Sick PwnApple Shirt!

If you're proud to be a jailbreaker then this t-shirt is for you! AppShirt is a new website, most likely created for the sole purpose of selling the PwnApple shirts. I have to say I really like the shirt. The women's version looks pretty sexy too! I know what Tina is getting for Christmas, hehe! Not sure exactly who is behind this but if I had to guess, I would think it is one the Dev Team members.

This shirt is one of 5-6 different models. My favorite one says "Dude, where is my baseband?" Totally geeky, but we love geeky, don't we? Most of the shirts are 25 Euros (about $35). Check out the site!

iPhone 3G Unlock Coming Before New Year

A new rumor is circulating about a possible software unlock for the iPhone 3G sometimes soon after Christmas. This is just a rumor so don't get too excited but it is however true that the Dev Team has been progressing a lot towards this soft unlock.

This software unlock would be only available for 3G users that are still on 01.45.00 baseband, which is the baseband of firmware 2.0. Remember when I published my firmware 2.2 jailbreak tutorial? I warned you that this method would be good only if you didn't care about a future soft unlock. Well, this future soft unlock is now coming and if you haven't followed my warning, then you won't be able to unlock.

This is pure speculation at this time as there is no real evidence of a post-Christmas unlock release. I asked MuscleNerd (key Dev Team member) about it but it didn't comment whether it was true or not.

So, what do you think? Rumor or real info?

Massive Downtime And Related Issues

Alright peeps, the blog is back up after about 20 hours of downtime which was due to a file server issue. No need to say that I am extremely pissed at my hosting company!

This downtime came at the worst time as we were rolling out some new features on the blog that will report to you all new iPhone apps and even better, all apps on sale in the App Store. I know that some of you already noticed the new features as I received a few congratulation emails, which is always very nice!

The server is up and running but I wouldn't be surprised if we encountered more issues and I apologize in advance for that. I also apologize to our RSS feeds subscribers who may have seen the same posts several times. This is due to me fucking up some stuff while rolling out the new features. This may happen again in the future but I am aware of it and I am doing my best to avoid it.

Sorry for the trouble and thank you for your understanding.

iPhonely yours,

Sebastien

Fuzzyshot – Photo Uploading & Sharing

I admit it - I'm an iPhone photo-holic.  I'm addicted to taking photos with my iPhone.   And the site I use to upload to from my iPhone is Flickr.  However, Flickr does not have a full-featured iPhone app and many apps that can upload to Flickr are very basic.

That's where Fuzzyshot Photo Blog [iTunes link] comes in.  Although users of Fuzzyshot will definitely benefit, new users can easily create an account right on your iPhone.  And the app can do just about anything the web version does.  You simply snap your photo, set your post title and comment, select public or private and whether you want your photo geotagged or not.  You can also easily e-mail your photo straight from the app.

Browsing other people's Fuzzyshot pictures is also easy in the app.  The most recent pictures are featured in your feed (so if you don't want your family's pictures spread across the internet, you should select private) and you can also check out the most viewed and most discussed pictures in the last 24 hours.  You also get a unique web address as well as an RSS feed for your photos.

I had never heard of Fuzzyshot before reviewing this app, but it appears that it has a well-established photo blogging community.  If you want EASY photo uploading take a look at Fuzzyshot.  It's free to download and free to sign up.

Find Text On Any Web Page With “Find In Page” App

On my daily browsing of new Cydia applications, I came across an app called "Find In Page". Reading the description of the app, I wasn't really sure what was the purpose of it. But then, I saw a screenshot and it totally made sense. Now that I think about it, I'm kinda retarded for not figuring out what this app was about just by reading its name...

As its name suggests, Find In Page is an application that will help you find any text on any web page in Safari. This is a feature I've been expecting for a while so I didn't think twice about installing this application and putting it to the test.

Installing Find In Page will not add any icon to your springboard but instead, it will add a bookmark called "Find In Page" in your Safari bookmarks. Now every time you visit a page in Safari and you're looking for a specific word, simply open your bookmarks and tap "Find In Page". This will bring up a window asking you to type the text you're looking for.

In this example, we're looking for the word "ringtone" in the post that I wrote yesterday about Audiko. Tap OK and it will then tell you how many results were found.

Again, tap OK to acknowledge the amount of matches found and it will then give you a version of the page you're looking at with all the words you're looking for highlighted in yellow.

This is a very powerful feature when you're looking for a specific word on a long web page. No doubt that I will be using this app from time to time.

However, I wish the developer of this app had pushed it a little further and added the ability to go to the "next" match found or "previous" match found, just like your web browser (or any text editing software) can do on your computer.

Have you downloaded this application yet? If so, please tell us what you think in the comments.

iPhone Ringtone Maker/Search Engine Audiko Is Great

I am not a ringtone person. If you ask me, I think it is very tacky to have the music of the latest Fallout Boys (I hate them) as a ringtone. More obnoxious than that would be a ringtone yelling "HEY EVERYONE COME SEE HOW LAME I AM". Enough for the bagging... The ringtone on my iPhone is the stock "old phone" ringtone. Not very original but it works great. Anyways, this post is about Audiko, so let's talk about it.

From what I can tell, Audiko is a Russian site that does 2 things for you:

ringtone search engine ringtone maker

Before going into the details, I want to let you know that Audiko is 100% free and you don't even have to register to use it.

Audiko as a ringtone search engine

Like any search engine, you type your query in the search box and the site will return a few results. When I saw that, I assumed that it would only have a few ringtones for Madonna, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and other uber commercial bands like that but after putting it to the test for 5 minutes, Audiko would find ringtones for every band I was looking for, even  for some obscur French reggae band. I probably tried 20 different bands and it found something for me every single time. I was impressed. The only band it didn't find was NTM, a French hip hop band of the 90's, which by the way just got back together (and they rock rap!).

Once you find what you're looking for, you can listen to the ringtone and you can either download it in mp3 to your desktop or even better, you can download it in m4r, which is the "official" format for iPhone ringtones. After downloading the ringtone, simply add it to your ringtone folder in iTunes, sync your iPhone, and you're done!

For each song, they have several ringtones at different time in the song. For example, they have a ringtone for the first 30 seconds of the song, and they may have other ringtones for let's say the chorus or the first verse.

You won't only find ringtones of songs but pretty much anything you could think of. You can also find ringtones made of movie quote. My favorite one is the Anchorman ringtone saying "I love scotch. Scotch scotch scotch. Here goes down. Down into my belly. Mm mm mm".

Creating your own ringtone

Making your own ringtone is as easy as it could possibly be. Upload the song you want to make a ringtone of. Then choose what part of the song you want (you are limited to 30 seconds). Click "create ringtone" and you're done.

After creating the ringtone, it will ask you to add a title for the song, the album and the artist. After that, you will be able to download your ringtone and sync it to your iPhone.

I created my own ringtone from Linval Thompson's Six Babylon. I will not use this ringtone on my phone but anyone looking for Linval Thompson on Audiko will be able to download it, which is why Audiko has such a great variety of ringtones. The secret is that their ringtones are user-created.

Audiko is an excellent site and as I said above, it's totally free. Give it a try and post your own ringtones in the comments section.

PasteBud Finally Brings Copy/Paste To The iPhone

Ok, I was wrong! I thought that the rumor circulating yesterday about copy/paste coming to the iPhone was just BS but it's here, and it works.

As I explained in my previous post, Pastebud allows easy copy/pasting to the iPhone through a combination of javascript bookmarks and web services. But let me tell you right now, it's not full on copy/paste like you would want it. Pastebud is just a workaround, that will do the trick but it has a few limitations.

First things first. To install Pastebud, you have to visit the site from your iPhone or iPod Touch and bookmark a couple pages: one for copy, one for paste. Like all workarounds, you have to manually edit the bookmarks to make them work on your device. The edit trick is clearly explained and is easy to do, assuming you know how to use your iPhone...

Once this is done, you have to tap the "your secret pastebud address" on the site, which will open your mail app and prompt you to send the email to the already filled in email address. I'm not sure about that, but I think this is to send an email to Pastebud servers to register your iPhone. After doing that, you will automatically receive an email telling you that you are registered (check your spam folder to see this email).

Now the fun begins and you are fully ready to copy/paste like a champ! Or kinda... When you have text that you want to copy, simply go to your bookmarks and tap "Copy". This will change the web page you are currently visiting to a text-only version where you can highlight the desired text (see image below).

At this point, you can either tap the top left button for copying the text to an email, or you can tap "copy" to move the text to the clipboard. Let's have a look at how to copy the text to your mail app...

As you can see on the image below, copying the text automatically inserts "pasted from my iPhone" with a link to Pastebud's website. This is really gay (no offense, Guy ;) and can be avoided if you choose to use the paid version of Pastebud, but we'll get to this.

Pasting the copied text to any box on the web is just as easy. After selecting the text and hitting "Copy," simply browse to any site you want to paste to and hit the "PASTE" bookmarklet. Pastebud loads the page in its webapp again, and you click the "PASTE HERE" box to, well, paste there.

Once the text is pasted, a somewhat annoying message pops up asking you if you want to purchase the full version of Pastebud for $5.

You can also copy/paste from an email but it's a bit cumbersome as you have to forward the email to a private email address at Pastebud, which will then return a link to your email's text on Pastebud's servers. This link will then take you to a web page, where you can now copy and paste any part of the message just as we described before. Yes, I told you, it's cumbersome!

All in all, Pastebud is a great workaround for copy/pasting text but as we could see, it has some limitations. For example, you will not be able to copy/paste a URL onto your friend's wall in the Facebook app. What annoys me is that Pastebud automatically inserts a link to its website when you paste the text. On the other hand, I understand that the developer wants you to buy the full version so he can make a little money, which is totally legitimate.

Have you guys tried Pastebud yet? If so, please tell us about your experience in the comments.

Free iPhone Skins GiveAway

The guys over at Infectious emailed me to let me know that they would like to give away iPhone skins to the first 3 people to comment on this post. If you don't know about Infectious, you may want to check their products. They make adhesive skins for cars, laptops, and in our case, for iPhones.

What's really cool about it is that you can choose from top notch designs that are all made by renown artists. I haven't tried their iPhone skins but they are said to be easy to apply and easy to take off.

Unlike UniqueSkins, which I reviewed a few weeks ago, you can't create your own skin on the fly, however, you can submit your artwork and it might be approved to be sold on the site. Pretty cool, huh?

So we have 3 skins to give away for free to the the first 3 people that will leave a comment on this post. When you leave your comment, don't lie about your email address or else there is no way we'll be able to get in touch with you.

For more info about these artsy skins, hop over to Infectious.com.

Forget Fring, Use TruPhone

Ok, don't forget Fring yet as it is a pretty good "all-in-one" app. But if you are using Fring solely for the Skype calls feature, then you might want to give a try at TruPhone, a VoIP app that was the first of its kind to be approved in the App Store.

So, what's so good about TruPhone? Well, I guess the best feature of this application is that it allows you to make VoIP calls from your iPhone to any phone in the world over wifi, and most importantly you can make calls even if you are not in a wifi zone. Now I have to admit this part is a bit shady. I had a look at Truohone's website and I can't figure out how this works exactly. It doesn't say anything about 3G or Edge but it does say that you can make calls even if you don't have an Internet connection. It's confusing but it still sounds great!

Fring allows you to do pretty much the same (and actually more) but the problem with Fring is that the app doesn't let you make VoIP calls over 3G or Edge, unless you implemented my Fring hack, of course... It seems that TruPhone is making this possible, without having to hack anything.

Let's have a look at what TruPhone can do for you:

Cheap international calls

The Truphone iPhone app routes iPhone calls over the Internet which can save you loads of money on international calls from your home country and on calls when you're abroad. You can look at the rates here. Calling a landline in my home country (France) is $0.06/minute but calling a cellphone there is $0.30/minute. All calls in the US are $0.06/minute.

Use Truphone Anywhere

If you're not online Truphone Anywhere can still route your call over the internet. So now you can make cheap VoIP calls even when you're not connected to a Wi-Fi network. How does that work? I'm not sure...

Free calls worldwide

Calls to other connected Truphone users are FREE, worldwide. So if you and your friends all download Truphone, you can call each other for FREE, wherever you are in the world!

Know who's online

A new feature lets you know which of your Truphone contacts is online. It's great news if you want to make FREE Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi calls on your iPhone because calls between connected users are always FREE Worldwide.

Receive calls for free

You can receive FREE Truphone calls whenever you're connected to a Wi-Fi network.

iPod Touch users for once shouldn't feel left aside. If you have a headset with a microphone you can also use this great app on your iTouch, which means that you can turn your iPod Touch into a phone!!!

Truphone is free and you may click here to download Truphone for iPhone or Truphone for iPod Touch.

One question still lingers in my mind though... Is AT&T ok with that?

Copy/Paste Coming To The iPhone This Friday. Is It For Real?

We've heard that before and we've had our share of disappointment about the copy/paste options on the iPhone but this time it seems that it's finally around the corner. Best of all, you don't need to hack your iPhone or even install applications. What? So how does it work?

Unlike other approaches, it works with the two apps that matter most, Mail and Safari, and gets around Apple's onerous App Store terms through a clever combination of javascript bookmarks and web services.

This new service is called PasteBud and as you can see in this video, it works using two bookmarks in Safari. The first bookmark prepares and loads the page you are viewing, and let's you select the text you want to copy with your finger. From there, you can open your Mail app and paste the text in there or you can even paste the text in the text field of another web page if you want to.

Looks pretty sweet, eh? Well, don't get too excited as I believe this is BS. But you know me, I'm always the devil's advocate... I do hope I am wrong on this one as I would love to finally be able to copy/paste on my iPhone. My biggest disappointment remains that Apple still hasn't made this available and that we have to jump through hoops and holes to get something that should have been on the iPhone since June 27, 2007.

What do you think? Real? Fake?

ZiPhone.org is For Sale. Goodbye ZiPhone, I Will Miss You

Zibri, creator of ZiPhone just announced on his blog that ZiPhone.org is for sale. Since the birth of his child last month, Zibri is obviously busy with his family, which I totally understand.

For those of you who are not familiar with the ZiPhone, it was the first jailbreaking software developed to make the jailbreaking process a child play. I mean, ZiPhone was and still remains my favorite jailbreaking tool. Hands down! ZiPhone worked under firmware 1.x but wasn't updated for firmware 2.x earlier this year.

So why was ZiPhone my favorite jailbreaking tool? For one, it was the only software that never crashed on me. But most importantly, it was so easy to use that a caveman could have done it... You simply had to download Ziphone, install, plug your iPhone, click jailbreak and wait a few seconds. *Sigh*, I miss those days...

So now the domain name is for sale. If you're a little bit into Internet Marketing, that might be interesting for you. The website has a PR6 and countless backlinks. I would love to buy this domain name but I don't think I have enough in the bank right now to afford it. If you're interested, you'll have to spend $50 on the front end, just to be able to bid on the domain name. The highest bidder will then get it.

Below is a copy of what Zibri wrote on his blog:

It was an incredible ride, guys, and I'm sincerely grateful to everybody who made this happen. As some of you may know, from the 7th of November 2008 I'm a father. All my efforts are now focused on my family then, later, I'll start some other project maybe related with the iPhone, maybe not. So, from now the ziphone.org domain (Pagerank 6 on Google) is FOR SALE. Here's how the sale works: Go to the donation page, donate $50 and write your buy offer in the donation description free text field. At the end of the sale the highest bid will get the domain. Direct emails will not count as bids. If by the end of the sale the maximum bid will not meet my minumum requirement, all $50 donations will be refunded and the sale won't happen. Sale result and winning bidder will appear on this site. The sale will end on 20st January 2009. If the winner won't pay the bid by the 10th of February 2009, the 2nd higher bidder will be the winner. Namaste, Zibri Hint: There is a banner on the right side of this site. That banner links to a site which evaluate other sites. Bids lower than 1/3 of the "Net Worth" will be rejected. The daily ads revenue on that site is pretty accurate. And so is the daily pageview (average in the last months). Happy bidding.

If you guys are interested, hop over to ZiPhone.org and make your bid.

As for me, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Zibri for his involvement in the iPhone community. You did an amazing job and always stood for yourself, even under criticism from the other guys (psst, that's the Dev Team). Good luck to you and your family!

Songbird Remote Controls Playlists from your iPhone or iPod Touch

One of the great strengths of Songbird, a jukebox app intended to serve as a more open-ended iTunes killer, is its Firefox-like extensibility. The 779Media group jumps out of the gate with a remote-control application for iPhones and iPod touch devices that, while simple in functionality, does give you basic play/pause/back/forward control from anywhere your home wireless network reaches.

Slydial: Great, if you can get it...

I found this great iPhone app last night called Slydial. It lets you leave a voicemail on someone's mobile phone without bothering the person to answer. So, the recipient will not get a ringtone but will get your voicemail message. And it's free!
