Google Now-like voice search in the desktop Chrome browser is definitely one of the easily overlooked Google I/O 2013 announcements. There's no denying that it makes a hell of a lot of sense to unify Google's voice search experience, no matter what device or operating system people happen to be using.

Having recently added Google Now to its native Search app on iOS devices, the Internet giant has now enabled very similar conversational voice search capabilities in the latest build of its Chrome desktop browser for Mac and Windows...

Online Apple Store gets Father’s Day revamp

After being down for nearly four hours, Apple last night tweaked its online Apple Store with a cleaner look and Father's Day gift promotion.

Gone are the navigation columns on the left and right sides to make room for product teasers that now occupy the entire width of the page.

As part of the redesign, key product hubs (the Mac, iPad, iPhone and iPod) are now lined up horizontally across the store's top and the images are now larger. And because Father's Day is drawing near, Apple now prominently features its iPhone 5 and iPads on the store’s homepage...

Xbox One unveiled: Apple should be worried

Today's the new Xbox day. After Sony on February 20 revealed its PlayStation 4 without actually showing anything in way of the hardware, the Windows giant during a special event at its Redmond headquarters announced a next-generation Xbox console dubbed the Xbox One. The system is billed as an "all-in-one entertainment system" which promises to “put you at the center of a new generation of the living room.”

Key features include a built-in Blu-ray drive, Skype, voice input and live TV functionality, the new gamepad and an enhanced Kinect camera sensor with 1080p resolution. On the surface, the device appears to pack in more advanced features than Sony's PS4 while sporting useful set-top box functionality.

Digging deeper, the One wants to replace your Apple TV, Roku, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation and any similar box by becoming the only box your TV set really needs. And yes, it indeed has what it takes to become the center of your living room. Go past the fold for the full breakdown...

Apple posts opening statements from Senate hearing on tax evasion

Apple CEO Tim Cook, along with the company's finance boss Peter Oppenheimer and Tax Operations head Phillip Bullock, earlier this morning took the witness table at a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill to face U.S. senators who grilled the three men on Apple's offshore tax practices.

This also means today was the day many Apple bloggers got to become experts on tax reform. We live-blogged the whole thing, but if you had better things to do than sift through the back and forth between Apple execs and senators John McCain and Carl Levin, Apple's got you covered.

Intel hires former Apple exec to head ‘smart devices’ team

ZAGG launches backlit Cover and Folio iPad mini keyboards

Accessory maker ZAGG today announced a pair of Bluetooth-powered backlit keyboard products for Apple's iPad mini. The ZAGGkeys Cover and Folio are both ultra-thin, pack in Bluetooth wireless connectivity and sport a patented hinge system that allows for up to 135-degree viewing angles and can reverse the device for a one-piece reading and playing mode.

As for the form factor, the Cover is just 6.3mm thick versus 6.9mm for the Folio. Both offer backlit keys in seven color options and three lighting levels and a battery that keeps them going for up to three months each of normal use...

Apple CEO Tim Cook takes the witness table at a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has been summoned to testify in a Senate hearing on offshore tax practices, now has to do something no other Apple CEO did before him: take the witness table at a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill.

Apple ahead of the hearing published a 17-page written testimony which details its push for a fair tax reform: it should be revenue neutral, Apple writes, eliminate all corporate tax expenditures, lower corporate income tax rates and implement a reasonable tax on foreign earnings that allows free movement of capital back to the U.S.

It's not clear why the U.S. Senators singled out Apple as many other companies don't repatriate the money earned overseas due to the steep 35 percent tax. It's important to note that what Apple and others are doing isn't illegal. Moreover, Apple is compelled to do what is in both their and their shareholders' best interest.

Here's another next-generation iPhone concept, one that envisions a number of features unlikely to make their way into the handset. That of course didn't prevent designers Uygar Kaya and Ran Avni from dreaming up the ultimate water and dust-resistant smartphone with notification LEDs, a full HD 1,920-by-1,080 widescreen display, 13-megapixel camera, touch-sensitive volume rocker, wireless charging and front-facing stereo speakers - all encases in an ultra-slim aluminum shell...

Consumer Reports ranks Galaxy S4 its new top-rated smartphone

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, has been declared our “new top-rated smartphone” in a barrage of tests conducted by Consumer Reports, an influential U.S. magazine published monthly by Consumers Union since 1936.

Yup, that's the same publication that gave Apple's iPhone 5 a thumbs-up shortly following its September 2012 introduction only to rank it one of its worst high-end devices available on the larger U.S. carriers in its February 2013 issue. So, what Galaxy S4 features did Consumer Reports editors single out as particularly appealing?

U.S. Senators respond to Apple’s tax avoidance strategy ahead of tomorrow’s hearing

Tomorrow will be a pretty big day for Apple CEO Tim Cook, finance boss Peter Oppenheimer and Tax Operations head Phillip Bullock as the three men are scheduled to appear in front of the United States Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation and give testimony regarding the company's creative approach to tax avoidance.

Apple ahead of the hearing published a lengthy document on its web site which pushes for tax reform on argument that America's tax system undermines the nation's competitiveness in the "digital economy" because the current tax code was written for the "industrial era." As expected, some U.S. senators beg to differ and think Apple is just being creative in its tax avoidance strategy.

This is bound to get more complicated when Tim Cook & Co. find themselves in hot water explaining to U.S. Senators how the company sidesteps U.S. taxes. Get your popcorn out...
