iPhone Nano Rumored To Be Announced At MacWorld

So there are been lots of rumors lately about the launch of an iPhone Nano and these rumors appear to be more and more likely to be true...

According to iPhone Alley:

We just received word from a reliable source within Apple that they are in fact working on an iPhone Nano, and that it will be announced at Macworld. The source says that the iPhone Nano will most likely be similar in form-factor to the iPod touch, and will probably not include 3G.

What's your take on it?

Wooden iPhone 3G

Gizmodo posted today a really cool picture of an iPhone 3G wooden case. Clearly not your typical iPhone accessory but I find this wooden case very interesting. There is no info about pricing and where you can probably find out more from iCustom, assuming you speak Russian... who doesn't?

Hacking The iPhone 3G… The Dev Team Way

Dev Team members PlanetBeing, MuscleNerd, and Pytey were speaking last week at the 25c3 conference in Germany to present how they hacked the iPhone. It's a very "geeky" video but it's worth your time if that's your cup of tea.

Some interesting facts is that at least 180 people with Apple corporate IPs update their phones using the Dev Team’s software on a regular basis. No doubt these guys at Apple are working on countering the jailbreak and unlock tools.

$99 iPhones For Sale!

Walmart was rumored to sell cheap iPhone for $99 but that was just a rumor. Walmart will sell iPhones at a $3 discount from the usual price.

However, AT&T is now selling $99 8GB iPhones. Don't get too excited... For that price you only get a refurnished iPhone but hey, if you couldn't afford the full price, that might be the right time for you to buy an iPhone. You can also get a 16GB for $199.

This offer is available through December 31st and to take advantage of it, you will have to sign a 2-year contract with AT&T.

Hurry up before they sell out!

Animoto Is My New Favorite iPhone App

Maybe some of you already know Animoto, this website that let's you upload images, music, and creates cool slideshows in a matter of minutes. Don't misunderstand me, Animoto is not one of these cheap slideshow thing like Rock You or Slide. Using their patent-pending Artificial Intelligence developed to think like an actual editor & director, the resulting video has the emotional impact of a movie trailer and the visual energy of a music video.

Animoto [iTunes Link]  is now available in the AppStore, letting you create animated slideshows directly from your iPhone, and believe me, this app delivers!

You can start creating a new slideshow right after launching the app as no registration is required. Select 8 to 16 photos from your library, arrange them at your liking, select a song from Animoto's library and tap "create". It takes about 15 second to upload each image to Animoto's servers. Once all the images are uploaded, Animoto will start creating the slideshow, which takes a few minutes. At this point, you can quit the app, make yourself a sandwich and come back a few minutes later.

The newly created video slideshow will be available for viewing. You can then edit it or share it with someone, which is the whole point of this app. It will send an email to whoever you want to share the slideshow with, with a link to your video on Animoto's website. From there, you can do a bunch of things such as embedding it, uploading it to YouTube, etc...

I love this application but I do have a few feature requests... First, I would like to be able to login to my Animoto account so the videos are saved in my account. Right now, Animoto doesn't allow you to login from your iPhone so you won't be able to save these videos to your existing Animoto's account if you already have one. My guess is that this will come in the next update.

My second request is that it should be able to let you upload a song from your iPhone. The website let's you do it. You can just choose a song you have on your computer and upload it so you can use it in your slideshow. Now I believe that Apple won't let anyone access the music library on the iPhone. Besides, uploading music directly from your iPhone would take forever.

At any rates, Animoto is clearly my favorite app of the week! I was already sold on the website, so it wasn't too hard to make me an adept of the iPhone app... You can download Animoto from the AppStore for free here.

Here is a slideshow that I quickly made for demo purposes. If you have created your own slideshow, share it with us in the comments!

Flash Finally Coming to Your iPhone With iMobileCinema

It's completely unofficial and still very buggy, but yes, you finally can get Flash on your iPhone... kinda. iMobileCinema is a new app available for free in Cydia that aims at being the "Flash for iPhone" application.

iMobileCinema is in fact a Safari plugin for playing internet videos on your iPhone or iPod touch. I personally gave it a try on several websites and it worked pretty well.

After installing iMobileCinema, simply visit any webpage that has Flash content and it will show you a big "play" triangle on top of videos so you know you can play it.

Is iMobileCinema a Flash Player for Safari?

The answer is no. Even though iMobileCinema acts like a Flash plugin, it can't play Flash content such as Flash games and ads. It only plays Flashvideos that are embedded in a webpage.

iMobileCinema can't decode Flash files (.swf) but it ca decode Flash Videos (.flv). It decodes and plays the flash video in real-time while it's buffering.

According to iMobileCinema's blog, they are also coming up with some cool new features...

Some live broadcast sites are using rtmp protocol to deliver videos, e.g., mtv.com, hulu.com. We'll try to support the protocol later. And playing embedded mp3, like singsbox.com, is a good idea and we'll try to support it too.

iMobileCinema is available via Cydia. You will have to add this source to Cydia: http://d.imobilecinema.com

Here is a short demo of iMobileCinema in action...

Successful iPhone 3G Unlock

iPhone 2G jailbreak - checked iPhone 3G jailbreak - checked iPhone 2G Unlock - checked iPhone 3G Unlock - NOW CHECKED!

Earlier this week, I told you that the Dev Team was going to release its iPhone 3G soft unlock on New Year's Eve and today, MuscleNerd, leading member of our favorite hackers team broadcast live on Qik, showing the first "public" iPhone 3G soft unlock.

The live broadcast was about 4 minutes long and was not about fluff and BS. MuscleNerd went straight to the point switching SIM cards, running the unlock tool and showing the newly unlocked iPhone successfully operate under T-Mobile.

If you look at the video below, you will see that MuscleNerd is actually performing the unlock running some code directly from his computer but you won't have to do that once the 3G unlock becomes available to the public on December 31st. Indeed, you will be able to download and easily install the unlock method directly from Cydia.

Elegance Is My New Favorite iPhone Theme

I am not a big "theme guy" but from time to time, I find some very cool themes and I like to feature them on the blog. That is the case of a new theme that is available since this morning in Cydia called Elegance.

I had to manually customize this theme a little bit as it was created by an Italian designer and most of the icons were in Italian, which prevented my iPhone to recognize most of them and display them correctly. For example, the "Maps" icon is named Maps.png but it is named Mappe.png in Italian, and my iPhone didn't show it as it was looking for the English version.

To edit some of the icon names, I plugged my iPhone to my computer and launched iPhoneBrowser. In a couple minutes, I renamed the 5-6 icons that I needed... and voila!

Elegance includes a lock screen, custom slider, wallpaper, tons of icons, SMS background and more. As you can see from the image above, Elegance really deserves that name. I think it is a beautiful theme that might get to stay on my iPhone for a while...

Extend The Battery Life Of Your iPhone Up To 12 Times

Feeling bummed by the short battery life of your iPhone? Well, PhD student Atif Shamim of Calton University in Canada might have the solution for you... almost... Shamim has created an amazing new invention to prolong battery life in iPhones and Blackberries by getting rid of all the wires used to connect the electronic circuits with the antenna.

The invention involves a packaging technique to connect the antenna with the circuits via a wireless connection between a micro-antenna embedded within the circuits on the chip.

“This has not been tried before — that the circuits are connected to the antenna wirelessly. They’ve been connected through wires and a bunch of other components. That’s where the power gets lost,” Mr. Shamim said.

A paper about the device has won an award at the European Wireless Technology Conference, and Shamin has filed for a patent in both the US and Canada.

There is no indication about when we might see this new technology on our favorite device, but I am pretty sure Apple is looking into it as we speak. With the recent battery issues I've been having, I am really looking forward this technology being implemented on the iPhone and other devices. My bet however is that it will take a while.

Monopoloy for iphone? Is it better than the real thing?

Let's see, in EA's version of the all time best selling board game, there aren't hundreds of pieces to clean up, in fact there's none. There's also no uncle Jerry pretending to pay for park place, but secretly only slipping in 200$. And forget about someone taking the car, you can be the car anytime you want. Uh yeah, monopoly for the iphone is way better.

For $7.99 you can now take the fun, family favorite with you, wherever you go. It's the updated Here & Now, World Edition, so if you haven't played one of the newer versions yet, this is the perfect way to try it.

After downloading, and launching, the app quickly loads to a beautiful, yet simple menu screen. This will stay the theme of the entire game, gorgeous graphics, simple controls. If you're not hooking up to play with your buddies on wifi, or checking high scores, your gonna hit play game and decide whether to play against the computer, or up to 3 friends in play and pass style.

From here on out it's smooth sailing. Obviously I'm not going to walk you through monopoly step by step, but this game is a twin in gameplay to it's card board counter part.

The experience is so pleasant. You shake the iphone to roll the dice, it moves your piece for you, and always asks you if you want to buy the property you land on if it's available. And if not, it automatically pays out your debts, making game times significantly slower than the board game. My only small complaint in an otherwise flawless execution would be that the roll dice/transaction/menu buttons at the bottom could be a tad bit larger so my chubby fingers don't have any problems hitting them every time.

But nonetheless tremendous stability and speed coupled with great graphics and animations make this game a for sure keeper to any fans of the genre.

You can pick up and play for a while, leave, and come back and pick up right where you left off. It's the perfect time killer.

It looks like Electronic Arts has done it again, and has made Monopoly Here & Now, World Edition a great addition to anyone's exclusive springboard collection.
