Google releases Spotlight Stories, an impressive 360-degree movie app for iPhone

Originally released on Android back in the fall of 2013, Google's 360-degree spherical video app called Spotlight Stories has arrived on the iPhone as a free of charge download.

Based on the technology originally developed by Motorola's Advanced Technology And Products division ahead of Google's 2011 purchase of the handset maker, Spotlight Stories uses a variety of advanced technologies to deliver cool-looking animated stories in the palm of your hand, including 3D and 2D animation, 360-degree spherical video, sound sphere audio and various sensor fusion techniques.

YouTube app updated with support for fullscreen vertical videos

Google's YouTube updated its iOS client today, bringing the app to version 10.28. The update brings about two major enhancements: support for fullscreen playback of vertical videos and push notifications.

The former is fairly significant. Users can now view vertically-filmed videos in fullscreen when in portrait mode—a big improvement over previous versions, which would shrink content between two black bars.

Apple pulls Nest products from its website and retail stores

Apple has stopped selling the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect smoke alarm online and in its retail stores, reports Mashable. A search for the products on Apple's website now redirects customers to HomeKit-compatible devices.

The move comes a month after Apple debuted HomeKit, a platform that aims to streamline communication between iOS devices and smart home accessories. Among the compatible products available at launch was the ecobee3 thermostat.

Google Maps gaining a cool new feature to revisit all the places you’ve explored

Google yesterday announced a new feature for users of its mapping service which makes it easy and fun to reminisce about the places you've explored with Google Maps.

Currently available on desktop and Android, the “Your Timeline” feature lets you revisit any place you’ve been on a given day, month or year.

Your Timeline is private and visible only to you.

As a bonus, if you use Google's new Photos mobile app, available free of charge in the App Store, it'll show you the photos you took when viewing a specific day.

Google finally updates Chrome for iOS with swipe to navigate

File this one under the “better late than never” drawer. It only took like nearly two years since iOS 7's debut but Google has at long last given users of its Chrome for iOS browser the ability to swipe right or left to navigate backward or forward.

The iPhone and iPad browser, now bumped to version 44.0.2403.65, also brings stability improvements and bug fixes while laying the groundwork for another major feature addition: Physical Web integration in the Notification Center's Today view.

Google’s Inbox app gains enhanced snoozing features for certain types of emails

Inbox, a gesture-driven email app for the iPhone and iPad by the Gmail team which was born out of Google's acquisition of Sparrow, was updated on the App Store today with enhanced snooze options for package tracking updates, restaurant and event reservations, calendar invites and a couple other types of emails.

The feature makes it easy to snooze an email message to the day before the event, knowing your email will come back at just the right time. These enhanced snoozing capability is in addition to custom snooze times which were introduced back in March.

The next time you use Google Search on your iPhone, you may notice a brand new “Purchase on Google” button, a feature that has been rumored for several months and confirmed today at the company's presser in New York City.

According to Venture Beat, it will let consumers purchase items directly from ads in Google search results using the payment information linked to their Google account.

Google has updated it Newsstand iOS client (formerly Google Currents) in the App Store with much-needed support for digital magazines available on the Play Store.

The new version has arrived shortly after Apple released the iOS 8.4 software update for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad which, among other perks, brings out support for Made for iBooks content on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Google Play Newsstand 3.2 also includes improvements to the Highlights feature and the usual performance and bug fixes.

Google on Friday released a brand new iOS application in the App Store. Called Ivy and available free of charge, the app is being described as an experimental big number calculator for the iPhone and iPad.

Dedicated calculator apps are a dime a dozen these days so what's so special about Ivy, you might ask?

According to Google, Ivy takes advantage of what's referred to as exact rational arithmetic, basically a precision math technique which lets the app handle arbitrary precision with ease.

Google Maps for iPhone and iPad now sports revamped public transport directions while adding new choices for alternate routes and real-time data about your arrival time.

Newly added sharing features include options to post Google Maps locations to Facebook and send map URLs to your Facebook Messenger friends. There's also a brand new image gallery which presents various photos of a location in a grid view.
