This iMessage prank got me going for a while

Earlier this week, Jeff played a really good prank on me. As I received a message from him, I opened up the Messages application and couldn't see anything but a typing indicator. So I waited patiently for Jeff to finish typing, figuring that Messages were having yet some other issues, which could have explained why I received an alert, yet didn't see any message.

Long story short, Jeff got me pretty good, and here is how you can get your friends too...

Calendars 5 updated with simpler task creation and date showing on icon badge

If you ask me, Calendars 5 currently is the best calendar application for iOS 7. It's simple, elegant and works just as you would expect from an app that has been redesigned from the ground up for Apple's latest mobile operating system.

Today the app was updated with a couple of new features, making the app an even more solid alternative to the stock calendar application...

The never-ending worry about Apple’s future is a good thing for the company

Jean-Louis Gassée reflects on Apple and the negative press the company has been receiving, despite having products that constantly top customer ratings and sell like hot cakes:

I recently experienced a small epiphany: I think the never-ending worry about Apple’s future is a good thing for the company. Look at what happened to those who were on top and became comfortable with their place under the sun: Palm, Blackberry, Nokia…

In ancient Rome, victorious generals marched in triumph to the Capitol. Lest the occasion go to the army commander’s head, a slave would march behind the victor, murmuring in his ear, memento mori, “remember you’re mortal”.

Activation Error: how running an old iOS 7 beta version will get you in trouble

This is a typical illustration of why only developers should install a beta version of a software. In this case, I'm specifically talking about iOS 7 beta, which has been wildly popular among non developers since Apple first made it available in June.

Of course, we've tried to warn everyone that unless you're a developer, you shouldn't really mess with iOS 7 beta. Since yesterday, those that didn't take this warning seriously might have gotten themselves into trouble.

iOS 7 beta 6 was set to expire on October 6, and people who haven't updated to the GM or public release by then found out the hard way that a developer release should really be only for developers.

Many people were greeted today with a message on their iOS device saying "Activation Error - This device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program," rendering the device unusable. Activation Required...

A thought for Steve

Today marks the two year anniversary of Steve Jobs' passing. I will forever remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news. Just like his life changed my life, so did his death, and if you're reading this site on a regular basis, I'll assume that you're feeling the same way.

Steve Jobs could be called many things, but to me he'll always be a rebel, a man who's been part of more technological revolutions than anybody in this world. A man who wasn't afraid of saying "no" when saying yes could have been so much easier. A man, who inspired many people and changed so even more lives.

On this day, let's take a minute to remember Steve and read this quote from him. It's deep. It's sincere. And it's real.

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Thank you for everything, Steve.

Instagram will introduce photo and video ads in the next couple months

For those who've been following Instagram for a while, it will hardly come as a surprise that the company today announced it will start delivering ads into the feed of US users in the next couple of months.

Instagram, which was acquired by Facebook over a year ago, has yet to turn a profit. This new decision to start displaying ads on mobile devices might exactly be what the company needs to become profitable, even if it means alienating a few users in the process...

Gentlemen, start your engines: NASCAR Redline races its way into the App Store

I've never been a big fan of NASCAR but I do remember spending a big chunk of my pocket money on the arcade game Daytona USA. I specifically recall races starting with the iconic "gentlemen, start your engines" announcement.

Fastforward to today, and I'm still not a big NASCAR fan, but I can certainly appreciate some of the strategies that go into the races. The right set of brakes, tires, or suspension can actually make or break a race.

NASCAR: Redline is the first officially licensed NASCAR game to make its way in the App Store. Although you won't be in the driver seat, your role will be to ensure that every decision made is the right one in order to take your team to the victory...

Delivered! tracks your packages in a very elegant way

Imagine the scene. Your iPhone 5s has finally shipped from China and Apple has generated a UPS or FedEx tracking code for you. Of course, you eagerly refresh the courier's website to find out where exactly your precious currently is. If your like me, and I'll assume you are, you'll probably track the package a dozen times a day until it's there.

What if I told you there is a completely free and elegant way to do just that directly from your iPhone? Even better, what if it came with push notifications to let you know about every step of the delivery? That's exactly what Delivered! does...

Fingerprint sensors coming to Android devices in the next 6 months

Of course it was just a matter of time. As always, Apple wasn't first to market, but it was the first to make fingerprint sensors a popular technology that will be used in many future devices. This shift is happening barely two weeks after the iPhone 5s launched. Can't innovate my ass!

But six months from now Barrett says he will be able to choose from the latest Android models that will come equipped with a biometric sensor capable of letting him swipe his fingerprint to access a wide range of his online accounts.

That's the scenario being proactively pursued by the FIDO Alliance, a group of 48 tech companies, led by PayPal and Lenovo, hustling to implement a milestone technical standard.

This video compares the speed of every iPhone when performing common tasks such as powering off, booting up, and accessing websites via Mobile Safari. If you thought the iPhone 5S was going to be the fastest at everything, then you're up for a surprise.

Of course, this is not a life changing revelation, but it's still interesting to see how all these iPhones perform next to each other.

The only way to have a 100% secure smartphone is to not have one at all

In his review of the iPhone 5s, MG Siegler hits the nail on the head about the ridiculousness of the Touch ID pseudo hacking:

In the least surprising news of the year, hackers have already been attacking the security of the feature and have found some ways to get around it. Newsflash: the only way to have a truly, 100 percent secure smartphone is to not have one at all. Touch ID still seems like a significant security upgrade over the most-used alternative: nothing.

You can read Siegler's full "non review review" of the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s here.
