Wallpapers of the week: warmth in the cold

As we enter the new year, we are celebrating with more wallpapers. This is the beginning of a seven month climb into the Wallpaper of the Week section. If you are keeping close tabs on the installments, we are trying a new platform. Now, readers are encouraged to send in their excellent wallpapers for consideration in the post. We feel like this will further engage our readership and help everyone feel more connected to the site.

With the new format in mind, there are potentially hundreds of submissions that may come any given week. I make it a point to look through the images, but sometimes it is less timely than others. I appreciate everyones' interest in the section and hope you look forward to it each week...

Gearing up for CES 2014: an insider’s outlook

The changing of the calendar year marks the beginning of new technologies. Like the rising and falling sun, CES steadfastly holds the first full week in January for announcements and debuts of tech gear, gadgets, and controlled chaos. In a flurry of excitement, tech leaders from around the globe are descending on Las Vegas, which plays host to the giant 150,000+ attendees exhibition.

Leading to the large turn out, 3,200+ exhibitors crowd every single square inch of the Las Vegas Convention center, where I will survive the next week in a tech related stupor. The convention is a pilgrimage, the life long requirement of anyone who considers themselves versed in the tech world. As a second-year attendee, I have a better understanding of the week's events and hope to gather new insight for the upcoming year...

Wallpapers of the week: new year time

If you missed the announcement last week, the Wallpapers of the Week format is changed. In a new effort to continuously provide top quality wallpaper images, readers are encouraged to submit any attractive wallpapers instead of simply ones created by an artist only. This switch also allows the images to be seasonally appropriate.

In a seasonally appropriate mindset, with Christmas behind us, the next holiday is celebrating 2014. Each year, a limited amount of new year options are created, primarily due to their short shelf life on users' devices. However, several choices were rounded up and offered herein...

Wallpapers of the week: Christmas pack

We are celebrating as we quickly approach Christmas, for those who observe the holiday. Additionally, today marks the 26th installment of Wallpapers of the Week, which means we hosted the section for exactly one half year. I enjoyed seeing the wallpapers from different artists each week and choosing which ones to post.

However, this week will mark a change in the wallpaper posts. Over the past six months, wallpaper submissions from readers dwindled. Although the post is frequently a highly trafficked article, readers slowly stopped sending in their work. Currently, I only receive three to four submissions each week. While I frequently reconsidered past wallpapers, the well is drying up. Posting quality images each week is becoming a challenge; therefore, the format must change to remain relevant...

A quick look at Sensu Solo, the true brush head stylus

Styli are not the coolest pieces of hardware on the market. In fact, when I think  "stylus," nothing cool comes to mind. I never wanted a stylus for my iOS devices, but I used one in the past, circa 2004 on a Windows based device. Those were clearly the bad days of my gadget obsession.

Arguably making things much cooler and more useful, Sensu developed a brush-type stylus for artists and amateurs alike. Popularly known for brush head styli, the company attempts to deliver an authentic experience to the digital marketplace. The goal of their endeavor is to create a "spring and restiveness that feels like real painting" and I would argue, there is certain success with this product...

iDB holiday gift guide 2013: Jim’s picks

The second annual holiday gift guide is taking submissions from the iDB editing team. Looking back, there are quite a few items that made my list this year, most of which were released in 2013. Also, as the hardware review editor, many of the items were reviewed on the site.

Last year I took a look at bargain priced items, but I threw pricing to the side this year. Why limit the excitement to items under $30? Take a look below for my suggested gifts for the gear head in your life. In no particular order, genre or category, let's dive in...

Gist intelligently summarizes your news articles

Many people turn to their iOS devices as a way to catch up on news and consume reading materials, keeping updated with daily happenings. Other than Twitter, there are few options to instantly give a short synopsis of a story or news blurb.

Personally, I use Flipboard, but even it utilizes the entire article. If you are pressed for time or only want the key points of an otherwise much larger article, a new app called Gist is aiming to provide only the quick details of news articles...

Wallpapers of the week: candy canes and gingerbread men

'Tis the season to be merry! Getting back on track with seasonally appropriate images for the Wallpapers of the Week section, today the walls are festively natured. Considering the new iOS 7 layered interface allows translucent viewing through the operating system, changing your wallpaper affects many places throughout iPhone.

From the passcode screen and dialer buttons, to Notification Center and sub-menu screens, the wallpapers shine through. If you are looking to make sure your whole iPhone is candy cane red, we have the perfect wallpaper for your holiday season...

Remotely control your computer from your iOS device with Screens 3.0

Ever away from your desk, but need to access something on your desktop? What about copying something on your Mac and pasting it to your iPad? Thanks to a new updated version of Screens, Edovia dev team is making remote view a simple and easy task for any user.

Previously, remote viewing was a complicated task reserved for the super nerds and IT geeks. However, with the spawn of tablets, the common man is now capable of logging into remote desktop through simplified app clients. As I am frequently away from my desk traveling, I decided to take a closer look at Screens...

Review: Armorz tempered glass skin for iPhone

Screen protectors are either hit or miss. As a naked iPhone user, I use neither a case, nor a skin. There is too much room for disappointment with many iOS device skins. Consequently, I am a true iPhone nudist. I am however not opposed to giving screen protections a try for review.

Inside, I take a quick look at the Armorz Stealth Extreme Lite Tempered Glass for iPhone 5/c/s. After receiving one from Armorz, I installed it on my wife's 5c and was more impressed than originally anticipated. My wife is still currently enjoying it, even though she prefers a nude iPhone as well. There are all types of screen protection on the market, but the Armorz is my first experience with a tempered glass variety...

Keep accessories handy with the Tangle case

On a regular basis, I am always carrying around any number of little doodads, accessories, and other miscellany. Where should I stuff all of my small pieces of important fanfare? Usually, I will load my pockets down with all that I might need. If there is more, I carry a backpack with lots of pockets and spaces.

Granted, iLuv's new addition, Tangle, will not replace a backpack or your favorite pair of cargo shorts, but it could easily come in handy. Popularly known for all sorts of creative iOS device solutions, iLuv even has a contract to produce Peanut cartoon accessories. Inside, I take a look at the Tangle and its accessory carrying options...
