New in iOS 6.1: Lockscreen music controls

Apple released iOS 6.1 beta to developers earlier today and we've been on the hunt for new interesting features ever since. iDB reader Darryl R. sent us an interesting find that isn't life changing, but still deserves a little attention.

When playing a song from the Music app, if you are on the Lockscreen and double tap the Home button, you will notice the new music controls and layout that are now consistent with the controls you find inside the Music app itself...

Concept video shows widgets the way Apple should implement them

If you've had an Android device in your hands before, you've likely noticed they usually come with widgets for just about anything. As a matter of fact, when I reviewed the Nexus 7 a few months ago, I noted that widgets were definitely one of the strong points of the tablet. Of course, jailbreakers are no strangers to widgets: Dashboard X is an example of how widgets can be implemented in a very tasteful way on iOS.

Visual and UI designer Max Rudberg recently took it upon himself to imagine another way widgets could work on iOS. The result is quite amazing, and in all honesty, I believe Apple should really take note of Rudberg's concept. Have a look for yourself...

Shake ups and shufflings: some thoughts on the new Apple

If there's one thing that really came as a surprise this month, it's certainly not the iPad mini, or any other product announcement, but the executives shake up and shuffling at Apple. SVP of Retail John Browett is gone, and that's a good thing, and really, hardly a surprise. The biggest surprise was that he was hired in the first place. The real bombshell in yesterday's abrupt announcement is the departure of SVP of iOS Software, Scott Forstall.

Although it was the biggest kick, Apple's press release also told us that Ive would now be in charge of Human Interface (aka everything design), iOS and OS X groups are now one, Maps and Siri are now part of the Internet Services unit, and Mansfield will lead the new Technologies group.

Now that we've gathered a little more information about the news and that I've had time to really soak it in, I'd like to share my thoughts on the situation, and what it all means for the new Apple...

The banned iPad mini promo video

iPad mini is the future. It's the future until May, at least. Probably more like the end of May. Or more than likely, June.

iPad mini is now the future until then.

iDownloadBlog is giving away an iPad mini

After months of rumors and leaks, the iPad mini was finally unveiled. Bigger than an iPod touch, yet smaller than a full size iPad, the mini is set to be Apple's most successful product for the holiday season. While the iPad mini will be available on November 2nd in many countries, we suspect supplies might be limited, and chances are Apple might not be able to make them fast enough to meet the demand.

Because we want to make sure you spend the holidays with an iPad mini, we decided to give one away to one lucky reader...

Shit Android fanatics say

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7huae767Rxg

Last month we showed you two absolutely hilarious videos about shit Apple fanboys say (part 2). It looks like someone took a page from that book and came up with a similar version, this time targeting Android users.

Titled "shit Android fanatics say", this video isn't quite as funny as its Apple counterpart, but I still got a good laugh out of it, and I'm sure you will too.

iPad mini event keynote now available for download as a podcast from iTunes

In case you were not able to watch the iPad mini keynote live as it was happening yesterday, Apple made the video available for streaming on its website shortly after. But for those of you who don't want to be tied to a wifi network in order to watch the keynote, you'll be happy to learn that the whole iPad mini event is now available as a podcast download from iTunes...

This is the iPad mini promo video that Apple played during today's event. While this video has been available all day on Apple's website, the company just published it on its YouTube channel. Enjoy!

Mosaic lets you create beautiful photo books from your iPhone

It's funny how things happen in life. A couple weeks ago, I was telling my wife that I would like to start putting together photo books of our daughter on a monthly basis, right from my iPhone, but without spending hours putting them up together. At the time, I told my wife that to my knowledge, there was no such app that would allow me to publish photo books in just a few minutes.

Then, as if they had heard me, the fine folks at Mosaic emailed me to let me know about their upcoming app and printing service, which lets you create beautiful printable photo books in a matter of minutes. I was definitely sold on the idea, but I still had to try it for myself.

I was sent an early release of the app, as well as a coupon code worth $26.50, which equals to $20 for the photo album, and $6.50 for shipping charges. With this loaded on my iPhone, I was really excited about the opportunity to try on this new service...
