iDownloadBlog sponsors JailbreakCon 2014

I am happy to report that for the third year, iDownloadBlog is an official media sponsor of WWJC, the first (and so far only) major event dedicated to jailbreaking.

Just like the first edition of the event, WWJC 2014 will be held in San Francisco. If the location of the event is a sure thing, the date is still pending, but we're being told it could happen around April or May.

The date options are actually interesting...

The best email we’ve ever received (and some tips on how to care for your iOS device)

We receive about 3.5 tons of emails every given day here at iDB, and I have to admit that I don't get past the second sentence of 95% of them before trashing them. Then there is an actual 4.9999% that I actually read and reply to or forward to one of our editors. Finally, there is this 0.0001% of emails that really stand out. They stand out because they are intriguing, well written, funny, or even bizarre, and in some cases, they're all of the above.

This week, we received what I believe to be the best email that ever graced my inbox. It was so entertaining that instead of reading it while standing at my desk, I went downstairs, picked up my iPad mini and read the email from the comfort of my couch. I would lie if I said the idea of pouring myself a glass of Crown Royal didn't cross my mind.

It was so entertaining to me that I wanted to share it with you.

Olloclip releases 3-in-1 iPhone Macro Lens

Olloclip just released a new 3-in-1 Macro Lens for iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.

While the lenses themselves are made of coated glass multi-element optics, the barrels are made of anodized aircraft grade aluminum. As with its other lens kits, these macro lenses connect to the iPhone thanks to soft plastic material that will ensure a secure fit while preventing any damage to your iPhone.

These lenses offer three magnifications in one, allowing you to take close-up shots. The three included lenses are 7x, 14x and 21x macros...

A mixed experience with iBeacon at the Apple Store

Following this morning's report about the deployment of Apple's iBeacon technology to its 254 US retail stores, I decided to go to my local Apple Store and give it a try for myself. After agreeing to enable in-store notifications within the Apple Store app, I then drove to the Carlsbad Apple Store.

I didn't expect to be blown away by this new app/store feature, but I did expect it to work and offer a certain level of relevancy. The results were very mixed, to say the least...

Carl Icahn files proposal to put $150B Apple stock buyback program up for vote

Carl Icahn knows what he wants, and he usually gets it. These days, what Carl Icahn wants is Apple to initiate a $150 billion buyback program of its stock. Although Tim Cook hasn't clearly expressed it, he's been reluctant to follow Icahn's request, which led him to file a precatory proposal.

A precatory proposal is a fancy term which, in clear English means a shareholder proposal for a stock buyback program to be voted on at Apple's next annual shareholder meeting...

Plex app updated with new look for iOS 7

Plex for iOS has been updated with an all new design taking cues from iOS 7. As expected, translucency, new buttons and icons are at the heart of this update, which doesn't really bring anything new in terms of features, besides a new player for music and videos and the ability to detect URLs on the clipboard for quick queuing to myPlex.

This update also brings the usual performance and stability improvements that are to be expected.

The app is a free upgrade for existing users. For everybody else, it is available in the App Store for $4.99.

Get a $100 iTunes gift card for only $85

Best Buy is having a pretty good deal on App Store and iTunes gift cards at the moment. They're offering a $100 gift card for only $85, essentially giving you 15% off your iTunes purchases.

As far as discounts on apps, music, movies and books from iTunes go, this is pretty much as good as it gets. iTunes gift cards can be used to purchase anything from iTunes, including books, songs, apps, etc... In short, an iTunes gift card isn't limited to music but let's you purchase anything from iTunes, the App Store, and the Mac App Store...

Who are iPhone 5c buyers?

Industry analyst Dominic Sunnebo explains some of the latest smartphone sales data collected by his firm, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. According to him, the typical iPhone 5c buyer is older and not as wealthy as the average iPhone 5s buyer:

The cheaper 5C appeals to a broader audience than Apple usually attracts. In the US, the biggest demand for these mid-end models is coming from lower income households. Some 42% of iPhone 5C owners earn less than $49,000 compared with just 21% for iPhone 5S. iPhone 5C customers also tend to be slightly older at an average of 38 years compared to 34 years for the 5S. The good news for Apple is that this wider appeal is attracting significant switching from competitors. Almost half of iPhone 5C owners switched from competitor brands, particularly Samsung and LG, compared with 80% of 5S owners who upgraded from a previous iPhone model.

It might be misunderstood, but the iPhone 5c sure is bringing new customers in.

Get 35% off and free shipping on your iCarbons skins

If you've read iDownloadBlog for a while, then you probably already know how much I love iCarbons. After meeting with them in person at JailbreakCon last year, I realized these were just good people with great quality products and a great sense of customer satisfaction.

Never before meeting them and seeing their skins did I ever think about putting a vinyl sticker on top of my devices. The idea was quite repulsive to me, to be honest, but I quickly changed my mind, and to date, I believe that no less than 6 of my devices have been graced by their skins.

All this to say that the folks at iCarbons are having a Cyber Monday where everything is 35% off...

BodyGuardz offers 50% off everything sitewide today only

ZAGG isn't the only one offering 50% discounts on this Cyber Monday. BodyGuardz, known for its screen protectors as well as its skins for various electronic devices, is also offering 50% off its entire site, and the sale is available today only.

No coupon code is needed for this special offer. Just click this link and get 50% of everything, including the ScreenGuardz Pure tempered glass protector.
