AT&T plans to allow developers to pay for users’ data

In an interesting move, AT&T plans to allow developers to pay for users' data, when users are using the developer's app, reports the WSJ. AT&T's network and technology head John Donovan told the WSJ in an interview at MWC 2012 that the service will be similar to a toll-free 1-800 number.

The move will surely be interesting, letting a user use an app without any data being charged to them whatsoever. Donovan says AT&T hopes to roll out the new service within the next year...

Judge orders AT&T to pay $850 to customer over data throttling

When AT&T introduced its new tiered data plans in 2010, it only kept the unlimited plan for original iPhone owners who didn't choose to join a new plan. As time passed, AT&T announced in July of 2011 that they would begin throttling unlimited users who fell under the top 5% of heaviest data users. On average, it takes around 10GB to reach the top 5%.

However, over the last few months, many users have reported AT&T is throttling their unlimited data plan when they're only at 2GB of data used. A southern Californian man took action and sued AT&T in small claims court. A judge ruled in the customer's favor, who was awarded $850...

Ask Jeff Season 02: Episode 01 – Finding the Secret

Do you have a jailbreak related question that you've just been dying to find an answer to? Do you want to discuss all things Apple with the folks at iDB? If so, then be sure to tune into the latest episode of Ask Jeff.

In the first episode of the year, Jeff tackles questions regarding the rumored Apple Television, the iPhone 2G, the best jailbreak tweak for the iPhone, Cydia errors on refreshing, and much, much, much more...

Why Apple won’t give the iPhone or iPad an LTE radio. Yet.

Right, I'm going to come right out and say this before I go any further: I'm going to get a lot of stick for this, and the rest of the iDB team thinks that I've lost my mind, but I'm going to write this anyway. I don't think the iPad or iPhone is going to get an LTE radio. At least, not yet.

Now I know this flies in the face of what we are being told by just about everyone, including a very recent article by the Wall Street Journal. The general consensus is that Apple will indeed bring an iPad 3 to market during the coming weeks, and that said iPad 3 will be the first Apple device to come packed with an LTE radio for hooking up to super-fast 4G networks.

I, however, think you're all wrong. Here's why...

The WSJ says LTE iPad 3 is a go for Verizon and AT&T

One of the most controversial rumors regarding the upcoming iPad 3 has been whether or not the tablet will feature 4G technology. While countries like the US and Canada have growing LTE networks, others won't see the tech for at least a year.

Tonight, the Wall Street Journal seemingly puts an end to the speculation. The world-renown newspaper is reporting that it has confirmed that both Verizon and AT&T flavored iPad 3s will include the next-generation wireless technology...

AT&T’s shared data plan close to launching?

>

We've known about AT&T's new data plan that would allow users to share data between their iPhone and iPad ever since AT&T's CEO Ralph de la Vega teased it last year. Many customers have been excited for it to launch, but there hasn't been any word on an official release date.

The plan has been rumored to launch soon, and it looks to becoming even closer according to a leaked internal screenshot from Engadget...

AT&T throttles customers who use 2GB of data but takes on new 3GB capped-users

AT&T has had a tumultuous relationship with its own customers over the last few years, with issues stemming from its lack of network capacity being exacerbated by the hugely popular iPhone being an exclusive handset to the carrier.

Data has tended to be one of the biggest sticking points for many, the lack of ability to make a phone call not withstanding. The recent change of AT&T's data plans has only managed to muddy the waters somewhat, and now things are getting even more confusing with the news that the carrier is throttling users who are on the old unlimited data plan and use 2GB of data per month.

The obvious question now is simple: why is AT&T throttling users who use 2GB of data but continues to accept new users on the updated 3GB limit plan? No, we don't know either...

AT&T Begins Throttling Unlimited Data Users Only After 2GB

AT&T announced in October of 2011 that they would begin throttling data usage for users still on an Unlimited Data Plan. Original iPhone users are the only one who have kept their unlimited plans, while newer customers on AT&T have been stuck using tiered data plans, which were just restructured last month.

In October's announcement, AT&T said they will only throttle the top 5% of data users. AT&T warns users that they will be throttled when they fall under that tier, usually passing more than 10GB of data for the month. However, things didn't seem to go that way for blogger John Cozen who only used 2GB of data before getting the notification. Cozen reached out to AT&T upset, who then responded..

80% of Smartphones Sold by AT&T Are iPhones

If you needed more proofs that the iPhone kicks ass, you may want to look at AT&T's financial results for last quarter. Even though the company had to swallow a big $4.2 billion pill for pulling out of the T-Mobile buyout, AT&T actually did pretty good.

I'll spare you the boring financial numbers, which you can access by clicking the link above, but we're just going to focus on what we really care about: iPhone sales numbers. And they are big...

Over Half of the Smartphones Verizon Sold Last Quarter Were iPhones

Verizon announced its quarterly figures for the end of 2011, with the iPhone effect in full swing for the America's largest mobile phone carrier.

Despite tough competition from both AT&T and Sprint, Verizon saw its best figures for subscriber additions for three years, with an extra 1.5 million customers now on board.

With 4.2 million iPhones reportedly shipped during the same period it isn't too far a stretch to suggest that Apple's smartphone may well have helped Verizon along in that achievement...

AT&T Announces New Data Plans

AT&T announced today new data plans for customers who take out contracts starting this coming Sunday.

The new plans replace the existing $15 and $25 plans and are built to reflect the increased amount of data AT&T's customers are apparently using. Existing customers can keep their existing plans should they wish, and all new contracts taken out from Sunday will automatically use the new plans, according to the carrier...
