Why Do People Think Jailbreaking Can Brick Your iPhone? [Rant]

This week has gone by faster than usual. Perhaps the Apple event made the days come and go quicker but nevertheless it's Friday. This is the day I've been known to spout off about a topic that I feel needs further attention. This week I go after those who feel the need to warn people that jailbreaking your iPhone can "brick" it.

I recently posted an article announcing the recent jailbreak of my iPhone 4. Having been away from the dark side since my iPhone 3G, I wasn't sure what to expect from the process.

Stupid Criminal Leaves His iPhone at the Crime Scene

When we wrote an article last month about police being able to use iPhone data to help them further investigations this wasn't quite what we meant. An Alabama burglar is facing possible revocation of probation after he left his iPhone at the house he was robbing.

The Times Daily reports that the homeowners noticed the iPhone and told investigators that the device didn't belong to any of the residents and it was seized as evidence. Franklin County District Attorney, Joey Rushing, stated the following:

Apple’s iOS is the 3rd Most Popular Internet Platform

Have you ever wondered how popular iOS devices are amongst internet plaforms? Well you can stop wondering because Computer World has the details that show Apple's operating system is currently 3rd amongst all platforms.

iOS devices of course include the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad tallied up as 1.1% of all hardware that used the internet. They ousted Linux with that number which fell for the second straight month to 0.85%. Windows took first place with Mac OS coming in 2nd.

iPhoDroid for Windows Now Available

We've talked about iPhoDroid before, a port that allows you to install Android on your iPhone 2G or 3G. Up until now, iPhoDroid was only available for Mac. Sergio McFly, the developer of iPhoDroid finally got time to bring support for Windows.

This is For Those Who Are Scared to Jailbreak Their iPhone

After weeks of self debate and bugging Sebastien about the possibilities of jailbreaking my iPhone 4, I took the leap of faith Wednesday night and cracked opened my device. I must say that the whole process was unbelievably painless and took no more than 5 minutes to perform the hack and update the Cydia packages.

I used JailbreakMe to perform the procedure and I will vouch for the website any day. After 2 or 3 minutes of loading, the device was jailbroken and ready to be used. Perhaps it was the Apple aroma in the air after their event, but nevertheless having jailbroken my iPhone 4 makes it feel like launch day all over again...

Screenshots of iOS 4.1 Show HDR Photography & HD Uploading Abilities

The release of iOS 4.1 will come next week sometime but Gizmodo has gotten ahold of some screenshots that show off the new operating system's fanciest feature. As Steve Jobs announced today the new OS will enable high dynamic range photography, otherwise known as HDR.

For those who are unaware of the premise behind HDR, the feature takes multiple images to create a more colorful splash and sensation for the final product. Whether your a highly tuned photographer or just like snapping shots with your iPhone you'll be able to experience the benefits of having such an ability within your native camera app...

iTunes 10 Download Now Available

iTunes 10 is finally available for download. As we reported this morning, not only iTunes 10 comes with a new logo, but it also brings a bunch of exciting new features, like Ping, a music social network.

As always when there is a new update, you should hold on to it if you are on an unlocked or jailbroken iPhone, at least until the Dev Team gives us the go.

Is the iPod Touch For People Who Don’t Want an iPhone?

Apple's event today wasn't filled with too many surprises. The iPod Touch was beefed up in features that included many of the predicted and leaked abilities that were floating around. Mimicking nearly all of the features of the iPhone 4 makes me wonder now more than ever if the Touch is specifically designed for those who don't want an iPhone.

Adding FaceTime and Retina Display to the Touch gives it both of the best features from the iPhone 4. The speedy A4 chip will make the two devices close to equal in processing time, something that the iPhone previously ousted the Touch in considerably. So what's the difference?

iPad to Get iOS 4.2 in November

I hope you're not holding your breath on multitasking and folders for iPad because according to Steve Jobs, it won't be available until November of this year.

When Apple introduced iOS 4, they made it clear that it wouldn't be available for iPad until "this fall", so technically we're on schedule. Still, I would have expected something sooner than that.

During a live event today, Steve Jobs made a demo of iOS 4.2 for iPad. It looks good but nothing groundbreaking.

Among the new features expected in iOS 4.2, we have:

Multitasking Folders Printing - on a wireless network AirPlay - streams content to the new Apple TV Game Center Better email - unified inbox, threaded emails And more...

Underwhelming?
