has used its new AuthenTec technology to build a fingerprint sensor into (or underneath) the 5S Home button...

DigiTimes: minor iPad mini refresh this year, ‘almost bezel-free’ Retina version in 2014

We've already heard from multiple sources that Apple is still 'adjusting'  new iPad mini, with alleged panel shortages pushing a Retina iPad mini 2 into 2014 and prompting Apple to ready a minor update this year until the Retina version with a faster chip is ready next year. A new report out this morning from Taiwan adds more color to these rumors.

For starters, the Retina iPad mini is said to be "almost bezel-free," which will allow for a bigger viewing area.

A slightly updated model should be expected in the fourth quarter of this year and is said to be "lighter, thinner and equipped with improved specifications," which probably includes a faster chip than the A5 package found inside the current iPad mini model...

DigiTimes: iPad 5 with optimized battery in September, Apple ‘still adjusting’ new iPad mini

According to the supply chain sources who spoke to DigiTimes, the Taiwanese trade publication infamous for its mixed track record, Apple will release a fifth-generation 9.7-inch iPad in September. As for the second-generation iPad mini, the company is "still adjusting" that device.

What this means is that iPad mini 2 specs have not been decided on yet. Its bigger brother may sport a longer battery life than the usual ten-hour rated performance iPads are known for due to an optimized battery design...

Apple reportedly contracts out next-gen mobile chip manufacture to TSMC

After a long period of rumor mongering, it would seem that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest independent semiconductor foundry, is finally stealing Apple chip biz from rival Samsung. If a new report out of Taiwan is to be trusted, Apple has cut a long-term deal with TSMC to produce A-series chips for future iPhones, iPods and iPads built on TSMC's 20-nanometer, 16-nanometer and 10-nanometer process technology.

If true, it's the final nail in the coffin in the strained Apple-Samsung technology relationship. And good riddance, too, because Samsung will no longer be able to have a headstart of Apple's future semiconductor solutions...

New report claims redesigned iPad coming in Q3, new iPad mini in Q4

This year has been kind of a weird one for Apple in terms of product releases. It's June now, and we have yet to see a new iPad this year (no, I'm not counting the 128GB model). That hasn't happened since the tablet's inception back in 2010.

But it's coming. Or should I say they're coming. Apple is expected to release both a new iPad and iPad mini this year. And according to a new report out of China, the former is coming in Q3, and the latter will arrive just before the holidays...

DigiTimes: 33 percent lighter iPad 5 on track for September release

DigiTimes, the-sometimes-reliable Taiwanese trade publication, on Monday ran a report which quotes sources with Taiwan's supply chain who claim that a fifth revision to Apple's full-size 9.7-inch iPad will be 25-33 percent lighter than its previous generation.

The fifth-generation iPad is believed to be entering trial production next month, meaning the device should be on track for a rumored September launch. Initial output is pegged at up to three million units until Apple and its manufacturing partners reach yield levels necessary to ramp up production...

Apple reportedly cuts back on iPad mini screens ahead of next-gen model

The hit-and-miss DigiTimes, a Taiwanese trade publication, Friday reported that Apple is expected to cut back on iPad mini display orders in the third quarter of 2013 as it gears up to manufacture a second-generation iPad mini.

According to the publication's supply chain sources, AU Optronics' (AUO) shipments of panels for the iPad mini are expected to decrease from four million units in the first quarter of 2013 to 2.5-2.8 million units in the second.

AUO is also expected to see more order cuts going into the third quarter - not due to weak demand, but because it's facing manufacturing issues so Apple is now expected to buy its iPad mini panels mainly from rival LG Display, which is also a rumored supplier of Retina-grade screens for the second-generation iPad mini...

Initial budget iPhone volumes could be modest

Look, DigiTimes is far from being accurate, but this Asian trade publication is nevertheless well-connected and occasionally accurate. According to its Friday report, Apple could initially launch a rumored less-pricey iPhone in small volumes, pegged at no more than three million units during its first quarter of availability. The publication speculates Apple could release the budget iPhone in small volumes in order to "test market response"...

iPad mini reportedly accounted for over 60% of Apple’s tablet sales last quarter

The iPad mini has been extremely successful for Apple since it launched late last year. How successful? Well according to a new report, it accounted for more than 60% of the 19.5 million tablets the company sold last quarter.

Apple's iPad sales showed significant growth last quarter–they were nearly double what they were during the same 3-month period last year. And a lot of industry watchers have attributed the jump to the mini's popularity...

Supply chain report says production of 5th gen iPad to start in July-August

As we move into mid-April, the odds of seeing Apple unveil a new product this spring continue to dwindle. It feels like we're getting close enough to its June developer conference, that any major announcements could wait until then.

There is, however, still a rumor floating around that Apple has plans for an iPad event later this month. But according to a new supply chain report, that's not going to happen, as 5th gen iPads won't go into production until the summer...

Apple reportedly cutting iPad mini shipments next quarter, new model coming?

There's a new report out of China this morning, claiming that Apple is cutting shipments of its iPad mini next month. The cut is said to be a 20% reduction, with steeper cuts likely happening in the latter part of the second quarter.

While the folks on Wall Street will probably try to spin this into an 'Apple is doomed' story, despite the fact that there's evidence that the mini is selling very well, the consensus seems to be that it's preparing to launch a new model...
